How to discuss racial
issues on Mlive without
violating community rules

Michigan Live News, by Jen Eyer

Original Article

When moderating comments on racial issues, we strive to balance our desire to allow people to discuss important problems in their communities with the equally strong desire to not give people a platform to promote hate or inflame racial tensions. This is a difficult balance to achieve, and it requires a lot of communication with commenters to define the boundaries. As with other hot button topics like abortion and same-sex marriage, we tend to see the same problems occur repeatedly in the comments. I´m outlining them here to serve as a reference on future stories.1. Overt racism. This should go without saying,

Comments:
They don´t want commenters asking why there is no White History Month, and #7 forbids posting FBI crime statistics. Because the news media has to give proper context.

In other words, any criticism of persons of color, even to use actual statistics, real world examples and reality based comparisons are racist and forbidden.
What a load of PC baloney.

I guessed that Jen is product of either E Lansing or Ann Arbor. Then I googled her and it´s the latter. That was easy.

I wonder if these same rules apply when discussing corporate or systemic racism, where it seems that disparate impact is enough to prove it. I wonder if Mlive would be careful to include other possible factors, like education, speaking ability, work record, dress, etc. I´m guessing not so much, but then again I may have just broken the false equivalence rule (#5).

The most galling is #6. We just "assume" that the editor´s judgement is justified in withholding racial background? Really? Has this person bothered to look at the ´Omertà´ wall of silence that the MSM has imposed? At how many white victims and potential victims of theKnockout game would be safe and uninjured but for this PC?

In response to rule #6 the two most immediately noticeable physical attributes of any individual are Sex followed by Race. What the individual is wearing and what color their hair is rank a very distant third fourth fifth etc. Using the authors "logic" a suspects sex should only be mentioned if "the inclusion of a suspect´s racial (gender) description is a matter of judgment, based on factors such as whether the public is immediately at risk, and whether a complete enough description is available to effectively narrow down the pool of suspects" (what exactly does that even mean?).

In Crime story´s the suspects sex is NEVER omitted, so why is race?

5. False equivalence: This refers to a situation where on the surface there seems to be a logical and apparent equivalence, but when in fact there is none.
Here´s an oft-used example: "Why is there no White History Month?"

This has been my question since Black History month was installed as a special month.

I am so glad to have moved out of Michigan and no longer have to put up with this elitist balderdash - mainly coming from the People´s Republic of Ann Arbor. The Western side of Michigan and Northern Michigan are what I call real people, but the Univ. of Mich. has attracted liberals who think they should be in control of everyone´s life. Of course they are all too good to go live in downtown Detroit and help it to recover.

Just to make sure I was using balderdash correctly - I really wanted to use b.s. spelled out - so I looked it up:
bal·der·dash [bawl-der-dash] noun
1.senseless, stupid, or exaggerated talk or writing; nonsense.
2.Obsolete . a muddled mixture of liquors.

President Obama shifts

President Obama will host two events on the economy this week as Democrats seek to pivot the political discussion away from the healthcare law. Democrats dispute that that the healthcare law will be a liability for the party in this year’s elections, and celebrated the news last week that ObamaCare enrollments topped 7 million. Still, they argue that jobs and the economy will be the central battleground in November. “That’s the debate that the election will be about, jobs and the budget,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said last week. Nancy Pelosi pushes campaign finance reform

Republican megadonors wouldn’t flood elections with private money if federal law forced individuals to immediately disclose their gifts, not only in public records but in advertisements too, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday. “The Chamber of Commerce told us that if their members had to disclose, they wouldn’t give to these secret PACs,” Pelosi said. Pelosi’s comments come as House Democrats plan to aggressively push for campaign finance reforms after the Supreme Court decision on Wednesday to eliminate caps on the total amount of money an individual can give to candidates, party committees and PACs.

Big changes could be just down the road for North Carolina drivers. A proposal is in the works that would change the state tax system to charge drivers by the mile, instead of at the gas pump. The proposal would be to charge a half cent per mile for cars, which would generate almost $500 million in annual state revenue. A driver who travelled 15,000 miles in a year would pay about $75. "Basically you pay per the mile. It´s treating transportation as a utility, much like your water and sewer," said Larry Goode, with the Institute of Transportation Research and

Sharyl Attkisson hasn’t landed yet, but there’s every reason to suppose she’s not going to finish her career in local news in Duluth. For starters, Atkinson is an accomplished reporter. But she’s also taken one of the surefire moves to help ensure her relevance – not to mention potential TV and book contracts – by criticizing the very media establishment in which she spent her career. It’s an increasingly well-traveled path: Over the course of the past two decades, a handful of journalists have left mainstream media jobs while decrying what they saw as an inherent bias in their own industry.

Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters. A recent Gallup poll showed seniors have become even more Republican over the last two decades; in 2013, 48 percent considered themselves Republican.
