Residents not thrilled about
mayor´s proposed property tax hike

KTRK-TV [Houston], by Jeff Ehling

HOUSTON, Texas -- Many Houston residents are still dealing with flood damaged homes and wondering how much it will cost them to get back to normal. On top of paying for repairs, the city of Houston may increase property taxes by nine percent. The key is if the city council agrees to this. We should know tomorrow if the proposal will go forward. Here´s a look at what the numbers mean for you. The current rate of 58.6 cents per $100 valuation would go up to 63.8 cents for 12 months.

Raising taxes is all too often the knee-jerk response of government, particularly leftist government. A nine percent increase in property taxes may not sound like much. But these folks have so many other expenses after Harvey. Here´s one more!

The mayor is a Democrat.

They raise taxes. It´s what they do.

I´d suggest not voting for Democrats (or RINOS).

Well, then, let your displeasure with your Democrap mayor be known. Protest! Scream, yell, form resistance groups, make safe rooms, hug puppies, build a teddy bear wall...what ever you stupid Democrat voters do to let your anger and craziness be known. Do it! The Mayor will quickly give in to your angst and everything will go back to normal- right? But, what ever you do, by all means, keep re-electing crazy tax-tax-tax Democrats! That´s a sure way to find a perfect life-

Lt. Gov. Patrick ran on reducing property taxes for the state of Texas!! Now? Crickets!!!

This is a state which lets freaking county raise property taxes up to 10% (which means 9.99% increase) every year!! Citizens of this great state are getting the short end of the stick and the senate lets the Democrats dictate during every legislative session

I don´t know about the city of Houston (which could do a sales tax increase rather than property tax increase) but here´s the problem for schools: For those districts that have had a large percentage of the residences and businesses in their taxing district destroyed, the taxable value of those properties will be, at most, 1/10th what they were before the storm. That means the school´s tax base has been drastically reduced. The major funding source for Texas schools is the individual school´s taxing district. What are those schools going to do when the tax base is cut in half? Yes, the district will be rebuilt, but how does that help next year´s funding? Taxable values are set as of October 1. I think the city of Houston was trying to get out in front of the schools. Schools don´t get sales tax money.

This idiot is not just tone deaf, he is so out of touch it´s simply astounding.

Imagine the idiocy of announcing higher taxes to people that were just run out of their homes by a Hurricane...and as a footnote, the FLOODING was not caused by the Hurricane per se, it was caused by an incompetent idiot running the City that they need to invest in Infrastructure and put in huge drainage tunnels with super pumps to push the water out of the neighborhoods to the ocean 80 feet below, NOT wait until it slowly drains via ´far too small´ streams and channels. Get a clue folks, Democraps don´t give a lick about citizens, they just want to steal your money to pay off their cronies...all of whom SHOULD be in PRISON!

The .638 is the Harris County Tax. There is school tax that matches the County Rate, or plain language, the actual property tax rate is double that, county and school taxes. The tax applies to business inventories. Businesses, challenged by online competition, have had to drop their inventories because they do not have the money to pay the tax. Other businesses, challenged by the downturn in oil prices are not buying equipment to avoid these taxes. This has caused property tax revenues to decline, so the authorities are increasing the rate. The government never decreases spending. Most of the government budget is bureaucrat salaries and pensions, which never go down.

How very convenient of them to vote on this when most of the residents are still in full-on survival mode!!!

Honey, stop trying to rescue the neighbor hanging from the rafters because his house is flooded! Quick! We need to rush down to city hall to make sure our voices are heard about this tax hike!

Who do you think funds "free" public education for the anchor babies and the "dreamers?" Who pays for the "free" healthcare they receive at county-run hospitals? Who pays for their translators, their jail time, etc? Why, anyone who owns property, that´s who. "It´s the illegals, stupid."

Never let a good crisis go to waste.

Regarding public school funding, Texas´ courts have spawned the "Robin Hood" funding equalization program whereby "richer" school districts are forced to subsidize "poorer" school districts. If the Houston districts that have had their tax base destroyed can get themselves declared "poor" they will get the cash from places like Midland, population about 110,000, which gets to kick in about 50 million bucks annually to the equalization kitty.

I would think the response to this would be that real estate holders, one and all, would petition to have their properties re-evaluated, to reflect current value. I don´t know TX law must there must be some mechanism to adjust property values current value. To not do so, would mean property values could never go down, which is madness. But, stranger things go on every day.

Don´t be fooled. There is no such thing as a temporary tax. Once any government, whether city, county, state, or federal temporarily tax the people, that tax will be forever. When it comes to taxes, there is nothing temporary.

Why is the onus always on property owners while those that use the most services rent? Why not add a tax on renters or increase sales tax?

New Castle police have confirmed a fire at the Clintons´ home in Chappaqua. Police declined to give further details on the fire at 15 Old House Lane where Bill and Hillary Clinton have lived for nearly 20 years after buying it for $1.7 million in 1999. But scanner reports said it was a bedroom fire and has been extinguished. The house, built in 1889, features five bedrooms over 5,232 square feet and a pool on its 1.1 acres. NBC plans to televise any players who refuse to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, but there may be nothing to show. It appears that NFL players are no longer taking a knee during the national anthem, namely because none of the teams with still-active protesters has qualified for the postseason. By the end of the regular season, only five teams featured at least one player regularly sitting or kneeling on the sidelines for the anthem: the Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers, the Miami Dolphins, the New York Giants and the Oakland Raiders. Ever since Donald Trump entered the political arena, his intelligence has been viciously attacked and his supporters have been labeled as moronic deplorables. In a recent Trump tweet, the president responded to the most recent attack by saying he is a stable genius. The mainstream media never bothered checking evidence of Obama´s intelligence before one historian declared him "the smartest man with the highest IQ ever to be elected to the presidency", even though his academic records were sealed. A crazed, bug-eyed Cory Booker, junior senator from New Jersey, blasted Department of Homeland Security secretary Kristjen Nielsen during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday on immigration. Booker became so unhinged in his staged outrage that he repeatedly threatened Nielsen, with clenched fists pointed in her direction. Equal to Booker´s overt violation of Nielsen´s right to be treated without hostility and intimidation was the deranged content of his tirade. Nielsen had stated earlier she did not hear the president say the "s-hole" word at last week´s White House meeting on DACA. Booker went ballistic and accused Nielsen of covering up

WASHINGTON- President Donald Trump relentlessly congratulates himself for the healthy state of the U.S. economy, with its steady growth, low unemployment, busier factories and confident consumers. But in the year since Trump´s inauguration, most analysts tend to agree on this: The economy remains essentially the same sturdy one he inherited from Barack Obama.Growth has picked up, but it´s not yet clear if it can sustain a faster expansion. Hiring and wage growth actually slowed slightly from Obama´s last year in office. Consumers and businesses are much more optimistic, but their spending has yet to move meaningfully higher. Three-quarters of the members of a federally chartered board advising the National Park Service abruptly quit Monday night out of frustration that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke had refused to meet with them or convene a single meeting last year. The resignation of nine out of 12 National Park System Advisory Board members leaves the federal government without a functioning body to designate national historic or natural landmarks.
