The FBI has reportedly joined local and state agencies to investigate what caused a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 to corkscrew out of the sky and into a soybean field in Mississippi, killing at least 16. The search for additional victims is continuing. The Marine Corps said the aircraft “experienced a mishap.” The plane spiraled down at about 4 p.m. in a field about 85 miles north of Jackson. The plane’s debris were scattered in a radius of about five miles. Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks told The Associated Press that officials were still searching for bodies after nightfall. If debris was scattered of a 5 mile radius as in the article, it broke up in flight at some altitude. Sounds like some type of explosion to me.

Yeah, this is definitely strange. A full stall? These are very safe and airworthy planes. Unless it was s screw driver or some other kind of FOD (foreign object damage) lodged in a flight control linkage or an uncontrolled fuel tank transfer beyond cg limits, the eyewitness account of spiraling down is a head scratcher.

The C-130 is the most stable, dependable aircraft I know. It is called the Hercules, “Battle Herc.” for short. Very dependable. I honestly cannot remember the last
time I heard of one crashing in a peacetime training mission.

I do not know the mission of this particular flight, but that squadron’s mission is aerial refueling. Usually, back in the day, planes did not carry pax on refueling missions. If the fuel pod is removed, the aircraft can be converted for other missions i.e., troop transport or Puff the Gunship.

I wanted to write this to you all and ask that you remember in your thoughts and morning prayers the 16 Marines and the families they leave behind. Only the Good Lord knows why this particular bad thing happened to these good people, but we must trust in His wisdom; He is holding them in the palm of His hands.

I look forward to potter´s thoughts.

The KC prefix indicates that the 130 was a tanker (airborne refueling aircraft), used to refuel other aircraft, probably helicopters. It is possible that the explosion was from fuel being ignited as a result of a leak.

8, I´m right above you and agree with your comments. And yeah, 16 souls onboard wouldn´t be refueling nor a functional check flight unless rules have changed. They were closest to Millington so a Fam ride for wrench turning school students is a possibility. A spiral from altitude though to me might be caused by a full stall or exxeeding cg limits from an aft fuel tank which would cause a stall. Like you say, these are extremely safe and airworthy pieces of gear.

Obviously there was an explosion on board that aircraft as it was flying at medium altitude. Such an explosion would cause a structural failure of the aircraft. That´s why the wreckage landed over a wide area. Right now those are the facts that the FBI has to work with.

Structural failure --- how old is the aircraft and what maneuver were they doing, at what airspeed? Odd to have so many aboard a KC (refueling bird).

If not a bomb, then next thought is age of aircraft and possible metal fatigue. Next is CG limits and airspeed during maneuvering.
AFAIK, the military does not have the same sort of black boxes on their transports as civilian airliners. May be much less data available, may have to depend on radar and radio comm info.

Having spent 8yrs in the Air Force, I can safely state the the overwhelming accidents with a 130 is caused by pilot error. That A/C is one of the most safe that there is. And like already said, if that A/C blew up in flight, there had to be some sort of fuel problem that caused it. By the way, I´ve ridden all over the world in one of those and wouldn´t hesitate to fly in one again.

This would not be the first time a C130 had a spar failure with wing separation. The story doesn´t say how old this particular plane was. But we have been building and buying C130s since the mid 1950s. A few years back a C130 that had been converted to civilian use as a "water bomber" fire tanker had a wing failure and crashed, killing the crew. With bodies found a couple of miles from the crash site, it sounds like the airplane broke up in mid-air. An explosion? A wing spar failure on a tired old bird? Who knows--give the folks a chance to investigate what happened.

I don´t think it is weird at all that the FBI is investigating this. What would be aggravating is their spokesperson coming out immediately and denying that terrorism was to blame.

I am glad to see that the level of expertise still holds with my favorite longtimer commenters at Lucianne. I know that when I want experienced opinions, I can come here.

Deepest sympathies to the grieving families of these brave Marines. I hope the officials find whatever answers they need to answer our questions.

What struck me about all the crash pictures I saw last night on the Daily Mail was how the plane was virtually intact. Someone said it appeared to be upside down because they thought they could see the rear cargo door. I´m sure they will eventually find the cause of this tragedy but the loss of the Marines is so very sad.

Like the Fitz collision, nobody will know exactly why until the AMB (Aviation Mishap Board) has finished its Mishap Report and releases stuff that is not for pilot´s eyes only. The parallel legal investigation is also ongoing which is the MIR, Mishap Investigation Report and its info is what the press will get to report on. Both are different groups of people trying to get to the same or similar conclusions. The MR exists to basically figure out what happened and how to prevent it from ever happening again. Many times the MR is for pilot´s eyes only so that people involved can openly tell the board what they did wrong and use that info to help every pilot not to do it. The MIR is there to basically find out who did what wrong and hammer the guilty guys. Both boards are supposed to act independently and perform independent investigations. I say all that to say, it usually takes a long time to figure out the whole ball of twine.

My guesses are just that, guesses based on Marine Corps and Navy reserve flying as well as aviation safety officer experience. I have no idea why, just guesses but I do doubt it´s terrorism.

It is puzzling whenever a very safe aircraft falls out of the sky and like everyone else I fall prey to the initial articles with eyewitnesses (civilian eyewitnesses are usually the worst source of accident investigation information).

No one´s going to know for sure until the MIR and MR are completed and even then the conclusions may not disclose exactly what and why.

Almost no commentator, no reviewer, has mentioned the most newsworthy fact about Hillary Clinton´s latest memoir—which is the near total lack of anything actually newsworthy in the book. With What Happened, Clinton would at last "let down her hair," Simon & Schuster´s publicists loudly proclaimed before the book´s publication. ST. LOUIS • About 1,000 protesters surrounded the home of St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson in the Central West End late Friday, breaking at least two windows and throwing red paint at the brick house before some 200 police in riot gear moved in to break it up. There was no indication on the scene that Krewson was in the home at the time. A total of 9 police officers had been reported injured as of 9 p.m., including one officer with a dislocated shoulder and an officer with a possible broken jaw, Acting Police Chief Lawrence O´Toole said shortly after midnight
