Supreme Court strikes down sex
offender social media ban

Associated Press, by Mark Sherman

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 6/19/2017 1:53:40 PM

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court struck down a North Carolina law Monday that bars convicted sex offenders from Facebook, Twitter and other popular sites. The justices ruled unanimously in favor of North Carolina resident Lester Packingham Jr. His Facebook boast about beating a traffic ticket led to his conviction for violating a 2008 law aimed at keeping sex offenders off internet sites children might use. The court rejected the state’s argument that the law deals with the virtual world in the same way that states keep sex offenders out of playgrounds and other places children visit.

I actually agree with this. The Constitution doesn´t say we forfeit our right to political speech just because we have been convicted of a crime. If the goobernment can limit political speech due to a particular crime, then it can limited political speech with any crime. Sexual predators are despicable to be sure. And we as a society must do all that is possible to protect children. But eliminating rights isn´t the way to do that cause it opens the door to limit all our rights. One can imagine Chicago making it a crime to be on Facebook after being convicted of having obtained an unregistered illegal firearm. Or making it illegal to be on twitter after being arrested at an anti-abortion protest. Limiting free speech is an attack on all our rights to free political speech.

The Supremes are the only group of Judges in America that I know of who don´t always have a clue when it comes to the virtual world of the internet, or to how to protect kids from the deviants of the world.

They really need to get a clue and get up to speed. Free speech is something to protect certainly. But that should not give predators the right to prowl where the young hang out.

Unilateral SCOTUS judicial review of state law is unConstitutional, period. Marbury v Madison is what must be "nullified". SCOTUS can (and should) render its opinion on the matter, but should then remand it back to the state or federal legislature responsible for it.

There is a world of difference between a burglar or a car thief or an embezzler and a sexual predator who uses the internet to find victims.

There’s another “explosive” and “exclusive” article from the latest chaf and countermeasures unit, Sara Carter, reporting Ben Rhodes as a “subject of interest” for the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into ‘unethical’ and possibly ‘illegal’ unmasking. Understandably all discussion, and likely a large segment of Sean Hannity’s TV show, will focus on the intended target of the newly drawn attention. However, what’s more interesting to those who look into the deep swamp is the identification of Carter’s sources: ie. who’s feeding her? “according to congressional sources who spoke with Circa.” Track down who those people are – and you’ll identify the motives therein. Almost no-one has ever watched Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, Eric Cantor, John Boehner AND republican leadership of the Freedom Caucus admit they intentionally hide their support for amnesty and immigration reform because they knew the electorate doesn’t support it. In a perfect and disinterested world, when Washington, D.C. is deluged in scandal, a nonpartisan investigator or prosecutor should survey the contemporary rotten landscape. He would then distinguish the likely guilty from the probably falsely accused—regardless of the political consequences at stake. In the real cosmos of Washington, however, the majority party—the group that controls the House, Senate, presidency, and U.S. Supreme Court—if it were necessary, would de facto appoint the government’s own special investigatory team, and then allow it to follow where leads dictate. Its majority status would assure that there were no political opponents in control of the investigations,

The appointment of Kenneth Smith on Monday was bigger than the appointment of retired Marine General John Kelly as President Trump´s glorified office manager. Trump did not appoint Smith. Mexico did. This is one of many signs that President Trump´s agenda is progressing. From the Wall Street Journal: Mexico appointed its chief negotiator in coming talks to rewrite the North American Free Trade Agreement, giving the role to a career bureaucrat with 20 years of experience in trade negotiations who heads the trade office at Mexico’s embassy in Washington, D.C. The Department of Homeland Security has released data showing how former President Barack Obama gave work permits to roughly 2.3 million migrants for U.S. jobs in 2016. The award of 2.3 million work permits was added to the 2016 inflow of roughly 1.1 million new legal immigrants and roughly 500,000 outsourcing visa workers, such as the H-1B white-collar workers. The combined inflow delivered 4 million legal foreign workers to Americans’ economy in 2016, just as 4 million young Americans turned 18 and began looking for decently paid jobs. From 2012 to 2016, Obama boosted this little-recognized work-permit inflow by 73

On the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Germany last month, President Trump’s advisers discussed how to respond to a new revelation that Trump’s oldest son had met with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign — a disclosure the advisers knew carried political and potentially legal peril. The strategy, the advisers agreed, should be for Donald Trump Jr. to release a statement to get ahead of the story. They wanted to be truthful, so their account couldn’t be repudiated later if the full details emerged. But within hours, at the president’s direction, the plan changed. Flying home

Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio was convicted on Monday of defying a court order to stop rounding up immigrants, and he may face jail time — another rebuke for a once-popular politician who was voted out of office last year. In 24 years as sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., Mr. Arpaio built a national reputation for harsh conditions in his county jail, and for his campaign against undocumented immigrants; his deputies detained people solely based on a belief that they were in the country illegally, and then turn them over to immigration authorities for deportation.
