In Rocky Point, not enough
whitewash for a helicopter gunship

Arizona Daily Star [Phoenix,AZ], by Tim Steller

When Mexico’s drug-war violence surged in the middle of the last decade, Rocky Point was in a building boom, and the tourist industry assured us the beach town remained tranquilo. It was — for a while. Then, around 2007, the narcos made Rocky Point a home base, but still the local promoters insisted things were OK, because the criminals and cops took care of any conflicts outside town. After that, occasional gunfights and drug-war executions started cropping up in Puerto Peñasco,(snip)On Wednesday, Mexican military helicopter gunships fired into a resort, exchanging heavy-weapons fire with narcos who had retreated into a

Had a business associate who took his family and friends down there for years, to spend winters out of the cold. I told them they were insane to visit, much less stay there. Sometimes the womenfolks driving down there alone.

Always they said the same thing" Oh, it is perfectly safe for tourists and American part-time residents

Finally he saw the light and sold his condo and other holdings down there.

Witness the STOOPID that got us Obamacare.

It´s a freaking war zone and yes American´s have died there, but so far nobody ´important´ enough for the press to care. Only a fool would take his family there, and yes it is ´safe´ in the definition of ´safe´ being that the odds are you won´t be the one who gets killed because are so many there.

But Mexico is coming apart (again) and meanwhile the band keeps playing, the deck chairs are re-arranged, as it slowly sinks beneath the waves.

Just imagine how bad things will get in the southern states when the revolution breaks out big time. Because this isn´t just ´drug dealers´ and hasn´t been for a long time.

My wife and I learned the hard way not to give credence to the pollyanna ex-pats who are constantly justifying their decision to live in Mexico by comparing the crime rates to some barrio in the USA. (I think many are just trying to peddle their investments). I live cheaper and safer in the USA, where I leave the keys in the car and leave the doors to the shop and house open. Back to mexico, no way Jose´.

Back in the 90´s, this was a great place for folks in Phoenix to visit. $1 for empanandas or Tecates from vendors walking on the beach.

It was always a bit sleazy, but not unsafe. Sad to hear that things have deteriorated so much.

Fifteen years ago Rocky Point was a wonderful place to enjoy the sun, surf, sand, and fresh shrimp!

In fact, we owned a condo on Sandy Beach from April 2002 until May 2007 when we were fortunate to get out while the getting was good ... before the Mexican real estate market collapse, and the drug cartels moved in.

Now the once beautiful pristine beach is lined with the rusting steel skeletons of unfinished mega condo complexes, and the sand is littered with glass, cigarette butts, and used condoms.

What has happened to this former little fishing village is nothing short of a tragedy for its good citizens who wanted nothing more than the opportunity to work hard in order to provide a better future for their families.

How bad is this problem? Bad enough that I will not use interstate 10. The lawlessness is that far north and still moving. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away.

The most decadent Beltway publication yet conceived, Washingtonian, has outdone itself with its latest celebration of what life is like inside the city fueled by your forcibly confiscated money. The publication recently ran with a profile of White House Press Sec. Jay Carney‘s wife, ABC News personality and working mom Claire Shipman. Carney’s two beautiful children are also profiled in the piece, but the profile itself is largely irrelevant. What is worthy of dissection are the three featured images that add value to the profile. And by “value,” we mean guffaws galore.

The chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs said Wednesday that dozens of VA hospital patients in Phoenix may have died while awaiting medical care. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., said staff investigators also have evidence that the Phoenix VA Health Care System keeps two sets of records to conceal prolonged waits that patients must endure for doctor appointments and treatment. "It appears as though there could be as many as 40 veterans whose deaths could be related to delays in care," Miller announced to a stunned audience during a committee hearing Wednesday. A once-prominent socialite was found guilty Tuesday in the 1996 Tucson car bomb killing of her ex-husband after spending years abroad living a lavish lifestyle across Europe. Pamela Phillips, 56, had pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. During the trial that began in February, Phillips´ lawyers told jurors their client had nothing to gain from the death of businessman Gary Triano and that she was the victim of overzealous authorities who failed to follow other leads. They said Phillips was already a successful real estate broker with her own money, and suggested that Triano had

President Obama will host two events on the economy this week as Democrats seek to pivot the political discussion away from the healthcare law. Democrats dispute that that the healthcare law will be a liability for the party in this year’s elections, and celebrated the news last week that ObamaCare enrollments topped 7 million. Still, they argue that jobs and the economy will be the central battleground in November. “That’s the debate that the election will be about, jobs and the budget,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said last week. Republican megadonors wouldn’t flood elections with private money if federal law forced individuals to immediately disclose their gifts, not only in public records but in advertisements too, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday. “The Chamber of Commerce told us that if their members had to disclose, they wouldn’t give to these secret PACs,” Pelosi said. Pelosi’s comments come as House Democrats plan to aggressively push for campaign finance reforms after the Supreme Court decision on Wednesday to eliminate caps on the total amount of money an individual can give to candidates, party committees and PACs.

A rapid shift to wind and solar power is needed if the world is to avoid catastrophic global warming, the United Nations warns in a crucial report today. Emissions of greenhouse gases need to be cut by up to 70 per cent before 2050 to control climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says. ‘Large-scale changes in energy systems’ are required, with coal power stations to be switched off and replaced by wind and solar. And the transformation needs to be made in the next 15 years or controlling climate change will become increasingly harder and more expensive. The report was published

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Republican Party stripped opposition to abortion and gay marriage from its platform Saturday as state convention delegates instead focused on judging fellow Republicans on their worthiness to serve in office and adherence to GOP values. The platform, with few changes, was adopted overwhelmingly as the Las Vegas convention stretched late into the evening. The vote mirrors that of the Clark County GOP, which voted earlier to remove platform language defining marriage as between a man and a woman and statements opposing abortion.
