ANN ARBOR — The University of Michigan has settled a lawsuit brought by a student libertarian club after the university spent thousands supporting leftist campus groups while denying funding to campus conservative and libertarian clubs. The university agreed to pay the U-M Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) a sum of $5,000 plus attorney fees for denying the student group funding toward an event hosted by anti-affirmative action activist Jennifer Gratz. Gratz spoke about the importance of intellectual diversity at the University last October.

Why should the IRS - - or anyone else in the Stinky administration - - pay any attention at all to these judges?

To paraphrase Uncle Joe Stalin - - how many divisions does a federal judge have?

Within the span of a few months in 1970, the short-lived film genre known as the "concert/documentary movie" reached its apogee with three releases that each marked a turning point in artistic evolution. "Let It Be" was the final major appearance of the Beatles; "Woodstock," the first big blockbuster concert movie—boasting one classic rock band after another—amounted to the zenith of the form, still yet to be surpassed. But "Elvis: That´s the Way It Is" was something else entirely: It captured the King of Rock ´n´ Roll at the very moment he was reclaiming his throne and beginning a new

A lawyer for Gov. Rick Perry said Friday he will challenge felony charges that the governor overstepped his authority when he said he would veto state funding for Travis County prosecutors if District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg would not resign her post. David Botsford, an attorney for Perry, informed Visiting Judge Bert Richardson he plans to file a writ of habeas corpus challenging the constitutionality of the laws underlying the two-count indictment against Perry. “It will speak for itself,” Botsford told reporters. He said his challenge would be based on the governor’s power to veto and his First Amendment rights. Grand jurors indicted Perry

It’s the kind of story that gets shared around the smoke pit at military bases for years. Robert Work, the deputy secretary of defense, shared a “true story” with U.S. troops while visiting Guam yesterday and it showed the spirit and ingenuity that enlisted personnel bring to the job. A retired Marine colonel, Work said that while Marines were on patrol in Afghanistan, they saw Afghan men apparently hiding improvising explosive devices. The Marines rules of engagement, however, wouldn’t allow them to attack. They had to figure out if there actually was a threat first, Work said. The Marines approached, and the

In his statement on the beheading of James Foley by devotees of the Islamic State (referred to in his statement as ISIL) yesterday, Obama spoke up on behalf of Islam: Let’s be clear about ISIL. They have rampaged across cities and villages — killing innocent, unarmed civilians in cowardly acts of violence. They abduct women and children, and subject them to torture and rape and slavery. They have murdered Muslims — both Sunni and Shia — by the thousands. The headline was brutal. “Bam’s Golf War: Prez tees off as Foley’s parents grieve,” read the cover of Thursday’s New York Daily News. Obama’s gaffe was this: He had denounced the beheading of James Foley from a vacation spot in Martha’s Vineyard, then went to the golf course. Seems like he had a great time. Such a great time that he returned to the Farm Neck Golf Club—sorry, membership is full—the next day. Technically, Obama’s vacation began on August 9. It is scheduled to end on Sunday, August 24. Does the president think the world is a TV show? One of the things you learn watching television as a kid is that the hero wins. No matter how dire things look, the star is going to be okay. MacGyver always defuses the bomb with some saltwater taffy before the timer reaches zero. There was no way Fonzie was going to mess up his water-ski jump and get devoured by sharks. Life doesn’t actually work like that. That’s one reason HBO’s Game of Thrones is so compelling. Despite being set in an absurd fantasy world of giants, dragons, and ice zombies, it’s

On Tuesday, August 19, an American citizen, James Foley, was savagely killed. The group of jihadists known as ISIL had previously killed and brutalized tens of thousands of non-Americans. But they killed Foley because he was an American. They titled the grotesque video of this particular act of barbarism “A message to America.” On Wednesday, the president of the United States of America spoke. A grand jury has convened to determine what charges, if any, will be brought against Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown earlier this month. Over at The New Republic, Yishai Schwartz argues that a conviction against Wilson is impossible because of Missouri´s self defense laws: In other states, claims of self-defense need to be proven as more likely than not, or in legal speak, to a “preponderance of the evidence.” It’s still the state’s obligation to prove “beyond a reasonable doubt” that the defendant actually killed the victim. But once that’s established, the prosecution doesn’t

The announcement comes as the administration steps up its airstrike campaign against the same militant organization -- and mulls additional American boots on the ground in Iraq. Holder, during remarks in Washington, confirmed the "open criminal investigation" into Foley´s beheading, which was recorded and posted online this week.
