Boost to Redskins case: Supreme Court says
government can’t refuse disparaging trademarks

The government cannot censor trademarks on the grounds they may be offensive to some, the Supreme Court ruled Monday in a major decision that could also clear the way for the Washington Redskins football team to maintain its trademarks. The case before the high court involved an Asian rock band named “The Slants.” The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office originally denying the band’s name, saying it was a racial slur that violated the agency’s policy, based on federal law, that prohibits granting disparaging trademarks. Justices, though, said that violated the First Amendment. “Speech may not be banned on the ground

I heard a quote about this ruling that wasn´t in the article, and of course, I can´t recall it, exactly.

Effectively, it said the words might be offensive to some, but that they were not being used to disparage an individual or group.

The Slants are calling themselves that, and the Redskins are doing exactly the opposite of disparaging.

And I´m still a cracker.

I have hypothesized that were there no Indians, Braves, Redskins or Warriors as team names, that would be evidence of racism in the eyes of the easily offended.

Could the NCAA run into trouble for this? If the college team has trademarked its logo and mascot, is the NCAA violating freedom of speech. Yes its a private organization but the public schools that are part of the NCAA can´t, by law prohibit free speech. One wonders.

Who in their right mind would choose a disparaging word as a trademark? If a word is chosen, it´s typically because it honors rather than disparages, as is the case with the Redskins.

Actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner was shredded by social media users over the weekend after he called for an “all out war” to resist President Donald Trump. Writing on Twitter Sunday, the All in the Family star mentioned a Fox News report about the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia during the 2016 election. “When Fox says that DT colluding with the enemy is not a crime, the fight to save Democracy is now an all out war. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump will meet for the first time on Monday. Their conversation will set the tone for future U.S.-India relations. Currently, U.S.-India relations are on a positive trajectory, and this meeting gives Trump the opportunity to reaffirm that. The Heritage Foundation has laid out some top priorities for the head of states’ conversation: The United States previous policy toward India has centered on the country remaining strong. A strong India provides for more regional stability and in turn strengthens U.S.-India relations. Trump has the opportunity to affirm the need for India’s continued growth

NEW YORK— Say you’re a storyteller whose TV show draws inspiration from real-life Washington. Whether portraying the noble geopolitics of “Madam Secretary” or the dirty deeds on “House of Cards,” the high-stakes fumbling on “Veep” or the scourge of terrorism that haunts “Homeland,” script writers have always faced the challenge of staying topical yet inventive without straying outside the bounds of plausibility. Then the Donald Trump presidency struck. Almost overnight the unexpected or unthinkable became the new normal, with real-life drama constantly threatening to outdo anything the cleverest writer could dream up. A feminist magazine is calling on all white women to “do their part to prevent white supremacy” and abort their white babies. This is sick beyond words. Systemic white supremacy depends, first and foremost, on the white family unit. When white conquerors forcefully penetrated the indigenous, egalitarian homeland of the Native peoples of America, they were quick to replicate their white societies, initiating their parasitism by establishing white plantations, headed by white fathers, submissive white mothers, and,

The police sent 25 squad cars, yet were outnumbered and unable to really do anything. (snip)Obviously, there is no political will to take back control of the streets. I’ve been talking about the importance of protecting against voting-machine hacks since 2002. And now, finally, people are starting to take me seriously. The move to paperless voting started in response to the Florida “hanging chad” fiasco in the 2000 presidential election. Some people (like me) thought this was a mistake, but such concerns were often dismissed. Now, apparently, you can’t be paranoid enough. As Politico’s Bob King noted, while 10 years ago critics of paperless voting were called paranoid, now both parties are worried. It remains true that there is no actual evidence that a single vote was changed by hackers

Justices said the lower court rulings that blocked Mr. Trump’s policy were far too broad, and said the president can begin to enforce his ban against foreigners who don’t already have some ties to the U.S. That means the president can begin denying visas to visitors from six countries — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — who don’t already have family in the U.S., or some other prior connection such as
