In Frank Herbert’s Dune the reader is told that the “world is supported by four things: the learning of the wise, the justice of the great, the prayers of the righteous, and the valor of the brave. But all of these are as nothing without a ruler who knows the art of ruling.” He might have added that naught avails a ruler without followers willing to follow. Today Saudi Arabia rejected a seat on the UN Security Council to which it had been unanimously elected in protest against “its long-time patron United States’ overtures to Iran, among other peeves,” according
Comments: Again the inestimable Wretchard applies his penetrating logic like a rural Tennessee three-pointed bullfrog gig-spear to that walking shadow: that poor player Obama, who struts and frets his hour on the world stage, and then is heard no more, managing to alienate America´s long term allies while causing our enemies to speed up their nefarious plans, knowing that he won´t act in America´s interest until it is too late.
While this is a good read, the presumption here is that BO is incompetent and has his head in some obsolete view of America that is no longer true.
Hmmmm. Giving BO the benefit of the doubt does not seem wise, given his capacity to make decisions that are harsh and tyrannical. Just one example is the closing of the National Monuments during the shutdown. It was almost as if it was planned in advance.
It is hard not to be a conspiratist when thinking about how far America has declined in such a short period of time. Is it possible these "moves" of Bo and his team is ideological with an endgame America will not tolerate once it is fully exposed.
Why is it the only warriors on the playing field are a limited number of brave Tea Party strategists who are being undermined by the so called conservative moderates (an oxymoron if there ever was one).
For America to survive this nonsense, the true Patriots in America have to rise up and be heard. They need to let Congress know that caving into the ONE is a recipe for more of the same at an accelerating rate.
America is on the brink of a major collapse culturally, socially and economically. All thanks to this socalled incompetent in the WH. Seems to convenient a truth to be true. There must be more to it than a failure to execute. This is a trend - and behind every trend is a strategy. America needs to wake up before they are totally anesthetized.
So now that Obama has rid America of all of her long-time allies, the only friends he now claims are Communists or jihadist Muslim theocrats.
The Founders, let alone our war vets since our Founding, are spinning in their graves. Their blood will be on Obama´s hands come the next war. He has made this world a far more dangerous place for peaceful, decent people, especially for Christians. (What is that ring he wears, anyway?)
What´s the next move? Just announce an alliance between nuke-ready Iran and the United States in order to further Sharia Law on our shores? We´re already getting schools shutting down for Muslim holidays. Shall we now begin Muslim Studies as mandated courses while we broom the schools of even mentioning Christmas or (heaven forfend) Jesus?
All of this makes Glenn Beck looks positively prophetic, prescient and brilliant. Never thought I´d say that.
Isn´t it interesting that the more bizarre the imagined outrages, the more likely they are to happen under this President?
"A seat on the Security Council was a prize, back when the Security Council meant something."
And when was that? Certainly not in the past two decades. For every country that wants us to intervene in another troubled country´s business, there are ten countries who want us to butt out. I would agree with ignoring Syria if Obama hadn´t triggered their problems in the first place. His ability to "fix" things has been disproven over and over. His ability to create catastrophe is beyond question, both here and abroad.
However, if he were the least bit competent, America would be crushed already. If you can´t complete your agenda in five years of destroying the greatest country on earth when you hold the position of Dictator-in- Chief, you are about as lame as they come.
So True! Our country´s future is some other country’s past. That´ why many could and can see what it coming. That Glenn Beck looks positively prophetic is simply because he has studied history and can put like with like, and he studies well. Many of us here were justifiably concerned about Obama before he was elected in 2008 for the same reasons. We could see our future because of Barry´s past, in principle, just not detail. In Barry´s world America is one big communal apartment building where one man´s floor is another man´s ceiling and the Obamboozler will not stop moving us "Forward" until we´re in the basement!
Yes, it´s true that Obama wants this country in ruins as in Cloward and Piven. I´ve said before, he´s not smart enough to do this or even write his own speeches. The little man is standing in front of the curtain and there´s a dynamic force working behind it.
Zero is an incompetent ideologue. His every move is to make the US pay for its injustices. He knows exactly what he believes but has no idea how this nation, or the world, would be affected once his ideals are implemented. This is a very dangerous administration and we have 3 years to go with Hillary waiting in the wings.
The last sentence of this powerful article hits home... "He always fights the last war and can’t even remember who won it, except to remain confirmed in his conviction that the future is some other country’s past."
And this great line as well... "He’s right on schedule to implement Obamacare in about 3 years time, when the website finally comes online, just in time to realize the government can’t afford it, and neither can its members."
The shutdown of the National Monuments was pre planned. I have this opinion for two reason which are quite simple. One, the signs were pre printed all over the country and ready on a moment´s notice to place in the parks. Two, the fences wired together were either new or freshly painted and so readily available. Three, the message to make the life of any individual wanting to enter the park was to make the experience as uncomfortable as possible.
