Astonishing Silence Greets
Shooting Death of Miriam
Carey by Police at Capitol

New York Sun, by R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.

Original Article

Posted By:mitzi, 10/9/2013 11:21:57 AM

I am just wondering if Miriam Carey, the mentally ill mother who drove her black Infiniti down Pennsylvania Avenue after she rammed a White House barricade, was read her Miranda rights before she was shot dead in a fusillade of gunfire by a gang of well-armed police who surrounded her car at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue. The information has not been released, though as I write almost a week has passed since the lethal event. Why could not those crack shots have aimed at her car’s tires. Then they could have waited for her next move. It looks

There should definitely be a full investigation into the death of Miriam Carey. But Tyrrell has been watching too many old movies if he thinks shooting out tires will stop a car. Sane or not, Carey gave up her right to life when she used her car as a weapon.

Sad to say, but she was not a white male. The MSM only wants to report on things that can imply a connection to the Tea Party. Very little was reported on the Naval yard assault also .

#2, Did you read the article? I think Mr. Tyrrell was just curious as to why this particular shooting has been treated so much differently than other police shootings.

By the way, I found the statement that "shots were fired at several locations" by police officials in some of the early reports as just nuts. The police were the only ones shooting - that statement insinuated that the ´perp´ was firing the shots.

I´m furious that nothing absolutely nothing has been followed up. It´s like we are numb to shooting. While her actions were one thing, the response to shoot first and never ask questions later has me baffled. I never thought I would say this but are we turning into Nazi Germany where anything done in the name of government is deemed ok, move along, sad but necessary???!!!

I would like more clarity and description of exactly what went on here.

HOWEVER, let me point out a few dumb things.

Police are never, EVER, going to "shoot out tires". What an idiot statement. Shot out tires will not necessarily stop a vehicle (look how many drawn out car chases we have seen with vehicles with shot out tires). Police will NEVER shoot "in the arm or leg just to wound".

In today´s world, if you ram barricades, and continue to use your car as an assault weapon, you will be shot dead.

I can imagine the outcry if the police kept their weapons holstered, or "shot out the tires" and the car with an explosive device got into a crowd and detonated. Then it would be an outcry "why didn´t you shoot the driver!". Then we would have the conspiracy folks screaming about how the government WANTED the bystanders killed so they can make laws and take our rights away.

It´s plain folks. Wave a gun around, you are going to get shot and killed. Use your vehicle as a weapon, you are going to get shot and killed.

If Ms. Carey was really trying to get at Obama, then mentally ill or not, she might have actually been the most brave and rational person in the country. Though perhaps a little misguided. We will never know.

Ms. Carey may well be worthy of our prayers and reverence.

FTA: "How many more defenseless citizens are going to be killed before the civilized among us demand action?"
Is that the last line you want us to read? this lady nearly ran over 3 cops in the video i saw. from what i know, the police exercised great restraint. and she was not unarmed. a 2500 pound car can do great damage. somehow you want the cops to do a full psych eval before defending themselves and others? was their behavior perfect? likely not. should there be a full debrief as to what should have been done and what wasn´t? of course. but lets not act like anyone on this site would have acted differently, should they have been in the position of those cops, defending the US capitol (aka, "high value targets"). Do we not recall the Boston Marathon? Kenya mall shootings and murders?

In the heat of the moment you protect your own. She could have had enough explosives packed into that car to take out several hundred people. Besides, Obama was in town. You don´t want your name on the duty roster if THAT happened.

The police don´t get paid enough to insure that a fight is fair. That went out with knights on white horses.

The police could have believed there was a possibility of a car bomb which many people would feel justifies shooting first and asking questions later. On the other hand, the police have become overly militaristic with SWAT Teams and armored personnel carriers. Excessive force is all too often the first response.

But the press silence is likely due to the fact that it was not a while male with an AK47, so they moved on. They didn´t want to dwell on the sad story of a black women with mental issues.

I do worry that the nation´s police have taken a giant step backwards in the last decade with a shoot first mentality and a general heavy handedness. Even worse, many agencies have been given police powers but don´t seem to be doing a lot of screening to make sure their personnel are emotionally suited to police work. On top of it all there is the trend to equip way too many police with the accoutrements of SWAT teams, which can effect behavior.

