"Security" is the New "Shut Up" (Again)
Steyn Online, by Mark Steyn

On Thursday night, Mark joined Tucker Carlson at Fox News to discuss the ever more open hostility to right-leaning speakers at American campuses: Berkeley recently reversed its cancellation of conservative author Ann Coulter´s speech, but moved it to another date and time. Its chancellor, Nicholas Dirks, said he was "gravely concerned" by Coulter´s announcement she would show up on campus even after the cancellation, threatening "safety" precautions. Steyn called Dirks´ response a "creepy, weasely and evasive speech"... He said colleges like Berkeley now simply claim there are security concerns when a conservative speaker appears, but will not take action against violent rioters that

These are two of my favorite men on TV. Mark Steyn is so clever, intelligent and profound. I love listening to him.

Americans are mostly scardycats. They are willing to surrender their liberties for security because some politician they like says they will be protected, and it´s necessary to be monitored or muzzled, or otherwise restricted in activity.

After 9/11 Americans left the gate wide open, and most of the horses are gone - we´re all being monitored, some more actively than others, and all that data is dumped in the government´s memory banks out in the desert. This "security" is supposed to make us safer...like the war on drugs is supposed to end that social and physical scourge.

We now find the "trusted" intel apparatus is being used against politicians by politicians. Against private citizens, too. But you have nothing to hide, do you? The Constitution will protect you, right?

Feel safe yet?

Rioting is not ´speech´.
These people should be jailed and then Berkeley won´t have to worry about ´security´.

Ann was right. Expel students who riot. Period.

If they expelled all who riot in Berkeley, California might avoid bankruptcy since nearly all students are on ´´scholarship.´´

How many of these masked people are the sons of wealthy white men, acting out their white guilt?

My guess is ~90%. If otherwise, they could always show up as a member, or an "ally" of BLM or the p#$%^-hats or somesuch.

In order to overcome the "privilege," they´re going to extremes to show they´re down with the Cause.

These are the tactics of totalitarian fascists leftists. It has been for about 100 years. Safety! Safety! "You can´t (insert reason here) because of public safety."

The fact of the matter is that they allow the violence so that they can suppress the voices of reason. If a leftist speaks, then there is hell to pay for any protesters from the right. They incite violence, then blame the victims for the incitement.

These are dangerous times for free speech and thought.

Every time the Washington political press freaks out and goes into full panic mode against President Trump, the blockbuster, Watergate-volume story always unfolds the same way. First the news starts leaking or breaking. Newsrooms from the Potomac to the Hudson become seized and fixated on every morsel of the delicious story. News flashes zing around the internet. Then it hits cable television and the press starts slinging the most salacious and scandalous accusations they can whip up, charging the president with the highest crimes imaginable. Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) said Wednesday he does not think mismanagement of the Hillary Clinton email scandal was "sufficient rationale" for President Trump to fire FBI Director James Comey. Trump fired Comey on Tuesday following a recommendation earlier in the day from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who told the president that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recommended the dismissal. A curious belief in some circles of journalism holds that if both sides are equally unhappy with your story, you’ve done a good job. I never subscribed to that approach, and thankfully, President Trump didn’t when it came to the performance of James Comey. The suddenly-former FBI boss was long cavalier about making enemies among both Democrats and Republicans, as if going rogue repeatedly proved his rectitude. On occasion it did, but Comey increasingly wore his self-righteousness on his sleeve, confident he was too big to fire. That was his fatal mistake. And it’s why Trump made the right decision to show

Several Democrats and liberal activists raised the prospect of impeachment, but most lawmakers set their sights lower, saying they wanted to at least preserve and protect the ongoing FBI probe into Trump campaign figures’ dealings with Russia. Convinced that Mr. Comey’s firing was an attempt to kneecap that probe, Democrats said they want the decision on naming an independent prosecutor stripped
