Study: Gun owners more racist
Atlanta Journal and Constitution (GA), by George Mathis

Are you racist if you have a gun in your home? According to a study by foreigners, yes. Researchers in England and Australia randomly dialed phone numbers until they found white voters willing to take part in their study. Those who agreed to participate were paid $10 a month from January 2008 to September 2009 and provided Internet access if they didn’t have it. Respondents were quizzed to gauge their level of racism. Here’s a few of the questions: • How well does the word ‘violent’ describe most blacks? •How much do you agree with the following statement? “Generations of slavery and discrimination have created conditions

If you walk through a black section in any city, you are probably ten times as likely to be harassed, robbed, and/or assaulted than if you walked through a white section. It doesn´t matter what color YOU are.

So call me a racist. (and a gun owner)

~~Economist John Lott said it took him less than six hours to debunk the study.

“Disappointingly, none of the media coverage on this paper even bothered asking other academics to critique these claims,” Lott said. “The notion that gun owners must be racist appears to fit journalists’ worldview so well it probably never dawned on them that this research was fatally flawed.”

This is not a "study", as that term is commonly understood.

The fundamental reason is that the answers (assuming arguendo that they were even given, as claimed) to these (albeit very ambiguous) questions do not indicate so-called "racism".

At least not as the term "racism" is commonly understood -- which is an unfair bias against persons of another racial identification.

For example, matters directed to facts -- rather than towards attitudes, opinions or biases -- generally are not referred to as "racist" -- even though they may have a racial content.

For example, the statement that:

Persons identifying themselves as "black" usually have a darker completion than those identifying as “European”,

is not often considered to be a “racist” statement.

By the same token, the fact that more than 80% of the violent crime in the country is committed by a self-identified group having about 12% of the population, likewise is not by this definition “racist”.

Perhaps, those who toss around the term “racism” should be a bit more rigorous in defining their terms – then, perhaps we would not have a disagreement.

Okay, so we have a study that says randomly (perhaps not scientific-ly randomly) people contacted in Australia and England are racist.

As someone once told me, all people who ate carrots in 1859 are now dead, so statistically-speaking eating carrots can be fatal.

Or, as Rush Limbaugh put it in his morning update, Obama´s next line will be "If you like your gun, you can keep it."
