She may be a highly-paid actress, but she still enjoys saving a few dollars - or, in this case, pounds.Emmy Rossum, the star of Showtime´s Shameless, has marvelled at the ´amazing´ and ´free health care´ she received in Britain.Speaking as a guest on Wednesday night´s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the 27-year-old told how on a recent visit to the UK she suffered a nasty bout of food poisoning.

Comments:

How many of us have rushed to a hospital due to food poisoning??

According to her IMDb bio, she obtained her high school diploma online via a Stanford University program. Yet another one of those to whom far too much in life is "amazing."

I´m sure that if she was Emmy Rossum - Fry Cook instead of Emmy Rossum - Actress for Showtime, the story might be a skootch different.

My son just got back from a trip to London and we verified how our insurance worked and where he could go in-network in case of illness. At no point did anybody make us think seeing a doctor or going to the hospital in London would be free. She got special treatment and she´s too stupid to know it.

Emmy is obviously Not.Too.Bright.

Someone paid for your amazing, awesome, (whatever), treatment. It was not free.

This will not endear you to the average Brit taxpayer who supports the system yet has to wait eons for treatment.

By accepting free stuff from the long-suffering UK taxpayer - the actress was just ´staying in character´. She plays the eldest daughter in a shamelessly shiftless, welfare-seeking family - in Chicago (I think). Ironically, her series is a spinoff of the UK series by the same name. In both series, the taxpayer takes it in the neck.

The NHS will give tourists emergency care without asking for payment but after that they want your Visa or American Express card. I had a friend who was hit by a car in London and was hospitalized for over a month. He wrote an interesting account of the care he received. He thought the level of care was acceptable but there were no private rooms (at least for him) and he was in a ward with 12 beds. A lot of the nurses were completely unskilled and some of the doctors could barely speak English.

He also said that after initial emergency care he was told in no uncertain terms that they wanted to be paid. This ditz is completely ignorant about the NHS.

My first trip to England and I came down with a UT infection. I was horrified, not just at the inconvenience and timing but at the thought having to deal with the British medical system. Emergency rooms are NOT favorite places of mine, having had a bad experience long ago when I had stomach issues right after giving birth. So I avoid emergency rooms like the plague anyway. But I had to find someplace to go. I was not a happy camper!

We lucked out in finding a private clinic near to where I was staying and they were very nice. I never said anything but I was really surprised - I was expecting to have to go through the horrors of institutional NHS just to get some flippin antibiotics for something as minor as a UT infection.

Thats not to say I was impressed with the SYSTEM - as pointed out, Id heard enough about the NHS to feel a kind of desperation. Did I want to find myself stuck in a room in some strange hospital in a country that I only enough time to see bits and pieces of in the first place?

The same thing would happen here in the USA if a foreigner showed up at an emergency room with suspected food poisoning. They would have treated her, no matter if she did not have insurance. A few days later she could have got on an airplane and gone foreign without ever paying a dime for that healthcare. That happens all the time and there is a federal law that requires the emergency rooms to provide healthcare to all comers, US citizens and foreigners, who show up.

In the UK, the taxpayers there pay for the National Health Service, maybe they don´t pay the particular hospital that gives them healthcare but they are paying in other ways because there is no "free" lunch.

#8 is correct. No private or semi-private rooms unless the patient pays for them. 12-bed wards are a treat--some wards contain many more patients than that.

A friend living in London gave birth in a ward--in front of everyone else (13 other women in various stages of labor, I believe). She said whichever doc, nurse, scrubwoman or chimney sweep happened by would catch the baby upon its entrance into the world. Delightful. This was in 1990, I believe, and she thought it was great because it was free. She is both stupid and liberal. I told her I paid only 10% of the total $13,000 bill for my son´s birth (incl prenatal and c-section). She is still horrified--I enjoyed my healthy baby and my private room, thanks. Worth every penny.

Americans for Prosperity, a group co-founded by the conservative billionaires, has already dropped $8.2 million on TV, radio and digital ads in an effort to defeat the North Carolina Democrat. According to sources tracking media buys, the group has so far spent more in North Carolina than all Democratic outside groups in every Senate race in the country — combined.

Richmond, Va. — A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld a 2012 court ruling that North Carolina´s decision to issue special anti-abortion license plates is unconstitutional because the state doesn´t offer similar plates supporting abortion rights. In a unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the proposed "Choose Life" plates represent "blatant viewpoint discrimination squarely at odds with the First Amendment. "The decision upholds a December 2012 ruling by U.S. District Judge James Fox in Raleigh, which came 13 months after he blocked the state from issuing the plates while a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union was pending.

There´s no doubt the vast majority of Republicans in Congress would repeal Obamacare if they could. Most GOP "alternative" bills begin with a clause to repeal the Affordable Care Act before proceeding to outline new policies to put in its place. Of course, GOP lawmakers don´t have any hope of actually repealing the law as long as Barack Obama, and his veto pen, are in the White House. Now some Republicans are looking at what might be done to undo as much as possible of the Democrats´ national health care scheme without actually repealing it. Some Arizonans who secured health coverage through the federal marketplace are now finding that their new plans drastically limit the providers they can use. Metro Phoenix and Tucson residents who signed up for plans with so-called narrow networks have discovered fewer options for primary-care doctors, specialists, hospitals, pharmacies, labs and clinics. And some rural Arizonans purchasing the least-expensive plan in their communities have discovered that the nearest participating doctor is 200 miles away. Insurers and brokers acknowledge that some consumers are confused by the narrow networks, a strategy health insurers embrace to lower costs.

It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere.
