Terrorism´ Is Poverty

Weekly Standard, by Jeryl Bier

Secretary of State John Kerry covered a broad range of topics with his counterpart Pietro Parolin at the Vatican in Rome on Monday. Besides Syria, the Middle East peace process, Sudan, and Cuba, the subject of poverty came up during their discussions. In remarks following the meeting, Kerry linked poverty not only to terrorism, but to the "disenfranchisement of millions" [emphasis added]: We talked about the common interest of Pope Francis and President Obama in addressing poverty and extreme poverty on a global basis. The United States of America is deeply involved in efforts in Africa and in other parts of the

Bin Laden comes from a very wealthy family and most of the 9/11 hijackers were well off. It´s not poverty that is the root cause of terrorism, it´s hatred.

John: Osama Bin Laden was a billionaire from a family of billionaires.

Most of the 9/11 hijackers were highly educated and at least middle class if not upper class.

Kerry is playing stupid because terrorism is merely one of the tools in the Fellow Traveler toolbox. Another one is antiwar protests. Kerry has his own star in a museum in North Vietnam for his contribution to the North´s victory. Of course other fellow travelers combined anarchy with war protests like Bill Ayers. The old school terrorists like Yasser Arafat were funded by Russia as low cost answer to US influence in the Middle East. Ditto the Muslim Brotherhood.

I recall he and Mrs. Kerry own quite a few homes, multiple cars, an airplane ... and no doubt quite a few household help

Perhaps John would open up those extra homes for some poor people, give away his extra cars. Perhaps even sell his boat and give the money to the poor.

How did those 9/11 terrorists afford to take flight lessons?

Who buys them their guns? (I forgot, Obama does that

What do the terrorists hope to accomplish by killing other poor people in Africa, Syria, Egype, etc., who happen to be of another religion? Is that going to cure their poverty?

Why do they torch and bomb churches? Why do they burn/bomb schools that educate girls?

As we know, there is no such thing as a “root cause” – except, ultimately the creation of the Universe. Intelligent persons prefer to discuss “proximate cause”. This would disinclude Mr. Kerry, of course – and other foreign policy geniuses like John McCain, and large current majorities of both political parties.
But assuming arguendo that hatred of America were indeed an interim cause of terrorism, what in turn causes this hatred?
Obviously, propaganda (i.e., what is often called “Islamofascism”) is a necessary element, but is it a sufficient element? To explain, the theory is that Arab radicallists are able to convince youngsters to blow themselves up by convincing them that they will receive multiple virgins in Heaven – but human nature requires that a “carrot” must be accompanied by a “stick”, and specifically something that is credibly perceivable as a grievance of some kind, some sort of plausible “injustice”.
Accordingly, perhaps the ammunition used to generate this hatred for America (right or wrong) might be influenced by America’s actions -- and specifically, America’s telling other countries what form of government they must have, “backing” one faction against another, deciding on how other countries must compensate their own citizens, and other items that are none of our business, etc.

But, a more proximal cause of America’s actions, that in turn has prompted this “terrorism”, has likely been the actions and words of the “social justice” types in America who see America’s role in the World as being the Keeper of the Keys of all Universal Justice – which often actually means keeping the key to oil spigot turned on. For this, these persons have concluded that it is “worth it” to send, not themselves, but others (i.e., American children), to foreign countries to become cannon fodder.

So, let’s try something – let’s do our own fracking, produce our own energy, never buy anything from the Arabs again, and attempt to refrain from this pseudo-“good feeling” of sticking our national nose into other peoples’ business. Let’s then see how much terrorism is prevent by this approach. George Washington would be so proud.

This is the next "logical" branch to the liberal premise that crime is caused by poverty, if people were not poor, they would be perfect angels. Would it not follow that wealth brings morality? What? Oh yeah, rich people are evil, greedy, and heartless. Their various and diametrical opposing assertions give me a headache. The bottom line is that the solution to every problem is to take our money and give it to people behaving badly, or politicians (but I repeat myself).

