As readers of PJ Media´s daily feature, Hot Mic, are aware, I´m not a big fan of Amazon. In the guise of ease, efficiency and allegedly low prices, it´s crushing the life out of the retail section in the United States, demolishing bookstores, big-box stores, department stores, grocery stores, record stores, and even smaller retail outlets, putting small businessmen, struggling authors and garage bands out of business. In so doing, it´s also killing job prospects for entry-level workers who might actually not want to work at McDonald´s. In their place, it offers you Alexa, your very own electronic monitor and spy,
If you don´t like it, invent a better mouse trap. The ugly little truth here is that Amazon Prime works. Without leaving my chair I can find exactly what I´m looking for, buy it, and it will be here in a day or two. Saved a couple of gallons of gas in the process.
I think it was the United States Post Office that pushed me to AMAZON. When the postage was more than the Present I was sending to my Grandchild I turned to Amazon. The present cost less, I had way more to choose from and I didn´t pay ANY postage on the package! Amazon simply created a better way. Also, I bought Alexa for Hubby for his upcoming birthday. We will have fun with it, and no, it will not be on the Bedside Table.
I think Amazon´s might is being slightly overstated here. While it has ruled on-line sales, brick-and-mortar retailers, e.g. Wal-Mart, are offering it serious competition now such that Amazon is venturing into their territory with its own stores and buying Whole Foods. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. All in all I think that the consumer will be the winner regardless.
In 10 minutes I bought 10 -12volt, 5watt bookcase push-in bulbs for a 50 year old book case at our church - $10 and free delivery on Prime. Would not have driven all over Dallas looking for a lite bulb store that carried this odd item. I know Home Depot and Lowe´s, and their GE/Philips sponsored lite bulb sections do not carry this once in a generation item - the category killers of the 20th century.
Yesterday I made a purchase online. Because I have Prime I almost purchased it from Amazon. However, I looked elsewhere and gladly paid the shipping cost another company charged. It´s time to back off from the convenience of Amazon and help other retailers grow their businesses. It´s also time to tell Bezos to buzz off!
Amazon is building 2 warehouses in Houston and adding 5,000 full time jobs. The enemy of retailers is not Amazon, it the property tax collector, which makes the cost of carrying inventory prohibitive. That is why your retailer doesn´t have anything, but will order it.
I do buy from vendors posting on Amazon, but it´s extremely rare that I buy the product directly from Amazon. Yes, I know Amazon charges the vendors a fee. But I imagine Amazon would make more if I bought it directly from them. Bezos is a man I have no respect for.
I am certainly no fan of Bezos´ politics, but he is an entrepreneurial genius that capitalized on modern technology and delivery. The "brick and mortar" retail approach has involved too damn much overhead and too damn many middlemen for years, and Bezos pioneered in breaking this up. Give credit where it is due and separate out the politics.
Like or not retail dinosaurs: the future is here - adapt or become extinct. (And there is plenty of room to adjust their business model. Start with the catalog store template, and improve on it.)
As to WaPo: it has overstepped and has lost credibility. Like Obamacare, it is destroying itself. Just let it happen.
When the bookstore becomes a toy and tschotske store, and the department store bases its selection and advertisements on alternative life styles, then don´t be surprised when I shop elsewhere.
Example, yesterday I went to an office supply store to buy clean-edge two-sided business card blanks. I have bought this item at that store for years. But yesterday, the staff said they no longer stocked them.
Amazon Prime will be delivering them by this evening.
I have been an Amazon customer since 1998. Fully involved with prime, firestick, echo. Friday my wife said she needed a new hair dryer, checking Amazon we found 1 she ok´ed. They offered a reduced price with a "lightning" round. We took advantage. They confirmed the order but at their regular selling price. Now the aggravation started with phone calls. A Filipino who doesn´t understand English. Then at my insistence an American. Long story short I was told that to get the discount I had to purchase 2 items from the same manufacturer!! They couldn´t honor the discounted price. I check the web page, read it twice and no where does it state two items. Then I went to my 19 year Amazon record,I have spent just $200.00 shy of $50,000.00. I´m looking for another site to buy from and so should you.
It´s not often I disagree with Mr. Walsh, but I do here:
1) You don´t have to go into debt to purchase from Amazon...I use a debit card and it works great.
