Why churches should brace for
a mass exodus of the faithful

The Week, by Damon Linker

Original Article

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,

From someone who has absolutely no clue why people are drawn to the church.

Yeah, that accepting homosexual marriage and anything goes new worldism worked out well for the Episcopalians.

BeeEss! Acceptance of perversity is NOT the meek inheriting anything. Let God forgive these sinners. I want nothing to do with them or their lifestyles......

I´ve read about entire Anglican congregations (clergy and parishioners) coming into the Catholic Church for just these issues.

There are more and more evangelical ministers "coming home." There´s a support network in place to enable these non-Catholic clergymen to make the journey.

So - the mass exodus appears to be quite the opposite of this guy´s predictions. My guess he´s been reading those Pew polls and listening to Nancy Pelosi.

This entire articel is refuted by one inconvenient fact:

Islam is the world´s fastest growing religion.

And it makes NO EXCUSES for it´s rigid theology.

Christianity started with a handful of people, it can go forward with just a handful. If you can´t stand the heat get out of the kitchen and let the heat come later.

IMHO, my Christian responsibility is to be nice/civil to these people and those who embrace their lifestyle. Just as I expect them to treat me.

I actually agree that many religions today are crumbling, and not because of lack of faith by their followers, but due to the abandonment of certain founding bedrock principles by their leaders. The very premise of a religion is the setting forth of such principles and adherence to them throughout life. They aren´t "The Ten Suggestions" but instead, "The Ten Commandments."

But today, fearing unpopularity by their followers, the leaders of many churches have succumbed to social pressures an undermined the very foundations of their religions. This appeal to currently popular mores, unfortunately only pleases the most easily malleable of their followers, but repels their most faithful ones.

It´s "religicide by leaders."

Strait is the gate and narrow the way that leads to eternal life. Main stream churches keep widening the gate, but that widened gate leads to destruction.

I believe what the Bible teaches, not what some Linker thinks. Jesus Christ said I forgive you so now go and sin no more. That is the dignity he gave to all people. He did not overlook their sins.

According to the bible, as the end of the age approaches, the true church will become weaker (Rev. 3:8) while the apostate Church becomes wealthier (Rev. 3:17). There will be a great falling away from the faith (2 Thes. 2:3) as people who call themselves Christian depart from a literal belief in Scripture and gather around them teachers who will say what they want to hear. (2 Tim 4:3)

The church would be on much firmer ground if the Gospels recorded Christ explicitly stating that he chose men to be his apostles because it is God´s will that only men can serve in that role. But of course he said no such thing.

Damon must be one of those "sola scriptura" types. Even so - he should have read John 21:25:

Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

I am one of those sola scriptura guys --referred to by a previous poster.

It´s when tradition trumps God´s word, or God´s word is changed to fit the culture of the world that churches crumble.

True Christians know TRUTH. They also know BS before they step in it.

Linker is ignorant, IMHO. He imposes his modern definition of "equality" on the Catholic Church.

He seems to think that "democracy" should be embraced by the Church. I´ll never forget the words of Benjamin Martin, played by Mel Gibson, in "The Patriot":

"An elected legislature can trample a man´s rights as easily as a king can." A succinct criticism of England´s hierarchy.

And do we not see this happening today even in the United States? The Constitution was about a "natural law jurisprudence." And that is about that which IS. And that which is cannot be imposed. Reality--that which is--is not impositional. Just as we cannot impose the reality of a blue sky, we cannot impose the reality of the humanity of the unborn, the maleness of a man, the femaleness of a woman, that the genders are different yet totally equal, etc. This has been lost on modern man.

I do agree that the "churches should brace for a mass exodus of the faithful." But it is not because something has been gained, it is because something has been lost.

Come, Lord Jesus.

