The first of four Chicago suspects accused of beating and torturing a disabled teenager and broadcasting the attack on Facebook has pleaded guilty, but a judge let her off without prison time, a report says. Brittany Covington, 19, pleaded guilty to a hate crime in court on Friday, according to the Chicago Tribune. The suspect also “pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and intimidation charges. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped additional charges, including kidnapping,” the Tribune said. Despite the guilty plea, Cook County Circuit Judge William Hooks released Covington without jail time. Telling Covington, “Do not mess this

Comments:
That is totally outrageous and disgusting!! What they did to that poor young man was vile and barbaric. I remember that horrific crime. The link below states "With Hooks´ advocate role on a hanger and with his black judicial robe fully activated, he remains a friend of social justice and equal protection under the law. He also remains an enemy of injustice, bias and prejudice in our civil and criminal justice systems." Judge Hooks was not an enemy of injustice for this unfortunate victim. Be very afraid when the Muslim Bar Assn. praises him.

While this young woman deserved a far harsher punishment than she received, I agree with Hooks when he explained he didn´t send her to prison because, “I’m not sure if I did that you’d be coming out any better.” In fact, she´d probably become a more violent, more hardened, criminal. On the other hand, this slap on the wrist sentence provides no deterrence for would be criminals. Or for Covington herself.

When judges do this, they should have to be responsible for this. For instance, the next time this person goes to prison, this judge should have to go too for the same amount of time. He would be much more careful about letting criminals go, if he was tied to their future behavior.

In December, the publisher announced its decision to cancel many of its comics, citing poor sales. LGBTQ, feminist, and social justice-themed comics involving stories that revolved around Black Lives Matter, illegal immigration, and LGBTQ issues were among those to end up on the chopping block.