But getting to Obama. He is following the teachings of a man who wrote his thoughts down for socialism years ago. He´s stuck in the words of a man who lived long ago. Time changes all things and Obama isn´t a creative thinker in solving problems in a constructive way for the betterment of this country, but he is darn good at being vindictive.
I really like this: "The Saudis are especially concerned about Obama’s blunders in ________ (fill in the blank)". Blunders R Us. The legacy of The Anointed One. Yes ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! The One who Won is the One we have been waiting for. I bet Zero Hero thought that if he supported his buds in the Mooslum Bruthahood that the Saudi´s would like him. Looks like he thought wrong.
And the mess he created will devolve to the next president, who will have the right to blame his predecessor, but won´t, because he (or she) is not as petty and psychologically damaged as our current, ahem, "leader."
I think it is very ironic, that what Richard details, is exactly the things Glenn Beck was saying four years ago. But, Beck is nuts and Richard is "sooo brilliant" for observing the obvious? I knew the folks on the left were and are just plain nuts. But, some of our folks on the right need to wake up to reality, too.
i don´t understand this Saudi Arabia thing, but as to this president living in the past and trying to nail down victories per scorecards of long ago - i totally agree, and again note this was apparently why president Buchanan failed to halt the slide into civil war. The country was worrying about slavery but Buchanan thought the whole issue was an unfortunate diversion from his commitment to westward expansion - he wanted to be just like Polk or Pierce or Fillmore or whoever it is that gained all that territory. He wanted to be Just Like Whoever it was, and now they are all forgotten, and only Lincoln is remembered. Lincoln read the signs of the times and took the side of enduring truth in the culture wars.
We all are familiar with the urn experiment from our college statistics classes. Suppose you have an urn with an unknown proportion of red and green marbles. After being blindfolded you reach into the urn and withdraw a marble and without replacing it draw 9 more. At the conclusion of the sampling there are 10 red balls on the table. What’s your best guess about the proportion of red and green marbles in the urn? Roger Simon makes a disturbing conjecture: “what if all the marbles in the urn are red?” What he actually he writes is “What if It’s
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists caught a 200-pound bear in the Longwood neighborhood where a woman was injured by a bear Monday night. The trapped female bear "closely fits the description of the animal that was involved" in the mauling of 54-year-old Susan Chalfant while she was walking her dogs Monday night. In a statement from FWC spokeswoman Karen Parker, because the bear was caught late Wednesday —within 48 hours of the incident and near the area where the woman was injured, "the decision was made to euthanize the bear." Samples from the bear will be sent in for testing,
Lee Vyborny, one of the “plankowners” of the NR-1 mini nuclear submarine recalls how Electric Boat became a victim of its own success during the Cold War. As more submarines were built both the unions and corporate freebooters started to cash in on the apparent river of gold which the burgeoning contract portfolio represented. (Snip) The same sort of misfortune seems to have befallen Venezuela. Its oil riches attracted rentseekers like flies to honey. And the biggest rentseekers of all are the Men of the People. Even the Guardian knows that the enlightened ones have done in what should have
President Obama’s foreign policy clout it growing from an unexpected source. First some background. In the Caribbean, where Venezuela’s PetroCaribe diplomacy once ruled the roost, the Chavez enterprise is on the verge of collapse. The reason is it’s going broke from more competition. (Snip) It is being beggared by not only the mismanagement of the Venezuelan oil industry but by fracking. Megan McArdle explained that scarcity — artificial or natural — was OPEC’s friend. Abundance was its enemy. "As long as prices were high, all of this was fine; Saudi and everyone else were pumping a lot and taking in
According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, Floridians support legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes by a whopping 82-16 margin, crossing all party lines. Frustrated by decades of inaction by the Florida Legislature, citizens have taken it into their own hands to put the issue directly before voters through a citizens’ initiative to amend the Florida Constitution. The question should be whether Florida wants to join 20 other states and the District of Columbia in making medical marijuana available to its residents suffering from debilitating illnesses. Instead, those in Florida leadership positions in both the legislative and executive branches are busy trying
One of the indefinable characteristics of deterrence is something called “credibility”. The credibility of a state was the confidence that if X then that state would do Y. It made things predictable. Now if the Obama administration says it will disarm Iran or stop North Korea, would it predictably do so? Iran seems to think the Obama administration will predictably not stop it. Recently Reuters announced that “Iran will pursue construction at the Arak heavy-water reactor, Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif was quoted as saying on Wednesday, despite a deal with world powers to shelve a project they fear could
