As a man noted for his simple tastes and who does not seem receptive to new and exotic foods, Donald Trump presents a challenge for banquet organisers where the US president is the guest of honour. (Snip) The dishes on the menu included coconut-flavoured chicken soup, seafood chowder, Kung Pao chicken, stewed beef steak in tomato sauce, braised vegetables in premium broth and grouper fillets in hot chilli oil. Local delicacies that disturb Western culinary sensibilities, such as thousand-year-old eggs and bird’s nests, or like shark’s fin soup raise ethical concerns, were definitely off the menu. Comments: Some of the Chinese were amazed that the President was served meals that they could cook themselves at home, rather than something exotic. He ate what I would eat....and I certainly would not eat 1000-year-old eggs!
This could have been written by one of the interns at Vanity Fair. Surely Ms. Huang knows that Peking Duck is not wildly exotic and it is quite delicious. Fairly simple delicious taste after a long multi-step cooking procedure. Roast duck.
The only thing that could have been really offputting would have been the presentation of a whole fish - head and all - and the offering to an honored guest of its eye. It was offered to me at a luxurious dinner in Hong Kong years ago, and I had to turn it down. Fortunately I was not a head of state.
Exactly, #1, and remember this President is comfortable and quite familiar with sophisticated Chinese cuisine. The media continues to present Trump as some inexperienced rube. It goes without saying that the Trump’s gracious Chinese hosts made every effort to make sure all was pleasing for his particular tastes.
Some very good restaurants in NYC´s china town district (possibly POTUS has a favorite) that serve non-Americanized fare, i.e., Peking Duck and Sharks fin soup among others. While a whole fish head to tail doesn´t bother me, thousand-year-old eggs aren´t something to serve the uninitiated. It was the former president who was part of the arugula crowd aka "I like bitter greens". Someone´s nose might be out of shape since DJT was served a 6 course meal vs. 4 for the former.
When we were stationed at an American embassy overseas our defense attaché was invited to a dinner by the Chinese ambassador where he was served dried jellyfish. Being a tough old school Army colonel, he ate it. I’m glad that our president didn’t have to deal with something like that.
My only other comment is - who would ruin lovely sweet grouper by dousing it in chili oil?
During the Christmas break last month we looked at the rather odd story of an air traveler who was bumped from her first class seat on a United Flight from Texas to Washington by Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. (Snip) After a non-apology from the airline and an offer of a voucher in exchange for her troubles, Simon was still not satisfied with the treatment she had received. And now, according to her Twitter feed, she’s asked the Congressional Ethics Committee to look into the matter.
It´s not the prices at a shoe shop in Ramallah that will keep tourists out — it´s the demand for an official apology before entering. A sign recently posted outside the shop, shared on Twitter by COGAT, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, said any British or American citizens who wish to enter must apologize first. "To all British and American citizens," the sign reads. "Before entering, you should offer your apologies and hold responsibility for the Balfour´s [sic] Declaration and Trump´s dirty decision which has caused all the pain and suffering for the Palestinians since its declaration till this
1. MOM ARRESTED FOR TRYING TO GET HER BABY OUT OF THE CAR An Omaha woman taking her niece out of an SUV when the wind blew the door shut and the car locked with her keys and the child inside. The mom, the aunt and two other relatives tried frantically to open the door using a hanger and screwdriver, and when they couldn´t, they called 911. The cops arrived, broke the window, and got the child out, safe and sound. Then ticketed mom on "suspicion of child abuse by neglect." 2. 2017 has been marked by an inability, mostly by CNN, to ignore President Trump when other things require urgent attention. That wasn´t a problem for Frank Giaccio. Frank had the courage to write a letter offering his lawn mowing services to President Donald Trump. "It would be my honor to mow the White House lawn some weekend for you," Frank wrote. "Even though I´m only ten, I would like to show the nation what young people like me are ready for." Frank got straight to the point and made clear he was coming prepared for anything. "Here´s a list of what I have and
President Donald Trump will be represented during the 2018 Chinese New Year as a giant dog statue that shares his recognizable hairdo with a stern expression and an index finger pointed toward the sky. The presidential canine signals the country´s celebration of "The Year of the Dog" that will begin on February 16, 2018. (Snip) This Chinese New Year could be particularly noteworthy for the commander-in-chief, who was born in the Year of the Dog. Trump was born in 1946, a year that some Chinese astrologists associate with being intelligent, hardworking and sincere. The celebration of one´s birth sign supposedly signals a
A passenger on a United Airlines flight from Houston to Washington, D.C., accused the airline of giving her first-class seat to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas. The congresswoman, in turn, said it appeared the passenger targeted her "because I was an African-American woman." Jean-Marie Simon, 63, said she purchased her flight for the last leg of her trip from Guatemala to Washington on Dec. 3 with 140,000 airline miles, the Houston Chronicle reported Saturday. When she attempted to board her flight on Dec. 18, she was informed her seat had been sold, and she was given a $500 voucher and re-seated in
To the royal household, it is known as the QXB – the Queen’s Christmas broadcast. To millions of people, it is still an essential feature of Christmas Day. To the Queen, her annual broadcast is the time when she speaks to the nation without the government scripting it. But in recent years, it has also become something else: a declaration of her Christian faith. As Britain has become more secular, the Queen’s messages have followed the opposite trajectory. (snip) But for the past 17 years, her messages have taken on a different tone, with the Queen explaining her own personal
