Boost to Redskins case: Supreme Court says
government can’t refuse disparaging trademarks

The government cannot censor trademarks on the grounds they may be offensive to some, the Supreme Court ruled Monday in a major decision that could also clear the way for the Washington Redskins football team to maintain its trademarks. The case before the high court involved an Asian rock band named “The Slants.” The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office originally denying the band’s name, saying it was a racial slur that violated the agency’s policy, based on federal law, that prohibits granting disparaging trademarks. Justices, though, said that violated the First Amendment. “Speech may not be banned on the ground

I heard a quote about this ruling that wasn´t in the article, and of course, I can´t recall it, exactly.

Effectively, it said the words might be offensive to some, but that they were not being used to disparage an individual or group.

The Slants are calling themselves that, and the Redskins are doing exactly the opposite of disparaging.

And I´m still a cracker.

I have hypothesized that were there no Indians, Braves, Redskins or Warriors as team names, that would be evidence of racism in the eyes of the easily offended.

Could the NCAA run into trouble for this? If the college team has trademarked its logo and mascot, is the NCAA violating freedom of speech. Yes its a private organization but the public schools that are part of the NCAA can´t, by law prohibit free speech. One wonders.

Who in their right mind would choose a disparaging word as a trademark? If a word is chosen, it´s typically because it honors rather than disparages, as is the case with the Redskins.

Launched by Brian Farnham of Palm Beach, FL, the statues represent the "worst parts of human nature" and would fit well on Trump´s estate. His full campaign statement: President Moral Black Hole is a big fan of all the "beautiful" statues of Confederate war heroes that were put up by white supremacists in the Twenties. What started out 16 months ago as a scandal involving the alleged theft of computer equipment from Congress has turned into a national-security investigation involving FBI surveillance of the suspects. Investigators now suspect that sensitive US government data — possibly including classified information — could have been compromised and may have been sold to hostile foreign governments that could use it to blackmail members of Congress or even put their lives at risk.

Thousands of anti-fascist protesters are marching through the streets of Boston in protest of right-wing activists hosting a ´free speech´ rally on Saturday. Only a handful of attendees could be spotted against the swarm of the estimated 15,000 counter-protesters who chanted loudly as they made their way towards Boston Common. Organizers of the rally had attempted to distance themselves from the neo-Nazis, white supremacists and others who fomented violence in Charlottesville last week. The city mayor had pleaded for counter-protesters to stay away, saying their presence would draw more attention to the far-right activists and could result in violence.
