"Security" is the New "Shut Up" (Again)
Steyn Online, by Mark Steyn

Original Article

On Thursday night, Mark joined Tucker Carlson at Fox News to discuss the ever more open hostility to right-leaning speakers at American campuses: Berkeley recently reversed its cancellation of conservative author Ann Coulter´s speech, but moved it to another date and time. Its chancellor, Nicholas Dirks, said he was "gravely concerned" by Coulter´s announcement she would show up on campus even after the cancellation, threatening "safety" precautions. Steyn called Dirks´ response a "creepy, weasely and evasive speech"... He said colleges like Berkeley now simply claim there are security concerns when a conservative speaker appears, but will not take action against violent rioters that

These are two of my favorite men on TV. Mark Steyn is so clever, intelligent and profound. I love listening to him.

Americans are mostly scardycats. They are willing to surrender their liberties for security because some politician they like says they will be protected, and it´s necessary to be monitored or muzzled, or otherwise restricted in activity.

After 9/11 Americans left the gate wide open, and most of the horses are gone - we´re all being monitored, some more actively than others, and all that data is dumped in the government´s memory banks out in the desert. This "security" is supposed to make us safer...like the war on drugs is supposed to end that social and physical scourge.

We now find the "trusted" intel apparatus is being used against politicians by politicians. Against private citizens, too. But you have nothing to hide, do you? The Constitution will protect you, right?

Feel safe yet?

Rioting is not ´speech´.
These people should be jailed and then Berkeley won´t have to worry about ´security´.

Ann was right. Expel students who riot. Period.

If they expelled all who riot in Berkeley, California might avoid bankruptcy since nearly all students are on ´´scholarship.´´

How many of these masked people are the sons of wealthy white men, acting out their white guilt?

My guess is ~90%. If otherwise, they could always show up as a member, or an "ally" of BLM or the p#$%^-hats or somesuch.

In order to overcome the "privilege," they´re going to extremes to show they´re down with the Cause.

These are the tactics of totalitarian fascists leftists. It has been for about 100 years. Safety! Safety! "You can´t (insert reason here) because of public safety."

The fact of the matter is that they allow the violence so that they can suppress the voices of reason. If a leftist speaks, then there is hell to pay for any protesters from the right. They incite violence, then blame the victims for the incitement.

These are dangerous times for free speech and thought.

What Is the Alternative

National Review Online, by Victor Davis Hanson    Original Article

If they weren’t trying to destroy the president, Democrats would have to focus on an agenda most Americans don’t support. By 1968, voters had tired of the failed Great Society of Lyndon Johnson. Four years later, the 1972 Nixon reelection re-emphasized that a doubled-down McGovern liberalism was even less of a viable agenda. In that context, in 1974, obsessing on Watergate and a demonized Nixon were wise liberal alternatives to running on a positive left-wing vision, given the growing conservative backlash of the 1970s. After Watergate and the Ford pardon, Jimmy Carter squeaked to a close victory and a one-term presidency

The Senate Judiciary Committee will attempt during a closed-door hearing Wednesday to get to the bottom of the alleged “unmasking” of Trump campaign and transition officials by the Obama White House — furthering a potentially explosive counter-narrative coursing beneath the various congressional probes into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Former National Security Adviser Susan E. Rice, in addition to other top officials from the Obama administration, have come under suspicion during recent months amid accusations that they inappropriately “unmasked” requests to identify Trump associates caught up in clandestine surveillance of Russian operatives prior to and during the

More and more foreign Islamic State fighters are returning to European countries that want nothing to do with them. Oil-eating microbes ate most of the oil BP spilled into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, according to new research by scientists with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The study discovered and sequenced the DNA of a new type of natural oil-eating bacteria. Knowing how oil-eating bacteria behave will help prevent future oil spills from doing as much damage to the environmental as the BP spill. “Our study demonstrated the importance of using dispersants in producing neutrally buoyant, tiny oil droplets, which kept much of the oil from reaching the ocean surface,” Dr. Hary Andersen, a microbial ecologist at Berkley

The lawsuit has to do with an editorial the NYT ran on June 14 that falsely smeared Palin as inciting the 2011 shooting of Democratic Rep. There is no evidence to support the NYT’s implication that Palin played a role in inciting the Giffords shooting. “Mrs. Palin brings this action to hold The Times accountable for defaming her by publishing a statement about her

The Trump administration on Tuesday began the process of formally rescinding the highly controversial “Waters of the U.S.” rule, an Obama-era regulation that gave Washington broad powers over streams and other small bodies of water across the country. The rule, put forth in 2015 but subsequently stayed by the Supreme Court before going into effect, was one of EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt’s top targets when he took the helm at the agency. President Trump earlier this year signed an executive order directing Mr. Pruitt to review the rule, and with Tuesday’s action, the EPA says it’s finalized that review and will

I’ve been talking about the importance of protecting against voting-machine hacks since 2002. And now, finally, people are starting to take me seriously. The move to paperless voting started in response to the Florida “hanging chad” fiasco in the 2000 presidential election. Some people (like me) thought this was a mistake, but such concerns were often dismissed. Now, apparently, you can’t be paranoid enough. As Politico’s Bob King noted, while 10 years ago critics of paperless voting were called paranoid, now both parties are worried. It remains true that there is no actual evidence that a single vote was changed by hackers

Justices said the lower court rulings that blocked Mr. Trump’s policy were far too broad, and said the president can begin to enforce his ban against foreigners who don’t already have some ties to the U.S. That means the president can begin denying visas to visitors from six countries — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — who don’t already have family in the U.S., or some other prior connection such as
