Subway looks to update stores with
ordering tablets, vegetable displays and a
brighter atmosphere as sales have fallen

Subway wants to freshen up the look of its stores as it tries to stem a sales decline. The sandwich chain says the redesign - which includes a brighter atmosphere, displays of vegetables behind the counter and ordering tablets - is the first major revamp since the early 2000s. The changes will take place as stores around the country are remodeled and new ones are built. The makeover comes as Subway´s sales have fallen for four straight years amid competition from places including Jimmy John´s and Firehouse Subs. Since 2012, Subway´s average annual sales per store are down 13 percent

In my humble opinion, Subway could only improve if their sandwiches were as good as most other places.
Best sandwiches here are made in Publix.

Have at me.

There´s only one place to get a true hoagie. The Hoagie Shop, Butler PA. All others are pale imitations. That said, Subway was a go to on evenings, but has been forced by price down pressures and the Jared scandal to improvise. Five dollar foot long? No more.

The last time I went to a Sw I asked for their roast beef and a more yellow colored bread with bumps (the breads taste all the same to me), and the meat was sliced so thin you could see through it. I asked for extra and the guy almost panicked. The other guy nodded and he gave me one more paper thin slice. Tomatoes were stale, the lettuce was limp and the smear of mayo I asked for was so little it was more like mayo vapor. I have never gone back and that was 2 years ago. I get my subs now from the grocery deli- loads of meat and lots of stuff on ´em I like. The funny thing is, my grocery deli is only four doors down from the Sw and the sandwiches are cheaper!

Subway has succumbed to too many pressures, including the food nazis and the accountants. Their rolls used tp be great. Then they removed the trans-fats and filled them with air so now there´s hardly any flavor and they have the consistency of puffed sawdust. Also their meats are now sliced so thin that you can barely taste them.

One of the first requirements for a decent sandwich is the bread/roll. My favorite among the fast-food group is Mr. Pickles. They have a truly great tasting Dutch Crunch roll that I would eat even without the very good meats they use (esp. their pastrami).

Here´s my advice: get rid of the food nazis and the accounting geniuses, start making real bread/rolls again, and increase the size of your meat slices...and I´ll be back.

Sorry #2, but the hoagie was invented in Chester, PA and the shops around Delaware County make the best hoagies.

That is the true hoagie.

The main thing that was wrong? The sandwiches made there bore little resemblance to the generous-looking offerings depicted in their television advertising.

And the sometimes curt staff didn’t help.

We have one in a great location: A large new medical complex walking distance from a major hospital, in an area where there are other captive employees with no viable restaurant options nearby. (Unless one counts a fancy Italian place with prices not right for a workday lunch.) This Subway also picks up the tab for three 15 minute parking segment fees, no small item. But it is often disappointing.

Agree with above assessments of the quality of their sandwiches. They need to put a little more meat and cheese on them. Cuts the profit margin a teensy bit, but it would bring customers back to the fold.

I like their bread and the service has always been good. But you can get a sandwich elsewhere with more stuff for the same price. Can´t fight that with ordering tablets and veggie displays.

I had the pleasure of food poisoning from Subway the day of my senior prom. It hit me just before the pick up and get in limo time. I wasn´t the only one who was at that store that day the got hit hard.

Never have I been back to ANY store, and that store was absolutely flattened in sales. Closed soon. They have had serious infractions over the years, and that goes to franchisees, but still - the uniform quality across the board is horrific. Then add the Jared fiasco. You never recover from child molester.

They lost me when the $5 sub hit the road. Just not worth $6+. They are ok but a poor substitute for a real Grinder.

The Grinders in New London in the late 50´s were delivered to the Fulton on Sunday´s. I always ordered ´Hot with Mayo´ with a Pepsi. The delivery came on board by the boxes as nearly every Sailor onboard on a Sunday ordered one. They were delish and have not been equaled since in my life. For a fresh faced teenager from the hills it was an eye opener to the finer points of Italian sandwich making.

I like their sandwiches and most stores are great around here.

The tatooed freakshows making the sandwiches in a few of them are off-putting, though. Some person just covered in tatoos on arms, neck, etc just turns me off. Most around here have nice looking people and they change gloves all the time, cleanliness is very good.

The locations in our area look tired and worn. Sandwiches were OK but nothing to write home about. Tables and floor have visible wear. No lids for soft drinks. And they were low on straws. Only two people working during the lunch hour rush. By the time we left there were 11 people in line which had curled into the small ´dining´ area.

Like poster #4 I gave up on Subway years ago. Great bread made on site, but they were just too skimpy on the fillings. Their strategy was to stuff their sandwiches with lettuce.

