Henry Waxman, 20-Term
Democrat, Leaving House

New York Times, by Jonathan Weisman

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 1/30/2014 11:15:33 AM

WASHINGTON — Representative Henry A. Waxman of California, a diminutive Democratic giant whose 40 years in the House produced some of the most important legislation of the era, will announce on Thursday that he is retiring at the end of the year. Mr. Waxman, 74, joins the growing list of House members who are calling it quits, many in disappointment over the partisanship and ineffectiveness of a Congress that may end up as the least productive in history. “It’s been frustrating because of the extremism of Tea Party Republicans,” Mr. Waxman said

Comments:
Blames Tea Party for his "frustration". Those pesky folks who honor the Constitution.

40 years of misery end with his retirement. Our misery.

Somehow, I have a feeling Nostrillas Waxman will find a nice retirement job with some lobbyist group.

Or on MSNBC.

Don´t let the door hit ya on the way out.

Also, I understand the GOP is throwing a retirement party to celebrate the event. Waxman´s not invited.

So am I a bad person for thinking Happy, Happy, Happy?

Plus I am wondering if the Democrat party is so sure that the public is behind them, why all the retirements? Could it be that they know that they aren´t going to be in charge anytime soon and it´s no fun not being able to ram anything they want down the countries throat.

Nostrildamus will take his $170,000 per year Congressional pension and free health care to either a US embassy for the next 3 years or to a lucrative teaching position at UCLA or Cal Berkeley.

Happy to see him go to pasture along with Bawney and others (can Pelosi be far behind?).

The problem is that those jerks in California will fill the seat with another obnoxious Lib to carry on his work of ruining the country.

When will the world recognize the power of the Tea Parties. not only do the Tea Parties elect conservatives, but they run fascist like Waxman out of the House. The power and reach of the Tea Parties is not limited to one party ad not limited to one part of the country. Fascist such as Waxman see the awesome power of the Tea Parties and so fear it that they run in panic.

Tea Party is a state of mind.

I love to hear the Liberals pizz and moan about the evil Tea Party and how it´s been ginned up by the Koch Brothers and corporate money.

Balderdash ! Only Communists require all the money and media and treachery to further their cause.

Like most criminals, they project malicious intent onto others.

Tea Party is the very definition of a ´Grass Roots´ movement.

The left knows this and really fears and hates it. As they should.

A majority of Tinseltown voters will almost certainly find a replacement for Waxman who´s just as objectionable in political habit. (What Waxman and the rest of the Left believe shouldn´t be dignified by calling it a philosophy; it´s as much a philosophy as a thousand pounder´s quotidian calorie consumption: more, more, always more.) However, finding a successor who´s as ugly and unprepossessing as the porcine Waxman will probably be impossible. Be thankful for small favors.

OK, can we please stop pretending biofuel made from corn is helping the planet and the environment? With huge subsidies for ethanol in gasoline, with all States now selling gasoline having some ethanol blend, and a general misconception that these biofuels are green, corn ethanol has taken on a $30 billion/yr life of its own. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released two of its Working Group reports at the end of last month (WGI and WGIII), and their short discussion of biofuels has ignited a fierce debate as to whether they’re of any environmental benefit at all.

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. Moreover, all around him are astonishing opportunities for him to be an historic figure -- one who could and should be the man who did more than any other single person in turning back the red tide of Obama. It’s all there for Speaker of the House, and yet John Boehner manages to miss

Global sea levels have risen by 8 inches (20cm) since 1880 and scientists predict they could rise up to 3ft (98cm) by 2100. But despite the UN’s recent threats of war, famine and extreme weather, such a dramatically different world caused by sea level rise can be hard to imagine. To help picture the future, Martin Vargic, an amateur graphic designer from Slovakia, has created a map depicting the planet with sea levels around 260ft (79m) higher than they are today. He imagines what Earth would look like if the ice sheets surrounding the North and South poles melted, releasing

Joan Eisenstodt didn´t have a stopwatch when she went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist recently, but she is certain the physician was not in the exam room with her for more than three or four minutes. "He looked up my nose, said it was inflamed, told me to see the nurse for a prescription and was gone," said the 66-year-old Washington, D.C., consultant, who was suffering from an acute sinus infection. When she started protesting the doctor´s choice of medication, "He just cut me off totally," she said. "I´ve never been in and out from a visit faster." These days,

It may not be tomorrow, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says "something will happen" to force a Nevada rancher to obey a court order to stop grazing his cattle on federal land and pay his grazing fees. "It´s obvious that you can´t just walk away from this," Reid said in an April 18 interview with a Nevada´s KSNV-TV News 3 program “What’s Your Point?” "You can´t have a law that is -- we´re a nation of laws, not of men and women," he said. (Video) Reid noted that most cattlemen pay their taxes, pay their fees, and follow

Harry Reid isn’t backing down from his claim that rancher Cliven Bundy’s supporters are “domestic terrorists.” It’s astonishing rhetoric given the White House’s characterization of the mass shooting by a genuine terrorist, Major Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 Americans at the Fort Hood Army base after yelling “Allahu Akbar!” (God is great.) Rather than labeling Hasan’s actions “domestic terrorism,” the Obama administration is prosecuting him for having committed “workplace violence.” Democratic rhetoric is become ever more desperate and overheated as we approach the November midterm elections. Last week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that GOP positions on immigration were motivated by

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of American democracy is the magnificent estate of public land that it reserved from the very beginning for the use of all citizens, rich or poor. There is nothing like it in the democracies of Europe, which came into being with nations already carved up into private fiefdoms. The Great Idea that hundreds of millions of acres of forests, deserts, rivers and prairies should be owned by, and managed for, the public interest has had a profound and lasting influence on American culture. But not everyone has accepted it. Cliven Bundy’s armed standoff with the National Park

At a petite 5’3’’, Sage Santangelo may not look like a combat fighter at first glance. But the female second lieutenant has never let that hold her back from pursuing her dream of becoming an infantry officer in the Marine Corps. Growing up, Santangelo found she was always able to keep up with the guys and enjoyed playing hockey on all boys’ teams. But when she joined the Marines, Santangelo found the playing field changed; she was segregated into female-only training units and as a woman, was relegated to less strenuous physical training than her male counterparts. And that’s why,
