Montpelier, VT - Former Vermont U.S. Sen. James Jeffords, who in 2001 tipped control of the Senate when he quit the Republican Party to become an independent, died Monday. He was 80. Jeffords died in Washington, said Diane Derby, a former aide to Jeffords. He had been in declining health, she said. Jeffords had announced in 2005 that he would not seek a fourth term, citing his and his wife´s health problems. "I have had an enormously satisfying career, one that I would not have traded for any other," Jeffords said when he retired. "In no other job do you

RIP, Senator Jeffords. However, I remember how Pete Domenici couldn´t hold back the tears when the committee chairmanship he had waited so long to hold was ripped away in an instant. And how Trent Lott immediately disbanded the Singing Senators. Jeffords objected and Lott told him where to put his objection.

Washington Examiner (DC), by Paul Bedard    Original Article

The Northeast, once the nation’s political engine that produced presidents, House speakers and Senate giants including the late Edward M. Kennedy, is losing clout in Washington as citizens flee the high-tax region, according to experts worried about the trend. The Census Bureau reports that population growth has shifted to the South and the result is that the 11 states that make up the Northeast are being bled dry of representation in Washington. Critics blame rising taxes in states such as Massachusetts and Connecticut for limiting population growth in the Northeast to just 15 percent from 1983 to 2013, while the

DENVER — State health officials confirmed a tenth case of paralysis affecting children who have recently had respiratory infections. Medical experts made the announcement Monday at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora. Dr. Sam Dominguez says outside of the respiratory problems, there is no common link between cases. “There are no commonalities as far as where they live, schools or day cares they attend.” The hospital says before Monday, four of the children admitted tested positive for enterovirus 68, and four others for the rhinovirus (which causes the common cold). The other was not tested. The patients range in age from

WASHINGTON- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has twice won elections he was supposed to lose. If Democrats maintain control of the Senate in November, much of the credit will go to the wily Nevada Democrat. Reid is not on the ballot this year, but his position as majority leader depends on Democrats denying Republicans the net six seats they need to retake the Senate. By all accounts he is working as single-mindedly toward that goal as any of his endangered incumbents. With his stooped shoulders, monotone delivery and occasionally impolitic remarks, Reid, 74, does not shine on the campaign trail. He