I agree with #2 that Publix makes pretty good sandwiches, but they´re not world beaters. If you order their specials when they´re offered ($1.50 or so off the usual price) you can fairly say you´ve gotten your money´s worth.

Publix rolls are made fresh daily and their subs are stuffed, your choice Boars Head or Publix meats, fresh veggies. I like their Ultimate. For special treats we get hot subs from the Firehouse franchise. Subway lost me years ago, took your whole lunch hour get to get served.

I hesitate to disagree with the previous elitist posters. But, out in the wide open there are hundreds of subway outlets in truck stops, in Love´s gas stations in strip malls and just tucked away in very small towns. These places are mobbed during the lunch hour. Subway is the go to stop for truckers, old folks with dietary restrictions and families with young kids. You can get your sandwich however you want. They will slice it into several sections . . . . and they have COOKIES!!!

Subway is much better than other fast food chains . . . . though Chester´s Chicken runs a close second. The last thing you want to do when you are on a long road trip to the real America is try "gourmet" food.

I´ve just recently returned to my local Subway after they started hiring English speaking workers. I had no interest in getting a communicable disease from a fast-food sandwich.

For the same reason, I´ve stopped visiting McDonalds in the neighboring farm town. They replaced their friendly, energetic staff of local high school students with a "bilingual" manager and crew who have no concept of good service.

Greed and product quality decline. Charging 6-8 dollars for a foot long sandwich that has 2-3 ounces of meat in it (for cold cut sandwiches) is not a good business plan. People resent getting ripped off. As many have mentioned, you can see through the meat slices. I do love their broccoli cheddar soup.

I used to really like Subway, but over the past 3-4 years it became impossible not to notice that they were becoming unbelievably stingy with their portions; that the lettuce and other "veggies" were invariably dry, tasteless and stale, and that the "beef" they dole out now has the appearance, in my humble opinion, of dog food. It´s embarrassing to have to ask a server to add "more" just to achieve a serviceable amount of contents for the $6 outlay -- doubly so when the server has a poor grasp of English and an unfriendly attitude.

By the way, what exactly is the etiquette for saying, "uh, could you please give me more food?" Is it possible to ask this question in a dignified way? Putting the customer in a position to have to ask such a thing is a poor business model.

Again, I´m no fast-food snob. I just can´t think of a good reason to patronize Subway given these problems. The tweaks they´re talking about don´t address these issues at all.

As I went through it over the weekend, though, what struck me most was how the wounded Democrat coped after her crushing defeat last November. People who claim to be shocked that Donald Trump is prepared to make an amnesty deal for the"Dreamers" -- most of whom are Mexicans who entered the USA at around the age of six -- are being more than a tad disingenuous. The president has been hinting as much for over a year to anyone paying attention. In fact, it´s hard to conceive how he could have done otherwise, considering the (excuse the cliché) "optics" of shipping 800,000 young people back to a homeland they may never have seen. The question is what your definition of amnesty is. It´s a

Hillary Clinton rejects the idea that a June 2016 meeting between her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch critically damaged her White House bid. “I just don’t buy that,” Clinton said in a PBS interview aired Friday evening to promote her new book, “What Happened,” about her loss last year to Donald Trump. As Clinton has in several other, recent interviews promoting the book, she heaped much of the blame on then-FBI Director James Comey. Comey led the Justice Department investigation into Clinton’s use of private email servers as secretary of state, after Lynch stepped back

Liberal Brown University is set to offer segregated dinners for black and Muslim students on the tail of recent Antifa protests that have turned violent over the last few months. Purporting to offer “racial reconciliation,” Brown administrators took a $300,000 grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to “break down racial hierarchies and create a positive narrative about race in the community,” the College Fix reported. The money was supplied by donations by liberal organizations such as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and Newman’s Own Foundation. There will be two separate segregated “dinner discussion groups,” one for African

Climate change poses less of an immediate threat to the planet than previously thought because scientists got their modelling wrong, a new study has found. New research by British scientists reveals the world is being polluted and warming up less quickly than 10-year-old forecasts predicted, giving countries more time to get a grip on their carbon output. (Snip) The discrepancy means nations could continue emitting carbon dioxide at the current rate for another 20 years before the target was breached, instead of the three to five predicted by the previous model. “When you are talking about a budget of 1.5

U.S. investigators wiretapped President Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort, according to a report by CNN that vindicates the president’s earlier claims, which were mocked as a conspiracy theory. President Trump had tweeted on March 4: “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” (Tweet) Breitbart News editor Joel Pollak had reported the day before Trump’s tweet that the Obama administration “sought, and eventually obtained, authorization to eavesdrop on the Trump campaign: continued monitoring the Trump team even when no evidence of wrongdoing was found.” Trump’s claim,
