Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee statue
coming down in New Orleans: Live updates

Times-Picayune [New Orleans], by Staff

The last of four Confederate monuments New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu wants removed from public property, the statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee, is set to spend just a few more hours looking to the north from its 60-foot column as crews prepare to remove it Friday (May 19). Barricades were set up in Thursday afternoon, leading most to believe it would be taken down overnight. Monument supporters and opponents gathered anticipating the statue´s removal, but the mayor´s office announced the removal would happen during the day Friday, starting at 9 a.m. The city expects the process to be finished

Comments:
A full disgrace; maggots gnawing at a giant. And most likely, Mitch Landrieu will be the last white mayor of New Orleans, seeing how white people are the cause of every evil.

General Lee was a top graduate of West Point, was offered leadership of the Union army, instead chose to remain loyal to his home state of Virginia. He fought the good fight and decided on the unthinkable of Surrender ... to save lives.

I think we should honor this man.

We can thank anchor baby and former SC Gov Nikki Haley for starting the movement to remove anything relating to the Confederacy.

Obviously, the only respect she has is for her Indian heritage as she was married in India in a typical over the top Indian wedding.

I recall when she and fellow anchor baby Marco Rubio were constantly meeting in private and also attending rallys together during the primaries regardless per the Constitution they weren´t eligible for any office higher than senator.

That War Criminal deliberately targeted Civilian populations and specifically targeted Jewish Americans (General Order #11).

He deserves to be court martial-led and NOT honored.

Now the trouble will really begin in New Orleans (Detroit on the bayou). The Black Lives Matter organization will demand more removals starting with the Andrew Jackson statue in the French Quarter. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I actually don´t have a problem with a culture redefining who they are and deciding on what public art and monuments should represent them, even if that means removing some...

But I do think it is a shame that Lee gets included in this. As #4 pointed out so well, Lee was honorable opposition. If the statue removers knew more about him (I blame public schools run by liberals that they don´t), I think they´d reconsider.

Visited any of the eight counties in America named in General Lee´s honor? Been aboard The United State´s Navy´s fleet ballistic missile submarine, USS Robert E. Lee? Visited Fort Lee, Virginia? Driven the Lee Highway through the incredibly beautiful Shenandoah Valley in the springtime? Read a book about General Lee´s deep spiritually, opposition to slavery and wonderful family?

That Robert E. Lee´s statue was placed to see in the direction where the enemy would return is close to prophetic. The enemy came, saw and conquered. Will the history books and museums be cleansed of these brave confederate protectors?

For 17 years I saw Lee watching over New Orleanians. I usually smiled inwardly at Lee´s care for his people. Shame indeed, #14, on those emulating the destroyers of the Buddhas of Bamiyanindeed.