What #15 said. Still waiting for Feinstein to weigh in w/ her usual tirade against "assault weapons".

I get the take-no-chances, shoot-first-ask-questions-later mentality since 9/11. But in endangering Carey´s infant in the back seat, the cops violated a cardinal rule about using deadly force: you must clearly see what you´re shooting at before pulling the trigger.

As a recently retired police officer, I agree with #8. Police Officers are told never to shoot at tires and you are taught to shoot at center mass, not at an arm or a leg. The driver attempted to run over the police who surrounded her car and they had no idea what she had in her car. A bomb, maybe?

The police apparently were not fearful of explosives as I saw photos of them surrounding the car. I have not seen the actual scene where she was killed, nor do I think anyone else has. I suspect the reason is that such an airing would not be very flattering to the police.

Did these officers have stun weapons and a chance to use them rather than deadly force. From all reports they were in close proximity at first and knew who and what they were up against. At the very least they failed completely box her in when they first had the chance. That we have yet to hear a detailed explanation causes great skepticism.

Around this time period, I saw TV coverage of both the president and vice-president walking together down the sidewalk near the White House to a neighboring restaurant in one of those "We Are Just Ordinary Guys" photo opportunities. To have both out in the open is very rare and drives security people nuts. Was this the same day, I don´t know for certain, but if it was that might explain what I would term overkill.

#17 ~ a few days late with this but even if that car was packed to the roof with explosives, the pylons that make up the actual TRUCK PROOF entrance barriers should have stopped her.

But they didn´t.

They were recessed into the ground. All the guard had was a portable pedestrian barricade.

Something is seriously wrong with this picture. Why were the pyons recessed. Why were the guards allowing vehicles packed with dynamite to the ceiling into one of the White House´s many parking lots.

Why did they decide to shoot that woman?

Was it perhaps simply to COVER UP their derelection of duty?

It may not be tomorrow, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says "something will happen" to force a Nevada rancher to obey a court order to stop grazing his cattle on federal land and pay his grazing fees. "It´s obvious that you can´t just walk away from this," Reid said in an April 18 interview with a Nevada´s KSNV-TV News 3 program “What’s Your Point?” "You can´t have a law that is -- we´re a nation of laws, not of men and women," he said. (Video) Reid noted that most cattlemen pay their taxes, pay their fees, and follow

Joan Eisenstodt didn´t have a stopwatch when she went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist recently, but she is certain the physician was not in the exam room with her for more than three or four minutes. "He looked up my nose, said it was inflamed, told me to see the nurse for a prescription and was gone," said the 66-year-old Washington, D.C., consultant, who was suffering from an acute sinus infection. When she started protesting the doctor´s choice of medication, "He just cut me off totally," she said. "I´ve never been in and out from a visit faster." These days,

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning

Harry Reid isn’t backing down from his claim that rancher Cliven Bundy’s supporters are “domestic terrorists.” It’s astonishing rhetoric given the White House’s characterization of the mass shooting by a genuine terrorist, Major Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 Americans at the Fort Hood Army base after yelling “Allahu Akbar!” (God is great.) Rather than labeling Hasan’s actions “domestic terrorism,” the Obama administration is prosecuting him for having committed “workplace violence.” Democratic rhetoric is become ever more desperate and overheated as we approach the November midterm elections. Last week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that GOP positions on immigration were motivated by

Thirty-eight Republican lawmakers, including such unlikely bedfellows as John McCain of Arizona and Ted Cruz of Texas, have joined to support a lawsuit challenging the legality of the Affordable Care Act and accusing the president of repeatedly ignoring the law he signed for political reasons. The lawmakers have signed onto a legal brief in support of a lawsuit filed by Sen. Ron Johnson, the Wisconsin Republican who is asking a federal court to overturn Obamacare’s special treatment for members of Congress and their staffs. “The unlawful executive action at issue in this case is not an isolated incident,” the brief

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of American democracy is the magnificent estate of public land that it reserved from the very beginning for the use of all citizens, rich or poor. There is nothing like it in the democracies of Europe, which came into being with nations already carved up into private fiefdoms. The Great Idea that hundreds of millions of acres of forests, deserts, rivers and prairies should be owned by, and managed for, the public interest has had a profound and lasting influence on American culture. But not everyone has accepted it. Cliven Bundy’s armed standoff with the National Park
