GREEN BAY - Chants of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" reverberated around Lambeau Field on Thursday as the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears stood to observe the national anthem. Players and coaches from both teams locked arms on their respective sidelines. No one sat and no one kneeled. The decision by the Packers to lock arms was meant as a display of unity, a message made public through a statement crafted by the players earlier this week. They encouraged fans to do the same, and while the anthem proved to be uneventful, the majority of spectators did not link arms with their
Comments: This is what really happened. I caught the very end of the Anthem and then watched Rodgers hugging other teammates, but when he turned and walked away I saw him look down and shake his head in disappointment. Now I know why.
The proper physical stance to honor the National Anthem and the American Flag is to rise to your feet, face the American flag and to place your right hand over your heart.
Very simple easy to follow instructions. There is no kneeling and no locking of arms. To do anything other than the appropriate acknowledgment is to disrespect the tradition of honoring the flag and anthem.
You tried to pull a fast one last night and it did not pass the smell test with the American people. I watched just long enough to see how stupid they looked and then went to bed. Time to institute the rules of the NFL and start fining people for anything less than the accepted norm and start donating the fines to the Red Cross.
I used to care. It´s refreshing now. I´m still getting used to this.
I turned on the game a couple times, and I was strangely detached. Not even sad, just detached, and also refreshed.
It´s been a long time since I broke-up with anyone. I feel now, like I was in an abusive relationship that just ended. Sorry NFL, it´s not me, it´s you. USA over NFL any day. And, All Lives Matter over BLM too.
Trying to pull the audience in with their stupid arm locking which in no way is showing respect. Put your hand over your heart and stand tall and stop acting like stupid tools . The audience is not one with you guys, we know where your heart is.
This whole situation is designed to stir crap and trouble. There´s no win because no matter what anyone decides to do, someone is going to be ticked off.
I like the approach the players took. They tried to unify people toward something positive rather than negative. Rodgers was right...we get to choose whether we wanted to join them or not. I wouldn´t have but I´m not angry about it. I can disagree unemotionally and move on with the rest of my life.
There are many good, patriotic players and teams and management whom I won´t punish for the actions of a few idiots who surround them. I haven´t let the LGBTQ movement steal my love of the original Biblical meaning of rainbows and I don´t plan to let anyone steal my love of football. I will not give anyone that kind of power over my life.
Lock arms was meant as a display of unity. What unity. What are these idiots talking about. First it was police brutality, then it was social injustice now its a show of unity. Unity for what. Unity for players who are arrested every week for various crimes. Unity for players who have no respect for our country, out flag, our anthem or our military. They blew it, they know it and are now trying to change it. Screw´em all. Got it.
Nice try. Almost made it work. I saw a few that had arm locked but still close to over their heart. It was ... awkward to say the least.
I give this about another week of trying to be "unified" before this whole thing falls off the front pages so to speak. And players will be standing or not, but if not.. it´s only going to hurt them and prove who they are. They may go the way Kaepernick did. And I say, good riddance.
I don´t want to see political statements in my sports, my TV shows, or movies. Being patriotic is not being political.... unless you are a liberal weasel.
If these players are sincere, then let them become better role models for American youth, when the players are off the field. Players could live more admirable lives (an average of one NFL player a week is arrested for drugs or assault or drunkenness, etc.). NBA players could stop impregnating multiple women to whom they are not married. Players could end their endorsement of athletic shoes that are far beyond the means of so many young people (and cost a tiny fraction of their selling price to manufacture). If players are truly concerned about what are unarguably tragic conditions in America´s inner cities, all of the above would be a constructive beginning.
#11 I´m with you. Unity for what? FTA "The decision by the Packers to lock arms was meant as a display of unity, a message made public through a statement crafted by the players earlier this week." The article doesn´t say what they are all unified about. Do we have to guess? Well my guess is that they are all unified supporting Kaepernick.
I love the advice to "skip the game" from folks who have no dough on the line. If a working couple has $300 invested in a season ticket for a pair of middling seats (not to mention "seat licenses" and other fees), who´s going to cover the $2400 loss they´d take?
Establish a Fundme account for "refunds", and burn the tickets.
I could be wrong, but I have a feeling this whole business of what is being done during the anthem is about to blow over. Most seem to have had their say and want to move on. I´m still going to watch the games I´m interested in, and I´m really enjoying hearing Tony Romo calling the games. The stadium seemed full last night and the fans were enthusiastic. Maybe the kneelers can now do something constructive like solve the problem of black on black crime.