Terrorism is ideological and tactical. It has nothing to do with wanting to overcome poverty. It has everything to do with forcing others to bend to the terrorists´ will in order to avoid more terrorist acts. That is true whether the goal is the establishment of an Islamic caliphate or shutting down an abortion clinic.

If terrorist are upset because they are poor and presumably want to acquire wealth so they can enjoy it then why does the leadership insist on locating their headquarters in an Afghan cave or a hovel in Pakistan?

If its about money rather than actual commitment the terrorist leadership would act more like - you know - Michelle and Barrack.

Yes. I agree that propagandistic claims are being pushed, asserting that America is oppressing Muslims instead of rescuing them.

Such hateful deceptions are being used by enemies of freedom, both foreign and domestic. Those lies certainly add to the terrorism, and might be the *entire* cause of it. Poverty is not a cause.

If anything, Islamic terrorism is a cause of poverty!

And I agree with you 100% on the goal of fracking and energy independence for the U.S.!

He’s been hammered for going around Congress with executive orders. But he’s within his authority—and he should go further on voting and transparency to make government work better. With Congress paralyzed, President Obama has promised to use his “pen and phone” to overcome the ongoing dysfunction and get some work done. And the White House has already acted several times to help improve America’s economy. But such policies, no matter how valuable, will achieve little if we do not fix our broken democracy. Allow me to suggest some ideas for how the president can do just that. First, some historical context. Presidents have

Here is a selection of highlights from Friday’s release of documents from the Clinton presidency. The cache is part of a total of about 33,000 pages of presidential records that had been held back from various public records releases because of legal reasons exempting them from disclosure. A Clinton administration memo (page 674) shows a White House that was acutely aware of the first lady’s image problems as officials contemplated how to soften perceptions of Hillary Clinton and how to “build, energize and expand” her natural base. The latest cache of previously withheld Clinton documents includes an expansive, nine-page memo that

They say it´s the sincerest form of flattery. We used the same gag in October, though ObamaCare supporters were the butt of our joke. The GOP has been hijacked. That’s right, hijacked. Over the past 100 years, an elite progressive minority has taken the Republican Party far afield from its conservative platform and the interests and values of its grassroots conservative base. I’ll admit that, in the aftermath of the disappointments of the 2012 elections, conservatives like me are angry. We are angry at being blamed for Mitt Romney’s defeat, when we argued from the beginning that he was a Big Government establishment politician and that if he ran a content-free campaign, he would lose. We are angry at the disrespect shown to limited-government constitutional conservatives

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

I live in Las Vegas. I live and breath Nevada politics. Something is very wrong. Something smells rotten in the Nevada desert. And Senator Harry Reid’s fingerprints are all over it. I am of course referring to the Bundy Ranch siege. This was a dispute between a Nevada ranching family with rights to the land in question for 140 years and the BLM (Bureayu of Land Management). The government claims they haven’t paid grazing fees for 20 years. The result was a government assault on the ranch- including snipers with assault rifles, SUV’s, helicopters, airplanes and over 200 heavily armed troops. No

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote in her forthcoming book that she was “hurt” and “angry” by 2012 reporting on her fraudulent claim to Native American heritage. “What really threw me, though, were the constant attacks from the other side,” Warren wrote in her book “A Fighting Chance.” “I would almost persuade myself that I was starting to get the hang of full-throttle campaigning and then — bam! Out of left field, the state Republican Party, or the Brown campaign, or some blogger, would launch a rocket at me,” Warren wrote, adding, ”I was stunned by the attacks.” This reporter (blogger?) reported extensively

WASHINGTON — Former President Jimmy Carter joined fellow Nobel laureates Wednesday in opposing Keystone XL, insisting that approving the pipeline would trigger “more climate upheaval” around the globe. In an open letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: “Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy.” The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

First, the good news: We are close enough to the end of the Obama presidency for his crowd to talk about a presidential library. Now, the bad news: Obama´s retirement is still 1,008 days distant. Plenty of time though to round up the dough to build it somewhere. Figure they need Solyndra-style money, at least $500 million. The last two presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush -- built their legacy edifices totally with private money. [Snip] However, Obama supporters have a different take. They think taxpayers should put up $100 million in public money for Obama´s library.
