California has not paid any of the $1.2 billion claims stemming from the Oroville Dam crisis, it has emerged. The main spillway of the nation´s tallest dam was heavily damaged in February, after heavy rains forced the dam operators to continue using it The flows exacerbated damage to the structure, eventually carving a massive gash through the concrete spillway. Chunks of concrete flew off the nearly mile-long spillway, which had not been used since the dam opened in 1968, creating a 200-foot-long, 30-foot-deep hole. Nearly 200,000 were ordered to evacuate as the emergency spillway threatened to collapse, but disaster was averted.
First, as the week began, came news of an attempted Islamic terrorist attack at New York’s Port Authority Bus Terminal…and next came everything we needed to know about the Mainstream News Media, which has once again, or finally become a punch line and a laughingstock. We need to exclude Fox News from that leftist cabal. Only Fox News still gives it mostly straight up, mostly fair and balanced. That same evening, visiting family when the Network News just came on, my son said, “Dad, which do you want first, the anti-cop story, the anti-Israel story, or the anti-Trump story?” That was ABC,
WASHINGTON - Congressional Republicans reached a deal on final tax legislation on Wednesday, clearing the way for final votes next week on a package that would slash the U.S. corporate tax rate to 21 percent and cut taxes for wealthy Americans. Under an agreement between the House of Representatives and the Senate, the corporate tax would be 1 percentage point higher than the 20 percent rate earlier proposed, but still far below the current headline rate of 35 percent, a deep tax reduction that corporations have sought for years. As they finalized the biggest tax overhaul in 30 years, Republicans wavered
Warnings of extreme fire danger have been extended to much of southern California and Yosemite National Park as winds pick up in the dry conditions. Firefighters made some progress on in corralling the so-called Thomas Fire, which has spread into national forest land north west of Los Angeles But Cal Fire has now issued a red flag warning that the fire would continue to spread west as it eats up parched brush. The warning area encompasses a wide stretch from Long Beach to Santa Barbara and then heads north toward Bakersfield and into the Sierra range to Yosemite. Cal Fire spokesperson Jordan Motta
Four Iraqi citizens have won High Court damages against the Ministry of Defence arising out of their ill-treatment and unlawful detention during the Iraq War. Damages were awarded to each of them today by a judge in London. Mr Justice Leggatt ruled that they were entitled to compensation under the Human Rights Act, with one of the men being awarded more than £30,000. Lawyers said after the ruling that the result of the four test cases could form the basis of settlement of more than 600 unresolved claims in what is known as the Iraqi Civilian Litigation. Claims were brought by Iraqi civilians alleging
ENERGY prices across Europe have soared after an explosion ripped through one of the continent’s biggest supply hubs. Pipeline deliveries across large parts of the continent have been thrown into chaos as a result of the deadly blast at the Baumgaerten site in eastern Austria. In Britain, Europe´s biggest gas market, the price of gas for immediate delivery soared by 35 per cent to 92p per therm, its highest level since 2013. The Italian wholesale day-ahead price surged nearly doubled to £41.44 per megawatt-hour, its highest ever recorded level. And Italy has declared a state of emergency as a result of the fuel
President Donald Trump said Monday a bomb blast in Manhattan highlights the need for an immigration overhaul - as the man arrested was revealed to be part of a large Bangladeshi family sponsored by his aunt or uncle. Trump said that the U.S. ´must fix its lax immigration system, which allows far too many dangerous, inadequately vetted people´ into the country. The Republican president pointed to his controversial travel ban as an example of the kind of policy that needs to be put in place. And he called on Congress to end ´chain migration,´ in which family members are permitted to join relatives
Conventional wisdom is that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is asleep at the wheel – from recusing himself unnecessarily from the Trump-Russia collusion investigation to doing nothing about the politicization and weaponization of the Department of Justice. He also gave free rein to his deputy A.G., Rod Rosenstein, who is in turn allowing Special Counsel Robert Mueller unlimited time, money, and jurisdiction to investigate President Trump´s entire life. Last summer, Trump expressed disappointment in Sessions, calling him "beleaguered," wondering why Sessions wasn´t looking into Hillary Clinton´s emails and true election chicanery. Rudy Giuliani was floated as a possible replacement. Was Trump truly
There is strong circumstantial evidence that an insidious plot unprecedented in American history was hatched within the FBI and the Obama Justice Department to help elect Hillary Clinton and defeat Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. (Snip) Such a plot would show that partisans within the FBI and the Justice Department, driven by personal animus and a sense of political righteousness, surreptitiously conspired to subvert electoral democracy itself in our country. As of now, we have no proof beyond a reasonable doubt of such a plot. But we have very strong circumstantial evidence.