"It’s A Wonderful Life" bombed at the box office before becoming a Christmas classic. Along the way, it also caught the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. (Snip) An unnamed FBI agent who watched the film as part of a larger FBI program aimed at detecting and neutralizing Commie influences in Hollywood (fathered by, yes, J. Edgar Hoover) said it was “very entertaining.” However, writes scholar John A. Noakes, the agent “also identified what they considered a malignant undercurrent in the film.” As a result of this report, the film underwent further industry probes that uncovered that “those responsible for
A member of the Chinese State Council estimated that at least 10,000 civilians were killed in the Tiananmen massacre of June 4, 1989, declassified files reveal. Alan Donald, Britain’s ambassador when the Chinese government sent tanks into Tiananmen square to quell the student-led protests, sent telegrams to the foreign office on June 5, a day after the massacre. He said a person – whose name was redacted from the document – passed along the information from an unnamed member of the State Council. (Snip)According to Donald’s source, the army that committed the “atrocities” – as described by Donald – was the
It is probably the most important date in United States history, but to most people Dec. 23 signifies only that there are two shopping days left until Christmas. On that date in 1783, however, a remarkable event occurred. After victoriously leading an army for more than eight years against the mightiest military force on the planet, Gen. George Washington walked before the Continental Congress and announced, “Having now finished the work assigned me, I retire from the great theater of action …” He had commanded an army clothed in rags, its soldiers so hungry they ate tree bark to fill
Is this the beginning of the end for Donald Trump? Everybody´s hoping so – especially the journalistic class. That´s why they´re so giddy over the defeat of Roy Moore, (Snip) I hate to be a party pooper. But I´m thinking not so fast. People have been predicting Mr. Trump´s demise since the day he moved into the White House. And he´s still here. Mr. Moore wasn´t just a flawed candidate. He was the worst candidate for senator in modern history – a knuckle-dragging troglodyte and a rogue judge who´d been kicked off the bench, twice. The Washington Post´s devastating exposé of his
A Canadian man says he’s broke after the United Parcel Service lost track of his inheritance. The intended $846,000 delivery was a bank draft from TD Canada Trust, which still hasn’t refunded the lost fortune 10 months later. Instead, UPS offered an apology and $32 to pay for the mailing costs, according to a CBC News report. (Snip) The postal service refunded Taylor the $32 it cost her to mail the lost parcel and sent an apology letter, but she says that doesn’t really solve her problem. The bank is refusing to refund the money unless Taylor signed an agreement to pay
A review of a classified document outlining what is described as extensive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act abuse was made available to all House members Thursday and the revelations could lead to the removal of senior officials in the FBI and Department of Justice, several sources with knowledge of the document stated. These sources say the report is “explosive,” stating they would not be surprised if it leads to the end of Robert Mueller’s Special Counsel investigation into President Trump and his associates. The House Intelligence Committee passed the motion along party lines Thursday to make the classified report alleging extensive
The White House says it will not negotiate with the Democrats on immigration until the end of the federal government shutdown. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says in a statement that, “We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands.” She adds, “When Democrats start paying our armed forces and first responders we will reopen negotiations on immigration reform.” The government shut down at midnight after Congress failed to pass a spending deal. Sanders says, “Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown,” adding,
After leaving office, President Ronald Reagan created the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award to recognize individuals who have fought to spread liberty worldwide. Nancy Reagan continued the tradition after her husband’s death, and in 2008 she bestowed the honor on human rights icon Natan Sharansky, who credited Reagan’s strong defense of freedom for his own survival in Soviet gulags. Reagan recognized that as leader of the free world, his words carried enormous weight, and he used it to inspire the unprecedented spread of democracy around the world. President Donald Trump does not seem to understand that his rhetoric and actions reverberate in
The House Intel panel’s passage of New York Republican Rep. Peter King’s motion to release the FISA abuse memo to fellow House members has rocked Washington, D.C. (Photo) Lawmakers from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) have called for the classified memo’s immediate release. According to Fox News contributor Sara Carter, the contents of the memo are so “explosive,” that it could end special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe once and for all.Former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino warned the release of the FISA report will destroy the image of his former boss Barack Obama.“Take it to
California lawmakers are targeting the expected windfall companies in the state would see under the federal tax overhaul with a bill that would require businesses to turn over half to the state. A proposed Assembly Constitutional Amendment by Assemblymen Kevin McCarty, D -Sacramento and Phil Ting, D-San Francisco, would create a tax surcharge on California companies making more than $1 million so that half of their federal tax cut would instead go to programs that benefit low-income and middle class families.