Some in here say they´re OK with Green Bay Kumbaya Arm Lock. Haaaah they´ve been indoctrinated! Compromising in policy, tradition, due process, circumventing rules, non-assimilation was the beginning of "down the slippery road", and these kinds of PC stuff is what got us into this social MESS!
They STILL refuse to place their hands on their hearts? ...Their ´message,´ continues to come through loud & clear. However, we got their message the first time and this communal display but accentuated it.
Perhaps we have to respect their honesty with regard to what they REALLY feel in their hearts about Old Glory and that for which it stands. ...Nah!!!!!!!!
All the little disappointed NFL fans are just "thrilled" that their favorite players are "standing" for the National Anthem... how sad, since men stand to pee. Standing just means you´re alive and well... placing one´s RIGHT HAND over one´s HEART is a pledge of loyalty to whatever it is you´re looking at. THAT is what´s important. Looking around, closing your eyes, talking, fidgeting, all that is WRONG!
Putzy-punks in this country need to learn Flag Etiquette basics.
"Unity" in this case means unity with the thugs, racists, hate-filled BLM and similar groups.
It´s unity with those hating our military and police.
The whole arm-locking unity garbage is even more offensive to me than the kneeling and sitting. At least you could tell who the bad guys were when they kneeled. But when they all join arms, that hides the most evil and takes them all down.
Not that I will ever see this, since I will NEVER watch another second of the NFL or NBA again in my life. I am done!!!
This is really, really simple. Stand straight and tall, face the flag, put your right hand over your heart.
Anything else is disrespectful.
As to "unity", what the hell is he talking about? Unity with the slugs who disrespected the anthem? Unity with the BLM racist haters? Get more specific than the BS "unity" and maybe we can have a discussion, even possibly agree.
But mealy mouthed, unspecified "unity" - is that unity with Louis Farrakhan or unity with the Founding Fathers? Not even close to the same thing.
Lock arms, what a silly, childish thing to ask of fans. #15 My way of thinking as well, do these players realize what they are teaching our American youth. (of course not, they don´t mind making more mind-numbed robot kids with the sex craved women they bed.)
The alleged Port Authority bomber spent an hour spilling his guts to investigators at Bellevue Hospital on Monday — saying he picked the specific hallway because of Christmas posters and that he was avenging violence against Muslims around the world, law enforcement sources said. Akayed Ullah mentioned President Trump and past administrations during the grilling, and said his anger was fueled by decades of anti-Muslim bloodshed in Gaza, Syria and Iraq. Ullah, a Bangladeshi immigrant, said the attack was specifically inspired by ISIS — “not Al-Qaeda” — and also mentioned seeing Christmas posters before detonating the device in the underground
A whistleblower claiming to have been privy to text messages exchanged between ACU Strategic Partners official, Alex Copson, and then-incoming National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, appears to have been lying. Flynn had reportedly told Copson that sanctions against Russia would be “ripped up,” in an effort to boost relations between Washington and Moscow. According to AT&T phone records, the conversation did not take place as the whistleblower claims. POLITICO reports: In an account provided to Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) in June — but made public only last week — the whistleblower said Alex Copson, a top official at ACU Strategic
On Monday, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour President Donald Trump should resign over the sexual misconduct allegations against him. Gillibrand said, “President Trump should resign. These allegations are credible, they are numerous. I’ve heard these women’s testimony, and many of them are heartbreaking. And President Trump should resign his position.” She added, “Whether he will ever hold himself accountable is something you really can’t hold your breath for. And so, Congress should have hearings. They should do their investigation. They should have appropriate investigations of his behavior and hold him accountable.”
Several women who have accused US President Donald Trump of sexual assault and harassment were expected Monday to call on Congress to open an investigation. A press conference by the women will be hosted by Brave New Films, a media company that recently produced a clip detailing sexual harassment or assault claims by 16 women against Trump. A press release from Brave New Films on Sunday said the women would relate their accounts of Trump’s alleged “groping, fondling, forcibly kissing, humiliating, and harassing women.” The White House has dismissed all of the accusations as lies. During Trump’s presidential campaign, more than
Vapid Hollywood dinosaur Chelsea Handler came under fire recently for calling White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders a ‘harlot’ and ‘trollop’ because of the make-up she wears during press briefings. James Woods moved in with the kill shot Saturday morning. Woods tweeted a video of Chelsea Handler being urinated on with a caption, “This person berates the character of @SarahHuckabee on a daily basis.”#ChelseaHandlerHumanUrinal That hashtag is amazing and that’s why we love James Woods! In case you missed it, here’s Handler calling a young Christian married mother of three children, WH Press Sec Sarah Sanders a ‘harlot’ and
"Partridge Family" star David Cassidy is suffering from multiple organ failure at a Florida hospital, his rep confirmed to several media outlets Saturday. Cassidy, 67, was admitted to the unidentified facility earlier this week. A spokesperson told the New York Post that Cassidy was "conscious" and "surrounded by family." His hospitalization was first reported by TMZ. The New York Daily News, citing Cassidy´s rep, reported that the singer´s liver and kidney were failing and he needed a transplant.
