The Wise Latina? I Think Not
Jewish World Review, by Alicia Colon

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 4/28/2014 8:52:52 AM

When Sonia Sotamayor, the self-proclaimed ´wise Latina´ was nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court, I was asked to write an op-ed because of our similar backgrounds. I am about ten years her senior and those ten years and the different paths we took explain the wide gulf between our political perspectives, however, I had hopes that her early years in Catholic schools would have left a deeper impression on her principles. Alas, her diatribe about the recent anti-affirmative action ruling by the court confirmed the fact that her indoctrination at Princeton and Yale as a liberal whiner was successful.

It must be difficult to see some many cultural brethren being cajoled and tricked into following a losing path in life. Perhaps some day the scales will fall from their eyes and most Latinos/Hispanics will reject the liberalism that inhibits achieving deeply-satisfying accomplishments.

Thank you so much, Alicia for the much-needed prespective on the question of Wise Latinas.

I posted the other day about Sotomayor´s dissent, which she insisted on reading from the bench. It was about 54 pages of words and a few charts and graphs [like Ross Perot, but much less edifying]. If it took her 90 second to read each page aloud, that´s darn near 90 minutes of repetitive tripe. Mind-numbing to read, it must have been painful to have to listen to.

I admire this woman a great deal as she describes how ignorant people engaged in stereotyping what she SHOULD do/be.

Sonia Sotomayor: Token Hispanic & self proclaimed brown Yoda & product of the Democrat-keep-´em-dumb-&-give-a-passing-grade policy.

Hispanics finally have one of their own on the SC & she doesn´t know how to write succinctly. Are there remedial Courses in writing for SC justices?

Fabulous article to which I relate so well. Having grown up in a Christian neighborhood during the immediacy of WWII, fear/hatred/suspicion of Jews was all about us. Although my color and face belied the stereotype of my religion, my family name couldn´t save me from the bullies and the ignorant. Yet, I managed to see through the ignorance and not blame the rest of the world for theirs. My political affiliations turned away from the race and religion baiters, whose voices have only grown louder and more strident over the years.

Again, terrific article.

Ding Ding...bases loaded round trip Dinger, a Home Run.

Alicia, thank you, does not get any clearer than your observations.

I too grew up in the same time period. We had a family of four, father a Sergeant in the Air Force and dirt poor. But I also found the classics in London, Rome, Paris, and Madrid, Spain during our base transfers in Europe.

Two trips to Vietnam, enamored by John and Bobby Kennedy, and voted for Richard Nixon.

College in California, but my heros were G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver North.

I am a Conservative but the family was Democrat, and race was never a part of my experience. You either liked someone or you didn´t associate with them.

The Sotamayor and her Limings, through a false world view have brought us to the cliff we stand in front of today.

Loved this:

I read Justice Sotomayor´s entire dissent and it was not easy plowing through endless pages citing various court decisions irrelevant to the case at hand. Why it had to be 58 pages long is an indication that her writing skills may still need to be strengthened.

This Latina wrote more wisdom in this short column at Jewish World Review than Sonia Sotamayor wrote in her entire 58 pages.

Lots of respect and admiration from here for a truly wise woman, Alicia Colon.

Hillary Clinton appeared Tuesday on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart to promote her book, "Hard Choices." Stewart briefly discussed the 656-page tome about Clinton´s tenure as secretary of state and then asked exactly what everyone is wondering. "No one cares," about the book, he said. "They just want to know if you´re running for president." Stewart, like so many, tried to get the answer -- even telling Clinton that it sounded like she had just declared that she was running. Like so many others Stewart couldn´t confirm anything, but he gets points for asking the most creative questions.

Hillary Clinton´s contract for a 2013 speech at the University of Buffalo — for which she was paid $275,000 — came with a number of limits on press access. The rumors that Rupert Murdoch was interested in purchasing Time Warner gained some shape and form Wednesday morning, as the New York Times reported that sources said Murdoch made an $80 billion offer for the TV-cable-film-magazine conglomerate, only to be rebuffed. Politicians in Germany have devised an ingenious solution to combat the threat of eavesdropping by American spies: playing classical music during their meetings. MPs who sit on the spying committee had become so concerned that US agents might listen in to their discussions that they had ordered classical music to be played, to drown out the discussions. On arrival at the meeting, The Suddetusche Zeitung reported that for "security reasons" MPs had to put their mobile phones and computers into a large metal box to ensure that they were not subjected to outside surveillance.