Now that Americans have largely caught on that their government will lie to them to support the expansion of state power, America´s progressives are in for a rough time ahead, according to Peter Ferrara, writing at Forbes. "The second shoe is preparing to drop to shatter the world view of so-called Progressives. Coming, global revelations will demonstrate the fraud behind the theory of man-caused, catastrophic, global warming, just like the real world has shattered the falsehoods behind Obamacare. That is because the underlying reason for both frauds was the same: to expand government power. Enablers went along with the fraud in
Many commentators, most eloquently Bret Stephens at the Wall Street Journal, draw a parallel between the appeasement of Hitler at Munich in 1938 and the appeasement of Iran at Geneva. There is another, more chilling parallel: Iran’s motive for proposing to annihilate the Jewish State is the same as Hitler’s, and the world’s indifference to the prospect of another Holocaust is no different today than it was in 1938. It is the dead’s envy for the living. Dying civilizations are the most dangerous, and Iran is dying. Its total fertility rate probably stands at just 1.6 children per female, the
Paul Caron at the Taxprof describes the concept of the GUGIT, whose central idea is to “progressively” tax a person wherever he may be, whatever citizenship he might hold. (Snip) As George Will observed, “There’s no limiting principle in the principle that they’re invoking, that is majorities should rule all the time. What this means is if in the spring of 2017 there is a Republican president, which there could be, the Republicans still hold the House and they have 51 Senators, they can repeal Obamacare with 51 votes. And I’m not sure the people who did this today have
TAMPA — It took jurors less than an hour Tuesday to unanimously recommend that three-time convicted murderer Dontae Morris be executed for killing Tampa police officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis. “The fact that they came back 12-0 speaks volumes about the viciousness of Dontae Morris´ crimes,” said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor after the verdict was announced. “He didn´t just kill two police officers. He killed others in the community. If there is an instance where the death penalty is applicable, then this is it. The jury said that loud and clear.” Morris, who also was convicted in March
TAMPA — Dontae Morris could not overcome a “mountain of evidence,” including a dashboard video recording showing him kill two Tampa police officers and then running away as they lay dead or dying on the side of a road. An Orange County jury, bused in to Tampa, took four hours Friday night to convict Morris of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of escape in the killings of officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab on June 29, 2010. The jurors will reconvene on Tuesday to hear evidence over whether they should recommend a death sentence for Morris, who
Middle East politics amounts to managing the decline of a failed culture. Nothing expresses Arab failure more vividly than Egypt, a banana republic without the bananas, now living on a $14 billion or so annual subsidy from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf States. With 70% of its population living in agricultural areas, it imports half its food, and would starve if not for the Saudi check. Egypt is beyond the point of no return economically, and American foreign policy is beyond the point of no return intellectually. Americans of both parties–Obama and Kerry on one side, and Sens. McCain and
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Chief among the issues
Continued global warming poses a risk of rapid, drastic changes in some human and natural systems, a scientific panel warned Tuesday, citing the possible collapse of polar sea ice, the potential for a mass extinction of plant and animal life and the threat of immense dead zones in the ocean. At the same time, some worst-case fears about climate change that have entered the popular imagination can be ruled out as unlikely, at least over the next century, the panel found. These include a sudden belch of methane from the ocean or the Arctic that would fry the planet, as
America is facing a wave of strikes by its fast-food workers on Thursday a day after Barack Obama warned that inequality in the USA had soared to the point that it now posed "a fundamental threat to the American dream". Low-paid workers in McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast-food outlets in 100 cities across America were due to start rolling strikes to protest at the low level of America´s $7.25 (£4.45) federal minimum wage. The strikes are the latest part of a mushrooming publicity campaign for higher wages among those working so-called "McJobs", with fast-food restaurants seen as a
The world premiere of the “Ballad for Trayvon Martin for Orchestra and Jazz Quartet” is set for tonight. Princeton University’s director of its jazz-studies program composed the work in honor of the Florida teen. Anthony D. J. Branker told the Star-Ledger that the piece is intended to “be a form of healing” after Martin’s death and the controversial court case that followed it. The ballad, which will be performed by the university’s official orchestra and jazz ensemble, is intended to be a tribute to victims of racial violence, Branker explained. He hopes that the performance will be “one that speaks to
The president put in his ask to Disney CEO Bob Iger at a private meeting with entertainment moguls during his Nov. 26 visit to Jeffrey Katzenberg´s DreamWorks Animation. [snip] If you have any doubt as to how much of a sports junkie Barack Obama is, check in with the entertainment moguls who attended a private briefing with the president Nov. 26 before his speech at Jeffrey Katzenberg´s DreamWorks Animation campus in Glendale. At the end of the conversation -- which touched on a myriad of topics, from piracy to Iran -- Obama revealed what´s at the top of his bucket