HOUSTON — Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien says he and general manager Rick Smith have discussed signing Colin Kaepernick in the wake of last week’s season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson. When asked about Kaepernick on Monday, a day after Tom Savage struggled in a loss to the Colts, O’Brien said: “We talk about the roster and what’s out there every day, Rick and I.” When pressed on whether they have specifically discussed adding Kaepernick, he said: “Oh yeah, everybody gets discussed.” Kaepernick, the former 49ers quarterback, began the national anthem protest movement by kneeling last season. He remains unsigned and
HOUSTON — The satisfaction the Houston Astros took in winning Game 3 of the World Series on Friday night had to compete with the fact that their first baseman, Yuli Gurriel, was caught on camera making a racist gesture in reference to Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, who is from Japan. Gurriel, who is from Cuba, had just homered off Darvish in the bottom of the second inning to give Houston a 1-0 lead over the Dodgers. As he sat in the dugout, he could be seen smiling and then raising his hands as if to stretch the side
Former President George H.W. Bush has apologized after actress Heather Lind accused him of sexually assaulting her during a screening of her AMC show. The alleged incident occurred four years ago, as Lind posed for a photo with Bush while promoting the AMC show “Turn: Washington´s Spies,” the Daily Mail reported. Lind wrote on Instagram Tuesday that Bush "sexually assaulted" her. She said he touched her “from behind from his wheelchair with his wife Barbara Bush by his side,” told her a “dirty joke,” and then touched her again. Lind claimed that Barbara Bush “rolled her eyes” at Bush, “as
The U.S. Army has stopped enlisting some immigrants who are legal permanent residents while mandating lengthy delays for others, part of a controversial effort across the military to tighten security in the ranks by subjecting foreign-born recruits to tougher background checks. Implemented late last week, the new policy halts indefinitely all enlistments involving green-card holders seeking to join the Army Reserve and National Guard, which is a part-time military service commitment. Green-card holders seeking to become full-time soldiers remain eligible to enlist in the active-duty Army, but they are no longer allowed to start basic training before their background checks
EDGEWOOD, Md. — A mass shooting in Harford County, Maryland has left three people dead and two people in critical condition Wednesday morning, according to authorities. Police say they got reports of shots fired at around 9:00 a.m. at Advanced Granite Solutions at 2111 Emmorton Park Road in Edgewood. The Harford County Sheriff´s Office says they have identified the suspect in the shooting as 37-year-old Radee Prince. Prince was an employee of Advanced Granite Solutions, according to the Associated Press. A witness to the shooting told ABC7´s Brad Bell that the suspect gathered coworkers for a "meeting" in the shop
The actress, who has emerged as a Hollywood voice in the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal, revealed that Twitter had locked her account on Wednesday night. Rose McGowan had a hold placed on her Twitter account Wednesday night, an act that quickly sparked outrage among the many users who have been following her posts ever since news first broke of the allegations against Harvey Weinstein. The actress, who has emerged as a Hollywood voice after finding herself thrust into the center of the developing story of sexual misconduct, harassment and assault allegations against the movie mogul, took to her Instagram
Over 700 employees at the Environmental Protection Agency have quit or taken early retirement during the Trump administration so far, bringing the agency close to employment levels not seen since Reagan. ThinkProgress, whose senior editor is scared of his plumber who he fears may have voted for Trump, is warning that the exodus will lead to "dirtier air" and "dirtier water." "Since Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt took over the top job at the agency in March, more than 700 employees have either retired, taken voluntary buyouts, or quit, signaling the second-highest exodus of employees from the agency in nearly a
An MSNBC spokesman confirmed Saturday the company made a separation-related payment to one of Chris Matthews employees after the woman complained about sexual harassment. Two sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Caller that Matthews paid $40,000 to settle with an assistant producer on his show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” in 1999 after she accused him of harassment. An MSNBC spokesperson contested that claim to the Caller, saying the company instead paid significantly less as part of a severance package. The woman complained to CNBC executives about Matthews making inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company
There’s bad news and there’s worse news for President Donald Trump in new polls released this week. First comes the latest round of polling showing that Trump is the most unpopular president on record. Just 32% of respondents to a new Associated Press-NORC poll said they approved of the job Trump is doing as president, while an overwhelming 67% they disapproved. Among those who don’t think the president is doing a good job, more than half say they “strongly disapprove” of his work. The poll — conducted earlier this month — also suggests that nearly 70% of Americans believe the United States is “heading
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is returning to Arizona and will miss the final vote on his party’s tax bill this week, CBS News reported Sunday. McCain, who has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Medical Center suffering from the side effects of his treatment for brain cancer, reportedly left Washington, D.C., on Sunday to return home for the holidays. This means he will not be in D.C. for the GOP tax bill vote, which is expected to take place early in the week. Republicans have won over two key votes for the measure, meaning they should still have the razor-thin majority needed to
I don’t know whether this is comedy or a sign that in rural America, Democrats really don’t have anyone to run in statewide races. There were rumors that Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) could become the next director of the CIA, current CIA Director Mike Pompeo would become secretary of state, and current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would be asked to take a hike. Talk about some unwelcome Thanksgiving news if you’re Tillerson. The Trump White House has rejected the notion that this plan is in the works. Tillerson himself said he’s never considered leaving his current post.