B) Nothing´s stopping somebody else from creating another Amazon to compete. I don´t like Bezos, but he had a vision and he toughed it out during the lean years. If somebody else (besides Jack Ma) wants to do the same, I´ll use them.
3) As a writer (as yet unpublished), I´m all for royalties, but I´m even more about free enterprise.
4) I often shop at Ace instead of Home Depot even though I love HD because of convenience and expertise. I wouldn´t hesitate to do the same online. Capitalism isn´t a zero sum game...everybody can win.
5) RE: Use of post office - Amazon is just making use of something that´s already there. And it ain´t like the PO doesn´t need the help.
6) The part that does give me pause is the WaPo purchase. But there again, other humongous companies own media (GE, et al).
"Russia, Russia, Russia" isn´t working and may actually turn against the Democrats. What is next in their playbook? The usual racism page, although this time, it is for all of the marbles. With nothing to run on besides "Trump is evil," and with the Awan scandal ahead, they have no choice. Twenty-eighteen will be a bloodbath for them in a regular election, so they have to suppress turnout, if not eliminate it. More and more, Charlottesville looks like a setup. Jason Kessler, who organized the "Unite the Right" event, seems to have a history with the left. Aside from his Occupy
The people who are tearing down statues of Confederates in the South are barbarians, not notably different from the Taliban fanatics who blow up Buddhas and other historical monuments. Many have noted that if the barbarians want to erase Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis today, it is only a matter of time before they come for George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. We can add Abraham Lincoln to that list. Last night, a bust of Lincoln in Chicago was vandalized, apparently as a political act: Abraham Lincoln has joined George Washington on the list of those targeted by Chicagoans in
In the days since violent clashes at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville culminated in a neo-Nazi sympathizer driving his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, journalists have mainstreamed the self-described “anti-fascists” (or “antifa”) at the rally — largely ignoring their involvement in the escalating political violence in this country. Many establishment political figures insisted the far-left actors were just like American soldiers on D-Day. But these “anti-fascists´” own statements show they’re nothing like American soldiers on D-Day. They aren’t interested in protecting America’s system of government, according to their own statements — they’re interested in destroying it. From the very start of
America beat the Nazis. Then America beat the Commies. Now some self-styled Nazis are fighting some self-styled Commies on American soil, and our veterans have been drafted without their knowledge or consent. The Greatest Generation are now Communists, whether they like it or not. Ladies and gentlemen: Our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters in the media will congratulate themselves now. It’s weird how all these guys had the same idea at the same time, huh? I think this pretty much confirms the existence of JournoList 2.0. My grandfather was a career Navy man. He stood up to the Nazis, and
Marty Baron lives in a $1.7 million condo in Logan Circle. It’s seven blocks away from the headquarters of the Washington Post. And a 12 minute drive away from the FBI’s J Edgar Hoover Building. Arrest him. His paper’s latest contribution to wrecking this country is an editorial titled "Charlottesville showed that liberalism can´t defeat white supremacy. Only direct action can." It concludes with, “Start throwing rocks." "Resistance, be it forceful or clandestine, threatened or explicit, stands as our ´rock.´ Rocks can look like armed self-defense or nonviolent direct-action campaigns," N.D. B. Connolly, a history professor at Johns Hopkins who
Hundreds of pro-Trump demonstrators and anti-Trump counter-protesters converged at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle on Sunday, resulting in several arrests and the confiscation of weapons. The rally, organized by the conservative group Patriot Prayer, came one day after violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left three people dead and dozens injured. Counter-protesters -- including antifa, Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), Veterans for Peace, Indivisible Seattle, Black Lives Matter, and the Freedom Socialist Party -- marched "in solidarity against hate," specifically against what they called “the bigotry, racism and violence" of the "far-right" organizers. Solidarity Against Hate counter-protesters waved communist flags,
President Trump is still facing a torrent of criticism for his responses to the Charlottesville violence. After calling out the hatred and violence from “many sides” on Saturday, Trump finally did what the media demanded and condemned white nationalists and other hate groups by name. Yet, that wasn’t good enough for the chattering class, and the new denunciation is not winning the president any goodwill. While it’s certainly true the president could have articulated a better message over the weekend, his administration is taking a very hard line on the Charlottesville violence. The Department of Justice is launching a civil