This author has it exactly backwards. The faithful are fleeing the liberal Protestant denominations for evangelical churches or, in some instances, the Catholic Church. Protestant churches that do not follow the Bible shouldn´t even call themselves Prostestant. Luther was very clear about the authority of scripture. And scripture says that men are to be pastors. And as someone who has hear women pastors preach, I commend the wisdom of the Bible. And the Bible also rules out gay clergy, speaking of men with one wife.

One must remember and be taught that at least one half of the people are children descendants of Cain who is the son of Satan.

John 8:43-45
King James Version (KJV)
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

Jesus has never said Christians should be subservient to evil doers and allow themselves to be trampled on by the unrighteous. That is a complete 360 degree turn from His and our Fathers teachings.

Right on the nail, O.P. The author ties the acceptance of gay marriage to Christ´s proclamation of the equal dignity of all. But what Christ refers to in that is the equal dignity of each person´s soul as a creation of God, not the equal dignity of our worldly choices and behaviors.

In no way did Jesus bless or encourage sin; He sternly warned people of the deadly consequence of sin and invited all to repentance and forgiveness. And one common theme among the shrinking churches has been the preaching of forgiveness without repentance, or even sin without consequence - both of which reduce the necessity and perceived value of participating in a faith community.

Count me as another lifelong Episcopalian whose attendance is hanging by a thread, as the church continues to chase whatever liberal will-o-the-wisp is trending at the moment.

Their eageress to trash the man/woman basis of the sacrament of marriage is particularly egregious. Have two millennia of believers been wrong all this time about what God intended, with no attempt by Moses, the prophets, or Jesus Himself to correct our error? Or has God recently changed His mind on the subject?

Churches are boats.
Buffeted by strong winds of popular opinion.
Subject to misdirection by mutiny.

Good captains focus relentlessly upon the Guide Star.
And navigate by the unbending Light.

2000 years of church history is a blink of the eye.

Many boats have run aground.
Been broken upon the rocks.

Many more will be.

It´s just the nature of the voyage.

I believe that the ´true´ church is The Body of Jesus the Christ here on earth, and He is the Head. Denominations are the work of the enemy of Christ´s church to split believers into different camps of interpretation. A Body is one whole being built with billions of parts, each one vital to all. ICorinthians 12:
12-27. As the end of this age comes to a close, The Spirit is drawing the true body out of all these denominations to finish our work here on earth. So I see the basic premise of this article as coming to pass. Believers are leaving apostate and dead churches in droves.

Why do men suppose that Christ came to earth, suffered as a man, yet lived a life of obedience to the Heavenly Father, died, arose and built His church (not churches) to provide man a means of reconciliation with God and hope for eternal salvation, only to let man live and worship as he pleases and let him into heaven regardless of what pleases the Heavenly Father?

Heaven wouldn´t be any different from earth, if men ran things - voting from time to time on what they will and will not accept as rules for the church. We can see for ourselves what a good job man has done and is doing on earth while trying to do things man´s way. What makes man think he is wise enough or capable enough to improve on the church Christ established?

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

A return to God´s inspired Word is the only thing that can unify us and guide us to our soul´s salvation.

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.

2 Timothy 3

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7 ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. 10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. [Snip] It can take up to 10 minutes for every radio, TV, cable and satellite provider to

In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country's most dangerous. School Shootings: Widely Reported Tragedies Since 2000 - Using firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and/or used in murders. John McCain, an immigration hawk. Who knew? Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Attorney General Eric Holder encouraged Americans not to forget race while working for justice and equality in their country. “As it stands, our society is not yet color blind -- nor should it be -- given the disparities that still afflict and divide us.” Holder explained, “We must be color brave, and we must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities.” Holder made his remarks during a speech at Howard University on Tuesday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil Rights Act. “We must take into account not only the

WASHINGTON — It was an enduring image of his presidency: a chastened Bill Clinton walking his dog while wife Hillary keeps her distance as the family leaves town at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal — but it was all part of a contrived public-repentance campaign, according to a new book. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
