Another day in Florida, another alligator hit by a vehicle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 27-year-old motorcyclist from Wimauma was traveling westbound on State Road 674 just west of Katie Stanaland in Hillsborough County around 12:28 a.m. Friday. At the same time, a 10-foot, 9-inch alligator was crossing the road in front of him. The motorcyclist hit the alligator, throwing him from the motorcycle. He landed on the Little Manatee River overpass. The man was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries. The alligator was listed in critical condition and was picked up by alligator trapper Rob Upthegrove, according to

Alligators should stick to the lakes, bogs, and estuaries, and leave the macadam to us motorists.

... but at least the Black Hills riders rarely hit an alligator, poster #1! (If Algore is right, that could soon change, as alligators escape to the cooler northern climes.)

Wow! Poor motorcyclists in Florida - no chance! If you don´t get smacked by a texting doofus or a "seasoned" citizen... you may smack a ´gator!

"Duh!" comment of the year: If you see an alligator on the road, use caution.

President Trump´s speech yesterday in Warsaw was better than inspiring. It was calculating and subtle, and sent strong messages to both our friends and adversaries. The crowd of cavilers who abhor Trump as an ignoramus should hang their heads in shame. (Snip) There is a double message to Moscow here. First, the United States has drawn a red line at the Polish border, making clear that America will shed blood if need be to defend its Polish ally. Second, the line is drawn around Poland, not Ukraine. The United States is prepared to reach an agreement with Russia over Ukraine if

David Gerlenter writing in the Wall Street Journal says something self-evidently true. The Left seems to have won every single culture battle fought. "Although the right reads the left, the left rarely reads the right. Why should it, when the left owns American culture? Nearly every university, newspaper, TV network, Hollywood studio, publisher, education school and museum in the nation. The left wrapped up the culture war two generations ago. Throughout my own adult lifetime, the right has never made one significant move against the liberal culture machine." The late Andrew Breitbart noticed the same thing. Observing that "politics is downstream from

A Florida plane crash scene became even more disturbing when an alligator was spotted devouring the victim’s body. The wreckage was discovered Wednesday night in the Everglades four days after the plane took off on an unauthorized trip from a flight school, according to WPLG. The sole occupant of the single-engine Cessna 152 was the pilot, who has not been identified. Local news station WPLG headed to the scene, where helicopter footage showed a body in a swamp next to the wreckage — and an alligator wading nearby. “A gator appears to be chewing on a body next to the wreckage,” WPLG managing

In the first decade of the 21st century Western economic growth entered the doldrums. The question was why. Former Harvard president Larry Summers noticed that something changed after the 2008 financial meltdown. The economic spring which had always bounced back had lost its elasticity. He diagnosed it as secular stagnation. (Snip) The existence of this beast had been mooted for some time. But many economists doubted the animal actually existed. Paul Krugman, whose solution to low growth is government spending was disturbed by Summers thesis that stimulus spending was not working this time. Krugman wrote "the radical part of Larry’s

Representatives of the G20 countries are meeting in Hamburg, so the traveling circus of anti-capitalist rioters naturally showed up. As best one can tell, it is more or less the same people who turn out for all of these anti-capitalism demonstrations around the world. They don’t appear to have jobs, and quite a few of them are reported to be trust fund babies. These photos from Hamburg are typical; they come from the Sun. The “blue slip”–the power of senators to block judicial nominations within their states–is a venerable Senate tradition that has long outlived its usefulness. Similar to the filibuster, liberals view the blue slip either as incorrigible obstructionism or as the height of prudent constitutionalism, depending only on which party’s president is nominating judges. Thus, when Barack Obama was doing the nominating, Jeffrey Toobin, in a New Yorker article headlined “Blue-Slip Battle: The Senate Obstructionists’ Secret Weapon,” wrote: [A]s the blue-slip process illustrates, the Senate remains a balky, hidebound, and inefficient institution, and the President’s opponents will continue to do their best to keep

If you want to know why Donald Trump will go down in history as a great president, listen to (or read, when it is available) his speech in Krasinski Square, Warsaw today. Yes, there is a lot of the usual diplomatic persiflage: “Thank you, President Duda. Thank you, Poland.” But be an adult and distinguish the gem from the setting. While the anti-Trump press was busy running stories warning about “unease in Brussels” over Trump’s visit to Poland, Trump once again totally outflanked his critics. Those who have ears, let them hear: 1. The United States is absolutely committed to securing

In an interview with the German Welt am Sonntag newspaper, Gates said massive population growth in Africa will result in “enormous [migratory] pressure” on Europe unless countries increase

Goliath, the biblical giant, wasn´t known for bothering fishermen. But the gigantic fish named after him — which can weigh up to 800 pounds — is notorious for exactly that. Now Florida fishermen want to strike back at the goliath grouper. In February, they petitioned the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to allow a limited open season on the goliath grouper. They said the massive fish lurks underwater, pouncing whenever a fisherman has caught something by spear or fishing line. "Every time we go offshore fishing, they´re pretty much eating our fish," said Capt. Jim Limke, owner of the fishing charter

Every now and again but especially on the Fourth of July an article appears describing how a foreigner falls in or out of love with America. Dozens have been written over the years. The important term in these articles is the nature of the love professed and not its object. What does it mean when an Upper Slobovian falls in love with, or learns to hate America? Perhaps they mean admiration. We often confuse ´love´ for admiration when these are two different things. Infatuation is naturally bestowed on the magnificent, but love is something different; ironically reserved for something whose

Donald Trump has reportedly had trouble getting a hotel room for the upcoming G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. Early on election night last November, artist Bunny Burson looked to New York City’s Javits Center ceiling, expecting confetti to fall to celebrate Hillary Clinton becoming the nation´s first woman president. But the confetti never fell. Crushed by Clinton’s loss to President Donald Trump, Burson began an almost two-week journey to track down the confetti, which she thought would make great material for artwork.
