Is the Devil for Real?
Time Magazine, by Rev. James Martin S.J.

Justice Antonin Scalia said in a recent interview with New York magazine that he believes in Satan. You could almost hear the eyes beginning to roll around the country. Well, guess what? Me too. “Of course!” said the Justice, “Yeah, he’s a real person. Hey, come on, that’s standard Catholic doctrine! Every Catholic believes that.” He’s right: it is Catholic doctrine. Christian doctrine, to speak more broadly about it: most Christian denominations also profess that belief. On the other hand, I’m not as sure about the characterization of him as a “person.” For a little insight into the Devil (or,

Final paragraph:

"Like Justice Scalia, I believe in the presence of evil as a coherent force opposed to God, and one that can sometimes overtake people. But I don’t necessarily believe in the popular conception of the Devil ...."

Not a bad piece....surprised to find it in TIME.
Reminds me of discussions I´ve had with some Libs. surprisingly, many of them won´t even acknowledge the existence of evil.

#4 - read what he actually said! "popular conception of the Devil."

But I don’t necessarily believe in the popular conception of the Devil. I’m partial to what the writer C.S. Lewis once said, when asked if he believed in the devil: “I am not particular about the hoofs and horns. But in other respects my answer is, ‘Yes, I do.’”

S.J.? Seriously?

He cites the scriptures with regard to evil spirits yet ignores those that refer to Satan or Lucifer as a specific entity. Sloppy bible study leads to sloppy understanding.

I´m reading his book My Life with the Saints. He´s a very liberal priest. The book is pretty good (he talks about which saints--some of them are not actual saints, like Thomas Merton--he relates to and how he learned about them) but I would say he is pretty liberal according to his writings. I think he would be just fine with women priests and gay marriage, and abortion and all that, from what I´ve read by him. Not my favorite, but it was selected by my book club.

Satan is a fallen angel, so therefore a real ´person´, I would think. I am a Catholic and it seems nobody believes any of the miracles or stories (or Satan in this case) in the OT were literally true. I love Father Barron, and I´ve read about all the reasons they give, including the early church fathers for everything in the OT being simply theological symbolism....however...

I would say to that--if the church does not believe any of those OT miracles, then how can we believe the miracles of Jesus? Those are as ´scientifically impossible´ as the ones in the OT. Why believe one and not the other?

I get that many incidents in the Bible are metaphors, etc. I get that. But that doesn´t mean we just assume it all is. Jesus refers to many of the OT figures and the miracles as real things that happened.

For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good.

And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.

And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.

Satan is a real entity. In fact, biblically, he is a fallen Angel, one of those who rebelled against God and formed his own "army", as it were.

Today, sans horns and pitchfork, he often appears as an "angel of light" or as benign people who have only evil at their core.

The mistake most people and far too many Christians make is believing that Satan is overt and easily detected. He is not. He is subtle, seductive and even the most intelligent among us can fall prey to his manipulations. Satan´s goal is to keep people away from God, to plant doubt in the minds of Believers and to corrupt absolutely.

A wise person once said that Satan´s greatest victory is convincing people he doesn´t exist. That is how he does his worst.

For a perfect explanation of how there really are evil entities in this world, today, here and now, read C.S. Lewis´ "Screwtape Letters". You may even see yourself among the victims, but you will never admit to Satan´s existence until you first admit the mere possibility that there are entities who are beyond our five senses and beyond the ability of science to detect.

Evil exists in the form of living Agents. As for the Rev. Martin, he needs to brush up on his Scripture.

I once asked my late father, an agnostic university professor, if he believed in the devil. "Nope," he said confidently, "It´s hard enough to believe in God." I persisted: "So, Dad, would you stand in a cemetery at midnight and state out loud, ´If there is a devil, come take me now´?" Dad thought a minute. "No, I would not," he told me. "And why not?" I demanded. Dad smiled and shrugged. "Why take chances?" he chuckled. Indeed.

"There are all manner of lesser imps and demons, Pete, but the great Satan hisself is red and scaly with a bifurcated tail, and he carries a hay fork."
- Ulysses Everett McGill (in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou")

I´m with Justice Scalia - Satan is far too sneaky to attack us mortals head-on. He much prefers it when we deny he even exists. In form, I believe he looks just like us, since we share common origins.

Yes, the Devil is for real. I read all of this article by James Martin, although I disagree with much of what he has to say on the subject. It peaked interest in more study on the subject of demons.

For those of you who are interested in the subject, the following link is to an article [demons, ancient superstition or historical reality] containing information that can satisfy some curiosity, give food for thought, or provide information for deeper study.

https://www.christiancourier.com/articles/21-demons-ancient-superstition-or-historical-reality

I hope the reader who disagrees with some of the author´s statements will continue to read and do as all of us should do with everything spiritual - search the Holy Scriptures as the ancient Bereans did to prove whether it is so. (Acts 17:11)

Interesting.