For much of the year, Kirsten Gillibrand’s critics — sensing a presidential aspirant in their midst — had assumed that the New York senator could not hear enough about herself. For one day at least, it appeared she had. It had been about 10 hours since President Trump accused her of “begging” for campaign contributions that she “would do anything” to secure, and the Ms. Gillibrand, driving with her 14-year-old son on Tuesday evening, flipped on the radio looking for an update on the Senate race in Alabama. The top story, instead, was her. The radio went off again. What, exactly,
Democrats, who have a monopoly of power in California politics, are proposing to spend $1 billion a year to provide health care to illegal immigrants living in the state. Medi-Cal, which is the state’s Medicaid program, would eliminate legal residency requirements. The proposal was offered as part of a $4.3 billion proposal from San Francisco Democrat Assemblyman Phil Ting, the head of the Assembly budget committee. According to NBC Bay Area, 7% of people residing in California lack health coverage, many of them illegal immigrants. California has already eliminated legal residency requirements for Medicaid coverage for
Hillary Clinton responded to a "Saturday Night Live" actor who showed off a new tattoo in the former Democratic presidential nominee´s likeness.Pete Davidson posted an image of his new Hillary ink on his Instagram page, saying it was a "gift" for the 2016 runner-up."Wanted to get @HillaryClinton a Christmas gift so I got a tattoo of my hero," Davidson, 24, wrote on Instagram. (Tweet) Clinton later commented on Davidson´s post, thanking him for his support."Thanks," the former first lady wrote. "This makes it
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is “worried” the House Intelligence Committee is about to pull the plug on the Russia investigation. In a Friday Tweetstorm, the Committee’s ranking Democrat fretted about the future of the probe — which Schiff believes is something of a sham. “Republicans have scheduled no witnesses after next Friday and none in 2017,” Schiff wrote. “We have dozens of outstanding witnesses on key aspects of our investigation that they refuse to contact and many document requests they continue to sit on.” The California Democrat added, “It appears Republicans want to conduct just enough interviews to give the
O.J. Simpson´s former lawyer and an investigator who worked on his case have revealed plans for a book they say will finally put to rest the public´s disbelief that he was acquitted of murder. F.Lee Bailey was one of several lawyers who worked on Simpson´s case in the 1990s. (Snip) Now 84, Bailey and Pat McKenna, the investigator who the defense hired, are shopping a book to publishers which they say will finally address what millions have been incredulous over for decades - how did OJ get off? ´We’re not writing this to make a fortune. ´We’re writing this to
The Democracy Dies in Darkness Café is located conveniently near the Capitol, the Hill and the FBI headquarters. It’s open all night and I stopped in for a late-night coffee with my friend, a fiction novelist who was depressed. “I spent a year writing about a coup attempt against an outsider who by strategic brilliance defeated the handpicked candidate of a cabal of establishment powerhouses. It involved the highest officials of the FBI and Department of Justice. They manipulated a FISA Court into letting them electronically surveil the candidate and all who worked with him, unmasked their names, leaked what
Jodie Foster reprised her Oscar-winning role as FBI agent Clarice Starling from the 1991 horror film The Silence of the Lambs for a skit on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Friday night, in which she attempts to get information on possible collusion between President Donald Trump and Russia from an imprisoned Hannibal Lecter, played by Colbert.“You’re one of [Robert] Mueller’s, aren’t you?” Colbert asks Foster, referring to the Special Counsel investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. “Still hunting President Trump?” “We were golfing buddies once,” Colbert-as-Lecter continues. “We ate our caddie, turned him into a taco
