Dial 00000000 for Armageddon. US’s top

For nearly 20 years, the secret code to authorize launching U.S. nuclear missiles, and starting World War III, was terrifyingly simple and even noted down on a checklist. From 1962, when John F Kennedy instituted PAL encoding on nuclear weapons, until 1977, the combination to fire the devastating missiles at the height of the Cold War was just 00000000. This was chosen by Strategic Air Command in an effort to make the weapons as quick and as easy to launch as possible, as reported by Today I Found Out. The Permissive Action Link (PAL) is a security device for nuclear weapons that it

The code may have been simple, but it served it´s purpose, in that it never had to be used.

Just as valid as any other. Heck every number would have something that could be tied to it and then we´d be hearing about how someone was dissed because the code was their birthday or something.

At Salon.com two old-school leftists, Thomas Frank and Adolph Reed Jr., offer a surprisingly interesting critique of the contemporary left and President Obama. Notwithstanding the unwieldy headline, "We Are All Right-Wingers Now: How Fox News, Ineffective Liberals, Corporate Dems and GOP Money Captured Everything," parts of the critique--though to be sure, only parts of it--could easily have come from conservative critics. The format is an interview, with Frank (best known as author of "What´s the Matter With Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America") asking the questions and Reed (a University of Pennsylvania political scientist) answering them. But it´s really

An Iranian businessman known only as Mr Ali is understood to have booked the tickets for the two passengers using the stolen passports of the missing Malaysian Airlines plane, it has emerged. Authorities had today still found no trace of the missing plane despite searches by ships from six navies and dozens of military aircraft. A Thai travel agent who arranged the tickets for the two passengers has now said she had booked them on the flight via Beijing because they were the cheapest tickets, it has been reported. The travel agent in the resort of Pattaya said an Iranian business contact she

Sarah Palin is being wooed by two news media veterans to join a streaming network, The Post has learned. Jonathan Klein, who ran CNN’s US operations, and Jeff Gaspin, who was most recently chairman of NBC-Universal Entertainment, have already raised enough money from deep-pocketed backers to start the over-the-top network, and have reached out to a few bold-faced names to host a show to make selling subscriptions easier, sources said. And is the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice-presidential candidate among those the two have approached? You betcha, sources said. Palin seemed interested but has not committed, sources added. While the search for the missing Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines flight continues, the mystery surrounding the two passengers who used stolen passports to board flight MH370 intensifies. The Financial Times exclusively reported that the Thai travel agency that booked the tickets for the men had been asked to by an Iranian middleman. It is fairly common for fraudulent documents to be used on regional flights for illegal immigration or drug smuggling but the fact that the aircraft has disappeared has triggered speculation of a terrorist attack. The two, who were of "non-Asian appearance", despite earlier reports, were travelling from Kuala Lumpur, one on an

ROME - Interpol is investigating more suspect passports used to board a missing Malaysia Airlines flight, in addition to two European ones that were falsely used by unidentified passengers, the global police agency said on Sunday. An Italian man and an Austrian man were falsely listed as passengers on Beijing-bound flight MH370, which disappeared after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur early on Saturday with 239 people aboard. Authorities later confirmed the two men - Austrian Christian Kozel and Italian Luigi Maraldi - were not on the plane, and their passports had been stolen in Thailand within the last two years. WASHINGTON — As conservative activist groups stirred up trouble for establishment Republican Senate candidates in 2010 and 2012, party leaders in Washington first tried to ignore the insurgents, then tried to reason with them, and ultimately left it to primary voters to settle the matter. But after several of those conservatives — in Nevada, Colorado and Delaware in 2010 and in Indiana and Missouri in 2012 — managed to win their primaries but lose in the general election, party leaders felt stung by what they saw as avoidable defeats. This election season, Republicans led by Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky are taking

Sarah Palin gave the keynote speech that ended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and didn´t disappoint her fans. She railed against Obama and the Democrats. She praised Ted Cruz, coming near an endorsement for his presidential candidacy. But she left some of her biggest bombs for GOP establishment politicians who she accused of joining "the lapdogs in the lame-stream to trash the foot soldiers who fought for America.” The Hill: Last year something did happen. The awaking began and Sen. Ted Cruz helped keep them awake. His filibuster, it worked in waking people up to the folly of a government takeover over another

Sarah Palin’s speech closing the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference was enjoyable in large part because there was so little at stake. Having resigned an executive office midway through her term, the former governor of Alaska is well and truly retired from retail politics — a status reflected in the CPAC straw poll [pdf], in which Palin garnered only 2 percent of the vote. Among presidential hopefuls and prospects, the straw poll delivered wins for Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who took first place with 31 percent, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who placed with 11 percent; and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, a

The theme of Michael Tanner at the National Review is that the Tea Party has become unpopular because it’s against gay marriage and illegal alien amnesty. Yet it’s also true that the Tea Party’s clout is waning. According to the most recent Gallup poll, just 30 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the movement, the lowest level in its history. While this may technically be the lowest level, the Tea Party spent most of its time with a favorable rating in the 30s. In 2011, the Tea Party had a favorability rating of 33 percent. The reunion of Romney´s political brain trust comes amid a burst of positive buzz about the former Massachusetts governor -- from favorable reviews of "MITT," the Netflix documentary about his campaigns, to chatter among some powerful GOP donors about another Romney presidential campaign in 2016.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.—Rand Paul handily won the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday, one gauge of the Republican base’s mood less than two years before the 2016 primary season kicks off. The Kentucky senator received 31 percent, far ahead of second place Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received 11 percent. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished third with 9 percent, ahead of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who received 8 percent. The announcement came at the end of the group’s annual three-day confab. Organizers said that 2,459 attendees voted on computer kiosks.

The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. (Snip) The problem had to be big enough, he said, to stop the plane´s transponder from broadcasting its location, although the transponder can be purposely shut off from the cockpit.

“I told you so.” Those have to be four of the most satisfying words in the English language. And Mitt Romney has earned the right to speak that short sentence, over and over again, whenever he chooses. Not that he would — it would be “unbecoming,” to use one of Romney’s old-fashioned words that in 2002 had the mandarins of Political Correctness harrumphing about his “sexism,” I believe the charge was that time. But these days, Mitt looks more and more prescient, and his critics ever more deluded. First of all, Russia has become “our number one geopolitical foe,” as he put it
