Power play: Federal ruling
forbids states from checking
voters’ citizenship

Washington Times (D.C), by Stephen Dinan

A federal commission rejected three states’ requests to ask voters for proof of citizenship, issuing a complex decision Friday that said it’s up to the national government, not the states, to decide what to include on registration forms. Under the motor-voter law, federal officials distribute voter-registration forms in all of the states. Arizona, Kansas and Georgia all asked that those forms request proof of citizenship, but the federal Election Assistance Commission rejected that in a 46-page ruling. The EAC said states can check driver’s license databases or ask federal immigration authorities for information, but they cannot tell the federal government

If both political parties were on the up and up you would think that basic common sense would dictate that Congress would quickly amend the so-called "motor-voter" law to include a verification of US citizenship process on voter registration forms. Especially since it is widely known that there are up to 20 million illegal aliens now in the US who could fraudulently register to vote and upend US national elections.

FTA: Critics argue that requirement is too burdensome, particularly on naturalized citizens, and would keep some eligible voters from casting ballots.

Voting is a right of citizens. If you can´t demonstrate your citizenship, you shouldn´t vote. The naturalized citizens I know worked hard to get in and would be delighted to show their documents.

This is 180 degrees wrong! States are sovereign and decide their own rules, if voting rules are to onerous then a COURT may decide they are unconstitutional. These states need to tell this COMMISSION where to go and write their own rules, that or send the US Army to keep these rebels in line!

#11 is exactly right. In a republic, the states have the jurisdiction to determine the qualifications for voting in their elections. The federal government has overstepped its authority in such matters and the states need to challenge it in court.

And as a naturalized citizen myself, neither I nor any other naturalized citizens I know have any issue whatsoever with proving our hard-earned and very much valued citizenship. In fact, we continue to be amazed that our fellow citizens don´t demand the enforcement of such validation.

Don´t see anything there about some unelected commission or some court having the authority to alter state election regulations.

This is an illegal act and ill be overturned by SCOTUS.
Only Congress can change the voting laws per Article 1, Section 4 of the Constitution. And Congress has not delegated this authority to this EAC commission, which no one ever heard of, and whose commissioners are political appointees.
I do believe the states should just ignore this ruling, and advise EAC that thy will enforce voter eligibility with state police. Let Holder call in his DOJ desk jockeys

Where is the Republican Establishment fighting for the sanctity of each and every citizens right to a fair and equal vote paired with a uncorrupted process for it to be counted in?

Seriously, some state Romney was cheated out of become president because of voter fraud. Did the Republican Establishment do anything? Did they take to the streets to demand an investigation? Did they threaten to walk out because the process was corrupted? Demand justice? Even whimper a little swear word under their breath?

Well?
Anyone?

Even more curious is that whether or not the Republican Establishment wins or loses and election cycle or how much of the government it controls or doesn´t control it never can get anything done? Yet, the exact opposite is true for the democrat party.

Ponder that.

Just a minor correction. Voting isn´t a right, it is a priveledge.

Other than that, the only time you will hear a Dem complain about this ruling is if the GOP were to mimick their tactics in the upcoming elections, and magically find thousands of ballots stuffed in car trunks and cardboard boxes that were ´forgotten´ about and mysteriously ´found again´.

Then, and only then, if a GOP candidate actually wins the magic election by overstuffing by 115% instead of 110%, will a Dem cry foul. Until then, 110% precinct votes are totally cool, and legitimate.

As long as it is in their favor...

The context for this little chestnut of racial nastiness was a heated floor debate in the Illinois legislature over a proposed education reform bill. The fireworks started when Democratic Representative Linda Chapa LaVia, who is Hispanic, delivered a speech criticizing charter schools. Ms. Chapa LaVia was no doubt casting aspersions on behalf of teachers unions — who’ve contributed heavily to her campaigns, are bankrupting the state, and don’t much care for competition. How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally
