Conyers´ House seat to remain

DETROIT – Michigan´s Republican governor announced Friday that Democrat John Conyers´ congressional seat will not be filled until the regularly scheduled November election, leaving it vacant for nearly a year. Gov. Rick Snyder decided the post will be listed twice on the August primary and November general election ballots. While unlikely, it is possible voters could choose one candidate to fill the vacancy until January 2019 and elect another to a full two-year term after that. It is unusual for a congressional district to stay vacant for so long, according to a review of roughly 100 vacancies and successors listed on

It already was vacant while that senile, lecherous, corrupt creature Conyers was soiling it.

This congressional seat needs time to air out to remove the Conyers stench.

Unfortunately the brain dead voters of this congressional district will just vote in a younger equally radical and corrupt version of Conyers who will do absolutely nothing to make any positive changes to the ghetto rubble that is Detroit.

True, the seat has been vacant for years. This way the taxpayers will spend less money.

Our own local embarrassment Rahm Emanuel actually believed at one time that you could fill a House seat by appointment. Presumably someone showed him the Constitution, and that it mandates special elections for House vacancies.

Day One of a government shutdown, filled with increasingly angry finger pointing from both Democrats and Republicans, appeared to produce little Saturday in terms of a potential solution for the impasse on how to fund the government. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell insisted that a vote to break a Democratic filibuster on a short-term spending bill to reopen the government would happen by 1 a.m. Monday. "I asked for consent to move up a vote on this bipartisan solution and end this craziness. The Democrats objected," McConnell said late Saturday, Roll Call reported. "That won´t work forever. Senate Democrats have blocked a bill to keep the federal government running and fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program for the next six years. They have, that is, partially shut the government down. They have taken this step not because of any strong objection to provisions of the funding bill but because it omits a provision they want: an amnesty for illegal immigrants who came to our country as minors. Most Republicans, including President Trump, favor this amnesty as well, but the parties have been unable to agree on what other policies, such as restrictions on follow-on immigration from the

This may seem like an odd moment for saying so, but a year into the presidency of Donald Trump, I’m elated. Trump was not my first or even second choice for president, but a full two years ago I predicted he would win. I also predicted he’d be a progressive president, which explained why I was not among his supporters and why I am so pleased now. Expecting Progressive Trump was a reasonable assumption. Trump supported the 2009 stimulus, the auto bailouts and the bank bailouts. He’d recently left the Democratic Party and had raised a ton of money for the

With the countdown clock ticking, a divided Congress is racing to reach a compromise in order to prevent a government shutdown by midnight Friday. Republicans control the Senate but they still need 60 votes in order to break a filibuster. "When you only have 51 votes in the Senate, then you have to have Democrat support in order to keep the government — to fund the government," OMB Director Mick Mulvaney told reporters during a White House press briefing Friday. The White House is preparing for what some officials are dubbing a “Schumer shutdown," Mulvaney said. If that happens, it would be the first

President Trump reminded Republicans on Thursday how easily he could explode his party’s carefully crafted messaging strategy, signaling how difficult it will be to stay unified in the face of Democratic attacks in a challenging midterm election environment. The House ultimately approved a short-term spending package in an evening vote after Republicans fell in line. The legislation advanced to the Senate, where it faced an uncertain fate because of opposition from both parties; passage requires a supermajority of 60 votes and Democrats are vowing to filibuster.