There’s bad news and there’s worse news for President Donald Trump in new polls released this week. First comes the latest round of polling showing that Trump is the most unpopular president on record. Just 32% of respondents to a new Associated Press-NORC poll said they approved of the job Trump is doing as president, while an overwhelming 67% they disapproved. Among those who don’t think the president is doing a good job, more than half say they “strongly disapprove” of his work. The poll — conducted earlier this month — also suggests that nearly 70% of Americans believe the United States is “heading
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) suggested Thursday that Americans need to have more babies or risk a collapse of popular entitlements like Medicare and Social Security. “This is going to be the new economic challenge for America: people. Baby boomers are retiring — I did my part, but we need to have higher birth rates in this country,” Ryan, a father of three, told reporters as he riffed on how Republicans will tackle entitlement and welfare reform in 2018. “Baby boomers are retiring and we have fewer people following them in the workforce.
Female actresses attending this year’s Golden Globes ceremony are reportedly planning to wear only black in protest of the widening sexual abuse scandal that has engulfed Hollywood this year.According to E! News, the plan originally started with just a small group of women but gradually grew as other women wished to express solidarity. “So all of the female actresses and attendees, or most of them at least, are standing in solidarity together in a form of protest,” said ceremony host Jackie Oshry on The Morning Breath radio show. “They’re all going to be wearing black, obviously to protest the injustices
Santa Claus, Christmas trees and the colors red and green are examples of inappropriate “religious iconography” during the holiday season, according to a paper distributed during a “Respecting Religious Diversity” event at the University of Minnesota."Jewish Hanukkah" is targeted, too, with menorahs and the colors blue and white also described as being "not appropriate." “Consider neutral-themed parties such as a ‘winter celebration,’” the handout read. “Decorations, music, and food should be general and not specific to any one religion.” It was part of a Dean’s Dialogues “Religious Diversity and Holidays” event within the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource
CNN anchors Anderson Cooper and Christian Amanpour discuss reports that leaders of Syria, Myanmar Russia, and other authoritarian states have all used the term "fake news" to dismiss credible reports they disagree with. Ryan Crocker, who has served as ambassador to several middle eastern countries joins the conversation. Amanpour said that Trump´s use of the term has given dictators around the world license to paralyze the press and if it goes on, it will put democracy and the entire world order at risk. "This is really serious, and it just has to stop. Because it is undermining not just our safety, but
Democrats hate her (#Tolerance)... Feminists despise her (#GlassCeiling)... Progressives want her silenced (#Diversity)... And the liberal media dreads her. Who is she? She’s Sarah Huckabee Sanders. In case you’ve been hiding under a freshly broken shard of glass from one of the ceilings being broken all over Washington D.C. lately - keep reading, it gets better. She’s the 3rd female to ever hold the office of the White House Press Secretary. - Dee Dee Myers was the first under Clinton (1993-1994) - Dana Perino was the 2nd who served under Bush in 2007 And it’s no surprise that Trump put her there because she’s perfect for the job.
Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin has requested UN Peacekeeping Forces to the City of Chicago to cut down on violence in the Windy City. Boykin says peacekeeping forces are needed to fight the “quiet genocide” in the streets of Chicago. The joys of liberalism: 603 people have been shot and killed in Chicago so far this year. 3,454 people have been shot. There have been 652 homicides in Chicago so far this year. CBS Chicago reported: Some politicians in the past have recommended deploying the National Guard to help Chicago quell gun violence, but Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin went
For much of the year, Kirsten Gillibrand’s critics — sensing a presidential aspirant in their midst — had assumed that the New York senator could not hear enough about herself. For one day at least, it appeared she had. It had been about 10 hours since President Trump accused her of “begging” for campaign contributions that she “would do anything” to secure, and the Ms. Gillibrand, driving with her 14-year-old son on Tuesday evening, flipped on the radio looking for an update on the Senate race in Alabama. The top story, instead, was her. The radio went off again. What, exactly,
I don’t know whether this is comedy or a sign that in rural America, Democrats really don’t have anyone to run in statewide races. There were rumors that Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) could become the next director of the CIA, current CIA Director Mike Pompeo would become secretary of state, and current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would be asked to take a hike. Talk about some unwelcome Thanksgiving news if you’re Tillerson. The Trump White House has rejected the notion that this plan is in the works. Tillerson himself said he’s never considered leaving his current post.
Spurred by the multitude of sexual abuse scandals, top Hollywood executives have tapped Anita Hill to chair the newly formed Commission on Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace. The commission made the announcement Friday following a meeting convened by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Nike Foundation founder and co-chair Maria Eitel, Nina Shaw, and venture captialist Freada Kapor Klein. “The Commission will not seek just one solution, but a comprehensive strategy to address the complex and inter-related causes of the problems of parity and power,” said Kennedy.