Don´t tell anybody, but I´m actually beginning to love Trump. Not physically, natch, but as our funniest and most truthful president since Calvin Coolidge. Normal Americans have watched our politics turn to mud for a quarter century, since Bill Clinton, the Arkansas corruptocrat. We´ve watched it and watched it while the media turned into a copycat Soviet propaganda ministry, and now, finally, somebody is acting like an adult and talking without having to explain every single word. We know the State Department has been Foggy Bottom for decades, a place where Harvard grads go to rusticate -- effectively, to die as real
In Dallas, a black nationalist activist shot and killed 5 police officers at a Black Lives Matter anti-police rally. Instead of condemning BLM, Barack Obama defended a racist hate group whose role model is Assata Shakur, a wanted black nationalist cop killer, at the funerals of the murdered officers. The left killed civil rights and replaced it with black nationalism. The racial supremacism of black nationalism that killed those officers is everywhere. Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ibram X. Kendi are lionized as brilliant thinkers instead of hateful racists, Amazon has ordered a black nationalist secessionist fantasy from Aaron McGruder and Showtime aired
Allum Bokhari: You are one of a number of current and former Google employees speaking out in the wake of the Viewpoint Diversity Memo. Is there anything particular that makes you support the principles in that document? Emmett: I’m happy you asked. I’m also happy you’re giving the document a more accurate name, as the mainstream media has almost universally been calling it the “Anti-Diversity Memo” which is both stupid and a lie. The fundamental starting point of the document is that there exist documented differences between men and women, which we see hash out in real life. That is
How many AT readers have found that they can no longer do a useful Google search on any news topic? The only hits that come up are liberal. Even the Wall Street Journal does not make it, although minor liberal papers like the Christian Science Monitor do. To find interesting commentary and reporting I trust, I have to go to my list of favorite websites and search on their pages. Following the firing this week of a valued employee for the thoughtcrime of questioning gender quotas, Breitbart is running a series called "Rebels of Google." Whistleblower employees are exposing the purposeful
One of the unspoken ´indications´ in the medical sense of the ever-metastasizing Trump Derangement Syndrome is that the sufferers have a deep conscious/unconscious fear that Trump is right. What if the man they have excoriated unremittingly as a barbarian-racist-xenophobe-homophobe -misogynist-nitwit turns out to have been on the correct side of a fair number of issues on which they have failed, sometimes miserably, for decades? Talk about personality disintegration — it would be hari-kari meets the Wicked Witch of the West. Well, emotionally anyway. The current North Korea crisis is a perfect case in point. Susan Rice — has this woman no
“There must always” be a flow low-skilled immigration to the United States, no matter its impact on American workers, according to Republican establishment figure Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ). Flake slammed the idea of potentially cutting legal immigration levels in half to raise the wages of American workers and end the current low-skilled oriented system to make only admit immigrants based on their skills and merit in a New York Times op-ed. Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and David Perdue (R-GA) introduced the specific plan, known as the “RAISE Act.” President Donald Trump endorsed the plan and said the legislation “will reduce poverty, increase
WASHINGTON – Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) said many federal employees are leaving the Environmental Protection Agency and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration over “fear” that the Trump administration is going to “suppress their viewpoints” or move them to irrelevant positions. Beyer, ranking member of the House Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Oversight, was asked if he would have full access to the “unfiltered” final version of the latest federal government report on climate change. The New York Times published a leaked draft of the report, which was submitted to the Trump administration for review. “The majority members of my committee may
Two members of the Kennedy family were arrested for disorderly conduct near the family’s famed compound on Cape Cod, according to police. Max Kennedy, the 52-year-old son of Robert F. Kennedy, was taken into custody for disorderly conduct and a noise violation around 1 a.m. Sunday morning after reports of loud partying, Barnstable Police told the Boston Herald. His daughter Caroline, a 22-year-old California resident, was also arrested at a home a short walk from the main Kennedy compound. (Snip) The arrests come after a brush with the law for another of RFK’s grandchildren, Conor Kennedy, who
Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal hoped for the assassination of President Trump in a Facebook comment on Thursday then deleted it in a panic. She even acknowledged she would get a visit from the Secret Service for her comment. (Photo) Maria Chappelle-Nadal’s Facebook comment was so egregious that even ABC News reported on the story. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports: Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, D-University City, posted a comment in a Facebook conversation Thursday morning saying she hoped President Donald Trump will be assassinated. The comment was removed but Chappelle-Nadal confirmed to the Post-Dispatch that she had written it in
The Rev. Jesse Jackson on Sunday gave a strong endorsement to the movement for removing monuments to leaders of the Confederacy and called for the electoral college to be abolished. Speaking at the Islamic Center of Southern California, Jackson blamed the electoral college system, giving disproportionate influence to less populated states, for the 2000 and 2016 loss of Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and Hillary Clinton despite their winning the popular vote. “Today we are looking at a structural problem,” Jackson said. “These monuments must go. Calling for the audience to repeat, he said, “Say the monuments and the flags
WASHINGTON — The Secret Service can no longer pay hundreds of agents it needs to carry out an expanded protective mission – in large part due to the sheer size of President Trump´s family and efforts necessary to secure their multiple residences up and down the East Coast. Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex´´ Alles, in an interview with USA TODAY, said more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the entire year. The agency has faced a crushing workload since the height of the contentious election season, and it
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) has revealed that during the 2016 presidential campaign, House Speaker Paul Ryan told him and his fellow Republicans to give up on Donald Trump´s campaign and just focus their energy on keeping "President Hillary Clinton accountable." According to Ryan, the Republicans had no chance at the White House, so at the very least they should try to retain their House majority. The directive came during a conference call, Gohmert told The Daily Caller in a video interview and then confirmed again during his appearance on "Fox & Friends" Sunday. The Texas Republican, as you can imagine, was not
Ten sailors are missing and five have been reported injured after the USS John S McCain was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel on Monday morning, the Navy has said. The collision between the US guided-missile destroyer and merchant vessel Alnic MC was reported at 5.24am local time. The John McCain was underway east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca, on its way to a routine port visit in Singapore. It is now sailing under its own power and heading to port, the Navy said. The crew is reportedly fighting flooding in two crew berthings and an area of the ship known as the 'shaft alley'.
A Texas college campus removed four statues of prominent Confederate figures in an overnight sweep, according to reports. The statues of Gen. Robert E. Lee, Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, Confederate Postmaster General John H. Reagan and former Texas Gov. James Stephen Hogg were each taken down from the campus’ Main Mall in an operation beginning just before midnight and continuing through the early morning, KSAT 12 reported. “Last week, the horrific displays of hatred at the University of Virginia and in Charlottesville shocked and saddened the nation,” University of Texas President Greg Fenves said in a statement. “These events make
The eclipse that occurred over Chicago led thousands to the beaches and streets, where they gasped and cried out as the sun partially disappeared. For WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling, it was an especially awe-inspiring event. The famed meteorologist hugged and high-fived people around him and wept as the eclipse occurred Monday afternoon. "Oh, my word," Skilling said. "Wow. This is amazing. What do you think of this, this?" At another point, he told viewers, "I´ll get my act together, guys." His voice cracking, Skilling apologized for his tears. Skilling´s heartfelt reaction earned him praise from fans:
Trust in the mass media is at an all-time low. Two-thirds of Americans believe the mainstream press publishes fake news. Yes, there’s still much good journalism to be found, if you know where to look. Yet, ask reporters who’ve been around a while, and many will tell you that a lot of good journalism is being left unpublished. Good journalists hate what’s happening to the news. We have only ourselves to blame. Firewalls that once strictly separated news from opinion have been replaced by hopelessly blurred lines. Once-forbidden practices such as editorializing within straight news reports, and the inclusion of opinions as if
Students at Howard University, a top-rated historically black college in Washington D.C., took to social media to express their anger over a group of white high school girls wearing pro-Trump clothing who visited the campus on Saturday. Some tweets referring to their visit also suggested the white high school girls should be beaten up. One of the high school guests, in a social media post of her own, said they were simply visiting the school’s cafeteria to get food as part of a larger tour of the nation’s capital, and faced a barrage of insults and aggressive acts, including having
