NEW YORK- Three new breeds, Chinooks, Portuguese Podengo Pequenos and Rat Terriers, will be vying to be top dog at the 138th Westminster Kennel Club in New York in February, organizers said on Thursday. The two-day show on February 10 and 11 at Madison Square Garden and Piers 92 and 94 will open with a separate agility competition in which mixed-breed dogs will be allowed to compete for the first time in more than 100 years. About 2,845 dogs, the most in more than two decades, will be featured in the show, the second longest continuously held sporting event in the United

I´m surprised they are just now recognizing Rat Terriers. They´ve been around forever. Someone I know calls them a ´Taf Tar´, which is Fat Rat spelled backwards.

Westminster is always the highlight of my February. In our household, we anticipate and get ready for Westminster like most folks get ready for the Super Bowl.

"separate agility competition in which mixed-breed dogs will be allowed to compete for the first time in more than 100 years."

Sounds like push back coming from somewhere about the Westminster Fashion show.

Agility is a highlevel measure of "good citizen" dog. Dog works at the handler´s commands. Some if it is stunning.

Dog bites (on people) a surging, at least the costs are surging. In many states Pit Bulls (and aabout half a dozen other breeds) are not covered under standard Homeowner´s insurance. Westminster trying to turn the corner on the bad publicity.

I used to love the Westminster Dog Show, but no more. The breed standards have, in my opinion, ruined several breeds most notably the magnificent German Shepard. The poor dog has such a sloping back, it´s behind drags the ground.

Give me an agile and healthy mutt any day.

I agree with 4, completely ruined the most beautiful German Shepard And the judges always pick a dog I don´t think should have won...but then I am not a dog expert...but still love watching and hearing the comments about each breed of dog.

Study the beautiful coats on Yorkies and Maltese compared to short haired breeds. Watch their gait. Yes, they are small, but they are beautiful dogs.

The AKC- breeding the brains out of dogs for over 100 years. To quote wikipedia "In the early 1800s the English became concerned with the beauty of dogs rather than their function. This fad spread to North America, and in 1877 the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show began".

We have always had mutts, mostly rescues. The only purebred, AKC registered, was a miniature Dachsie, sweet, loving, but absolutely unreliable with her house manners. My vet advised that she was incurably neurotic. We loved her anyway, but I never left her to roam the house when I was gone or during the night. Give me a mutt anyday. No more registered weirdos ever again.

My favorite dog is still the Border Collie, followed closely by the German Shepherd. I am sorry to hear about the bad breeding practices. My aunt and uncle kept German Shepherds, but one was a true stand out, a handsome, proud, brave and loyal dog. RIP Rebel.

Paul Ryan has laid down another marker. Pity he doesn’t have the power to lay down the law. Representative Ryan has a budget, and the Democrats do not have one, nor do they plan to produce one. The proverb holds that you can’t beat something with nothing, but that is precisely what congressional Democrats are going to do with this Republican budget, just as they have with earlier iterations of the same concept. Representative Ryan finds himself in much the same position as Senator Rand Paul: ready to lead, a bit short on followers. My recent pessimistic assessment of Senator Rand Paul’s

George Soros’ South American ex-squeeze can sue him for alleged assault and battery stemming from a bedroom brawl in 2010, the Appellate Division ruled Tuesday, upholding part of a lower court´s decision. But the panel tossed Adriana Ferreyr’s attempt to go after the billionaire hedge fund manager for infliction of emotional distress, a part of her suit that had previously been upheld by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Debra James. The whole point of Obamacare, supposedly, was to insure the uninsured and bend the cost curve down. Those who had insurance were supposed to be able to keep it. Families were supposed to start saving about $2500 a year. If you believed the Obama administration.
