Macron the Meta?
Power Line, by Steven Hayward

Original Article

I’ve been highly suspicious of Emmanuel Macron, France’s youngish, posterboy president. First of all, he’s French. Second, his “beyondist” positioning between or above the existing French parties—rotten as they are—seems dubious. And while not abandoning these or other suspicions, his interview published today in the German magazine Der Spiegel makes for some very interesting reading. One comment in particular jumps out: I am a strong believer that modern political life must rediscover a sense for symbolism. We need to develop a kind of political heroism. I don’t mean that I want to play the hero. But we need to be amenable

Comments:
Well, now. We didn´t see that coming, did we? As someone commented after the article, "I can hardly believe what I am reading." I only hope that Macron´s walk will match his talk.

Thanks, OP. I´ve bookmarked the Spiegel interview for later reading. It seems like Macron might turn out to be the "Gallic intellectual´s Trump", sort of. I do kind of like the guy, based on his invitation to the Trumps to visit for Bastille Day, and the understated warmth and courtesy that he showed them. It´s always a pleasure to encounter someone out-of-type, that is, out of stereotype.

Saudi Arabia´s King Salman is reportedly set to announce he will step down as monarch and name his son as successor. If confirmed, it would cement the power of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 32, who has ordered the arrests of more than three dozen princes and ministers in a corruption crackdown. A source told the Daily Mail that King Salman would remain "custodian of the holy shrines" in Mecca and Medina and that the incoming ruler will focus on the kingdom´s policy towards Iran. The teenage son of an NFL player who was pulled from his dying mother´s womb after she was murdered by a hitman hired by his athlete father is celebrating his 18th birthday. Chancellor Lee Adams is the son of ex Carolina Panthers star Rae Carruth and Cherica Adams. He was born 10 weeks prematurely via an emergency C-section after his mother was gunned down in a drive-by shooting orchestrated by Carruth because he did not want to pay child support in November 1999. I am really sorry that John McCain suffers from a brain affliction, but he continues to play an active role in politics, and so I must call him out when he does something really outrageous. Yesterday, Sen. McCain called on Judge Roy Moore to "immediately step aside" after unproven allegations of sexual impropriety were published in a liberal newspaper. No waffling about "if true..." That is a standard Senator McCain did not apply to himself under similar circumstances. During his 2008 presidential bid, the New York Times published a story alleging sexual misconduct with a female lobbyist. McCain fought it.

One year after losing the presidential race, 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is still questioning the “legitimacy” of President Trump’s victory, accusing Republicans of voter suppression tactics in swing states and Russians of influencing votes through a “disinformation campaign.” “I think that there are lots of questions about its legitimacy,” Clinton said of the election during a video interview posted online Friday by the liberal Mother Jones website. Clinton lamented how “we don’t have a method for contesting” the election in the United States and called for an independent commission to “get to the bottom of what happened.” She suggested that she

She said so in a general election debate in order to attack Donald Trump -- who, at the time, was (recklessly) leaving the door open to challenge the outcome of an election most people expected him to lose. Chief among these people was Hillary Clinton. That´s why she excoriated his dodging and noncommittal answers on the question as dangerous to American democracy.
