Montpelier, VT - Former Vermont U.S. Sen. James Jeffords, who in 2001 tipped control of the Senate when he quit the Republican Party to become an independent, died Monday. He was 80. Jeffords died in Washington, said Diane Derby, a former aide to Jeffords. He had been in declining health, she said. Jeffords had announced in 2005 that he would not seek a fourth term, citing his and his wife´s health problems. "I have had an enormously satisfying career, one that I would not have traded for any other," Jeffords said when he retired. "In no other job do you

RIP, Senator Jeffords. However, I remember how Pete Domenici couldn´t hold back the tears when the committee chairmanship he had waited so long to hold was ripped away in an instant. And how Trent Lott immediately disbanded the Singing Senators. Jeffords objected and Lott told him where to put his objection.

WASHINGTON — President Obama must be touched by all the concern Republicans are showing him these days. As Congress examines security breaches at the White House, even opposition lawmakers who have spent the last six years fighting his every initiative have expressed deep worry for his security. “The American people want to know: Is the president safe?” Representative Darrell Issa of California, the Republican committee chairman who has made it his mission to investigate all sorts of Obama administration missteps, solemnly intoned as he opened a hearing into the lapses on Tuesday. Dallas health officials are bracing for a possible second case of the deadly Ebola virus connected to the infected man now in isolation. Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson said there is one particular contact of the patient who he fears may have Ebola. Deadline Hollywood, self-described as “[t]he definitive choice for industry insiders,” noted that 60 Minutes ratings were “off by 69% from last Sunday, when it directly followed the game.” Meaning that an NFL game preceding 60 Minutes is responsible for the show’s typically strong ratings. Specifically, 60 Minutes had 17.9 million viewers on September 21 but only 9.7 million viewers the following week on September 28, when Steve Kroft interviewed the president. The Obama administration found itself scrambling on Tuesday to defend President Barack Obama for his lackluster 42% attendance record on daily intelligence briefings, a finding from a new report issued by the non-partisan Government Accountability Institute (GAI).
