Mark Leibovitch, chief national correspondent for the NYT Magazine recorded his impressions of Washington DC, the town that melted down. He paints a portrait of Sean Spicer trying to survive "in the shadow of a capricious force". He sketches John McCain, in a permanent funk "traveling the globe to the point of weariness, seemingly on a personal mission to reassure allies unnerved by Trump." He describes the institutional Republicans walking around looking "as if they were bracing for a chandelier to drop on their heads". Most compelling of all are cameos of the bit players: the staff members, lobbyists, newspeople,

Zuckerberg has once again proven that even a pea-brained geek can become a billionaire but that will not bring climate change any closer to reality.

Yes, "institutional Republicans" have every reason to worry. Their collective efforts to preserve the crime known as Obamacare is going to force every one of them to seek gainful employment elsewhere, at least the ones who are not too old and senile to do actual work. However, if their ultimate hope is to see Obamacare crash and burn completely before the GOP plan is implemented then I will make my apology.

FTA: Unfortunately there is no a priori way to distinguish between "creative destruction" and long-term decline. They look too much alike at the start. For all too many "disruptive innovation" will be indistinguishable, in the short run at least, from unemployment. (Snip) The GOP side is behaving like survivors shouting out a headcount after a collision to see who´s left alive. Among the Dems only Sanders is faintly stirring under the wreckage but ever more faintly.

It appears that Bernie´s wife is in legal trouble, which does him no good for a 2020 run when he´ll be approaching eighty. The Democrats have, as a party, gone over to the dark side--they are de facto socialists now--while the ideologically timid Republicans don´t want to appear too different from the opposition. President Trump is there to shake things up, to change what has long been regarded as settled. That´s a tough job, but somebody had to do it.

I became interested in Leibovich when I read The Town, an excellent exposé on the place we love to hate. However later material from him revealed that he was as hardcore a Democrat as any of the other media types.

A new study from a couple of media/academic sources in Germany finds that the German media colluded with its government to hide the truth about the migrant crisis that flooded the country as part and parcel of Chancellor Angela Merkel´s ´let ´em all in´ refugee policy. (Snip) That´s not the finding of some right wing blog, but the piece-by-piece analysis of two leftish think tanks who took a good look at the problem and found the press - including papers such as Bild, Die Welt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, wanting. A friend has directed my attention to Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution of the United States. The whole section, which sets forth the president’s powers, is worth pondering. But given the fact that the Democrats in Congress seem to be slow-walking (that’s bureaucratese for “obstructing”) Donald Trump’s nominations, I would like to call the president’s attention to the interesting concluding passage of Section 2: The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session. Recess appointments have been made

For the last 15 years, I have been making good educational use of Lennon´s famous song "Imagine." In one of my classes, analyzing the song helps Japanese students think critically about song lyrics. The song is very well known and popular in Japan, in part because Lennon´s wife was Japanese. Yoko Ono´s leftist beliefs also left their mark on the content of the song, a fact that will probably soon receive official recognition by the National Music Publishers Association. The song´s doubtful assumptions and internal contradictions make it an instructive instance of the sloppy, shallow thinking we often find in the

My conservative cousin from New York has been following New York City mayors since the days of Robert F. Wagner, Jr. I think John Lindsey remains his nominee for the worst of the lot, but the current mayor seems to be closing in fast. My cousin reports: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is an ardent admirer of Communist Cuba and the Sandinistas. He presides over a town whose economic success is powered by the kind of bare knuckled capitalism that, in the Mayor’s Marxist worldview, is consigned to the dustbin of history. His city is filled with immigrant strivers, including

Watergate ended with a whimper, not a bang. After months of sturm und drang, Richard Nixon finally mounted that helicopter, gave that famous farewell peace sign and flew away. Most Americans were relieved to see him go. Our long national nightmare was over. If something similar happens to Donald Trump, it will be entirely different. A significant portion of the American public — myself admittedly among them — will be convinced he has been railroaded in a partisan hatchet job. The voters who elected the president are going to feel, at the very least, undermined, more likely betrayed, by their own

We´re six months into the Trump presidency and it´s worth asking: When you eliminate the febrile fantasies of the left (sometimes called "journalism" or "the news" by people who work in "journalism" or "the news") and when you tune out the grave harumphs of the intellectual He´s-Not-Quite-The-Thing right wing, and when you ignore too the lovestruck dreamy-dreams of the Trump Right or Wrong Fan Club, what are we left with? In fact, it seems to me — a reluctant Trump voter — President The Donald has done a pretty darn good job so far. Rough-hewn, inexperienced and sometimes too much of

Saturday´s record scoring showed the potential to go low at Royal Birkdale when there´s little wind help defend the course, but barring something truly extraordinary, the 146th Open Championships has become a two-man race. Brendan Grace would need to follow up his record-breaking 62 with another score in the mid-60s, or maybe it could be Dustin Johnson matching his Saturday score of 64, but even in those cases it will take a series of errors from the final group for the Claret Jug to be awarded to anyone other than Jordan Spieth or Matt Kuchar. Authorities in Florida say that a group of teenagers recorded the drowning of a disabled man last week — and did nothing to help as they made fun of his struggles. Jamel Dunn, 32, of Cocoa, drowned in a retention pond July 9. His body was recovered July 14, two days after his fiancee reported him missing. Late last week, a friend of Dunn´s family came across the video on social media and forwarded it to authorities in Brevard County. In the video, which was published by the Florida Today newspaper Thursday, the teens can be heard laughing at Dunn

When it comes to apologetics and confusion about the endless campaign of Palestinian Arab terrorism against Israel, the Associated Press has nothing on the Department of State. See, for example, Adam Kredo’s two recent Washington Free Beacon accounts, “State Dept. blames Israel for terrorism, claims Palestinians rarely incite attacks” (July 20) and “Trump State Dept. unsure why Palestinian terrorists kill Israelis” (July 21). The source documents related to Kredo’s stories are the State Department’s just-released Country Reports on Terrorism 2016 (July 2017) and Rep. Peter Roskam’s letter to Secretary of State Tillerson (July 20). The State Department report blames Israel for

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s legal team is evaluating potential conflicts of interest among members of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigative team, three people with knowledge of the matter said Thursday. The revelations come as Mueller’s investigation appears likely to probe some of the Trump family’s business ties. Attorney Jay Sekulow, a member of the president’s external legal team, told The Associated Press that the lawyers “will consistently evaluate the issue of conflicts and raise them in the appropriate venue.” Two people with knowledge of that process say those efforts include probing the political affiliations of Mueller’s investigators and their past

Jeb’s jab appeared to be a thinly veiled reference to GOP leadership going easy on Trump for not criticizing Russia for its alleged meddling in U.S. elections. While there are doubtless celebrations in Moscow, the news that Sen. Shot down over North Vietnam, crippled by wounds and tortured, McCain refused early release and remained in his Hanoi prison, suffering for years beside his comrades. Returning home at last, on crutches, he dedicated himself to serving the people of Arizona and the
