As fast food employees across the U.S. continue to protest for higher wages, a California chain restaurant has decided to hire a new staff member that works for free. The competition for the company’s low-wage workers: a burger-flipping robot named “Flippy.” CaliBurger has announced they will be installing the high-tech replacement in 50 of their locations around the world. “Flippy,” the robotic kitchen assistant, was created by a California startup company called Miso Robotics and is expected to roll out in 2018.

This is what progressivism will get you. A place in the unemployment line, and less summer jobs for students. Well done California!

Beats bringing in more H-2B workers or hiring illegals.

If legal Americans are no-longer cost-effective, then we need to think seriously about apprenticeships and training young workers for jobs not suited to automation. Find a way to make good use of our legal youth and turning them into productive workers. Win, win.

$3,000,000/pop doesn´t exactly sound like "working for free".

Even replacing 3 $36,000/year employees, how long will it take to break even?

I can´t speak for other states, but in ND I have been able to renew vehicle registration online for several years. Takes only a couple of minutes and the new tags arrive in the mail a few days later. Now I understand that routine renewals of drivers licenses will mostly be done online. Have not stood in line at the DMV in several years.

Food preparation, at least for fast food, is an ideal candidate for robots. Think of pizza. Each ingredient precisely measured and placed with exact precision. And do risk of some nasty person spitting in your food. Staffing a fast food place could come down to technical managers to make sure the machines are running properly.

Hah hah! You jackasses keep wanting these ignorant, mastermind hacks in higher office
that are clueless to economics (see Shuma, Piggilossi, Fauxkahantas etc.) now this is the result....low paying jobs that usually was the gateway to bigger and better things...buh-bye!

Only recently has low cost robotics incorporating human like dexterity and visual recognition with AI been possible. Tens of millions of lower wage jobs are going to disappear faster than anyone realizes. It’s only a matter of time before a small business can order plug and play robotic workers in a box configurable to specific functions and industries. They are going to be expensive, but that $15/hr employee may be actually costing $30/hr after factoring in low productivity, turnover, worker disruption, tardiness, no shows, theft, law suits, holiday pay, work rules, social security and health insurance. If robotic automation takes the place of two workers on two shifts every day, that’s a $350,000/yr

Think about how many agricultural workers were displaced just by the first wave of automation with tractors and harvesters. This same sort of revolution is coming in the low wage labor intensive industries particularly fast food service, food processing plants and migrant farm work. The unskilled or semi-skilled illegal immigrant work force will be decimated.

An absolutely guaranteed result of the push for $15/hour minimum wage. Perfectly predictable and predicted by anyone with an actual grasp of basic economics. Of course, no leftist or most of the folks earning less than $15/hour who were pushing for this is bright enough to grasp it in advance.

Seems overly complex to this engineer. I could design a machine to do it, not nearly as complex and expensive as a robot. Super simple process, shouldn´t be hard to make a machine to do it automatically, not mimicking human motions, just doing what is needed.

If you had plans for the weekend, a Christian numerologist says you won’t get to them because the world is about to end. David Meade, a self-proclaimed “researcher,” is predicting that a series of apocalyptic events will begin on Sept. 23 and, “a major part of the world will not be the same.” According to Meade, the mysterious rogue planet Nibiru, also known as Planet X, is on a collision course with Earth, which will bring world-ending tsunamis and earthquakes. The numerologist claims the dates of recent events like the Great American Solar Eclipse and Hurricane Harvey’s flooding of Texas were all marked in the Bible.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller´s team is reaching back more than a decade in its investigation of Paul Manafort, a sign of the pressure Mueller is placing on President Donald Trump´s former campaign chairman. The FBI´s warrant for a July search of Manafort´s Alexandria, Virginia, home said the investigation centered on possible crimes committed as far back as January 2006, according to a source briefed on the investigation. The broad time frame is the latest indication that Mueller´s team is going well beyond Russian meddling during the campaign as part of its investigation of Trump campaign associates. Manafort,

Clinton´s book about her stunning loss in 2016 to Donald Trump sold more than 300,000 copies in the combined formats of hardcover, e-book and audio, Simon & Schuster told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The book´s hardcover sales of 168,000 was the highest opening for any nonfiction release in five years, according to NPD BookScan, which tracks around 85 percent of retail print sales. Mark Owen´s "No Easy Day," a 2012 memoir about the killing of Osama bin Laden, sold more than 250,000 copies in its first week. Sales for "What Happened"

In Federalist No. 68, his pseudonymous essay on “The Mode of Electing the President,” Alexander Hamilton wrote that the Electoral College could shield the United States “from the desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils.” (Snip) Hamilton and his colleagues never could have envisioned a year like 2016, when an enemy state—Russia—was able to manipulate America’s election process with stunning effectiveness. But it’s clear the national security rationale for the Electoral College is outdated and therefore it should be retired. Simply put, it enables foreign powers to more easily pierce the very shield Hamilton imagined

A new fifth grade teacher at Canopy Oaks Elementary is asking students to use gender-neutral pronouns in the classroom. Math and science teacher Chloe Bressack sent the request home in a letter to parents headlined "About Mx. Bressack." “... my pronouns are ´they, them, their´ instead of ´he, his, she, hers.´ I know it takes some practice for it to feel natural,” the letter reads, “but students catch on pretty quickly.” The letter also asks that students use “Mx.," (pronounced ´Mix´) when addressing the teacher rather than Mr. or Ms. The note alarmed some parents. Brown, an outspoken Trump critic, issued an usually harsh derision of Trump supporters after dismissing the president’s rhetoric on climate change science and U.S. policy toward North Korea as “stupid and dangerous and silly.” “They’re both kind of very similar,” Brown said. “You should check out the derivation of ‘Trump-ite’ and ‘troglodyte,’ because they both refer to people who dwell in deep, dark caves.” Brown attended the climate event, which coincided with the U.N. meeting in New York,