Former FBI director James B. Comey is joining the faculty of his alma mater, the College of William & Mary, and plans to teach a course on ethical leadership at the school’s Washington center starting in the fall. Comey, whom President Trump fired last year, will have a nontenured position as an executive professor in education, the school announced Friday. His course will be offered through the W&M Washington Center to students of the public college based in Williamsburg, Va. Comey will teach the course in fall 2018, spring 2019 and summer 2019 with executive assistant professor Drew Stelljes.
During his town hall tour across Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has given explicit notice to pro-life Canadians that their beliefs on abortion make them second-class citizens. (Snip) According to the article, Trudeau warned that "an organization that has the explicit purpose of restricting women´s rights by removing rights to abortion, the right for women to control their own bodies, is not in line with where we are as a government and quite frankly where we are as a society." According to Trudeau, his tongue-lashing of pro-life groups was prompted by responses to a change to who can receive grants as
Far from content living his golden years on the $400,000 speech and lecture circuit of other former presidents, President Obama has been busy with clawing back for his old power. He´s actually covertly plotting to oust his democratically elected successor, President Trump, vowing to his associates to "rip him a new one," in the 2018 midterm elections. Seems he´s not all that interested in watching his youngest daughter grow up. That´s the word from DCWhispers, which reports that Obama´s Kalorama mansion, in the heart of the capital´s most tony district, is the center of significant comings and goings among the Obamatons,
Sara Carter reports on a classified document that was released to all members of the House today. The document seems to be a compilation of information, prepared by House intelligence committee staff, relating to the anti-Trump dossier, the FBI, the warrant to conduct surveillance on members of the Trump campaign, and the use of that warrant. Carter calls the document a bombshell. Her sources say its revelations might lead to the removal of senior officials in the FBI and Department of Justice, and perhaps even the criminal prosecution of some. They also say, less plausibly, that the revelations could lead to
For the second time in less than a year, New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson was arrested in Florida, and this time, cops say, he threatened to sexually assault the arresting officer´s wife. Anderson, 24, who was arrested at around 2:15am for going 105 miles-per-hour in a 45 zone, was placed in the back of the police vehicle and ´stated that when he got out he was going to find (the officer´s) wife, f--k her and n-t in her eye,´ according to the the police report with the Broward County Sheriff´s Office. According to the Daily News, the police
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Friday that Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has become "sort of the Steve King of the Senate," a reference to one of the House´s most ardent immigration hardliners. In an interview with MSNBC, Graham, who has advocated for legislative protections for young, undocumented immigrants, rejected the notion of ending family-based immigration in exchange for enshrining the protections of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program into law. A proposal by Cotton and Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) seeks to end so-called chain migration, which allows U.S. citizens and permanent residents to sponsor family members abroad to
More than 130 congressional members have viewed the classified four-page memo detailing what senior government officials describe as “disturbing and explosive” surveillance abuse by employees of the FBI and Department of Justice under the Obama administration against President Trump and members of his campaign. But almost all of them were Republicans. Since the document was released Thursday to House members “only Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee have seen it,” a congressional source with knowledge of the memo said. (Snip) Congressional officials expect the classified memo to be made available to the public before the end of the month. In order to
