DALLAS —In a shopping center parking lot 1,300 miles from Washington’s bureaucracy and bickering, teen mom Karina Luciano loaded a watermelon and baby formula into her car. Luciano didn’t realize the federal assistance program that just purchased the food items for her children, Aimee, 2, and Jaiden, 11 months, is now in jeopardy because of the government shutdown. “Oh my god, I think I’m going to cry,” Luciano said upon learning the news. “This is really bad.” Nearly 9 million low-income mothers and children receive benefits under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Hey vulnerable mothers, visit your local churches, Salvation Army and food banks. They will provide sustenance just no chips dips or prepared take out food.
Yeah, I am a hard nose but it is listed as "assistance" not free food for all!

I understand most people have lost their sympathy for any and all federal programs, whether they do good or not. It´s all tainted.
But WIC is one of those programs that have done more good than harm. It has strictly controlled food choices that EBT doesn´t.
I personally know struggling mothers who use it to the benefit of their family. They are not on EBT either. When I was married with children, I utilized it briefly and had to take a nutrition class to qualify.
So I sincerely hope WIC isn´t messed with for political purposes.
They have restricted the program for the shutdown. They aren´t taking new applicants, but they are still providing for those already using it.

The only time I had contact with a WIC mother was when a family of Asians who spoke no English were trying to buy all kinds of groceries with WIC coupons. The store had to find someone who could translate and tell them what they were limited to.

A healthy looking couple in their 30s with one healthy-looking, very active boy about 6 or 7.

They had reams of food coupons.

What is sad is this teen mother, because of her choices in life, is put in a perilous position as she doesn’t have the time, freedom and perhaps skills to adapt to this goobernment shutdown. She is so thoroughly devoid of skills and knowledge that she and her children are powerless to provide even the basics without goobernment. It isn’t that she and her children may have to suffer because the goobernment isn’t there to minister to their every need, it is sad that she has nothing but the goobernment to rely upon to meet her and her families basic needs. And thus, the skills, knowledge and ambition to achieve for oneself more than base essentials is unknown to her. And this limits her ability to pursue mundane things like happiness and self fulfillment.

Teen mom of one could be an accident, a lesson learned. Eighteen year old mother of two is a lifestyle.

Why is she still using formula? Her child is at the age where milk is acceptable.

It´s well known that they get more than a child can possibly eat in babyfood and formula, and the mothers then sell it so they can buy other stuff.

I´ve not heard of any cuts to the SNAP program. Welfare will be paid as usual. It´s the junk bought with their Welfare card responsible for many of the ills.
A few weeks back when in Wal-Mart-customer in front of me had cart loaded with Halloween decorations, customes and candy----paid for by cash, but took the SNAP card out to pay for milk and a few other items. This one sees frequently while shopping.

LONDON— With support growing for independence just months before Scots decide whether to break up with Britain, outsiders are weighing in with impassioned calls to keep the three-century-old union together. British officials from across the political spectrum, European Union leaders, corporate executives and retired military commanders have made their cases. Even David Bowie registered a plea for Scotland to “stay with us.” But there has been conspicuous silence from one major player with a lot to lose if Scotland secedes: the United States. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is now accusing the Keystone pipeline of being a cancer risk. Her first point was that the pipeline “will bring 830,000 barrels of dirty tar sands oil into our nation every day.” She then segued to point #2 by asserting that the heavy tar sands oil will put people who live near refineries at risk for cancer: Significantly higher levels of dangerous air pollutants and carcinogens have been documented downwind from tar sands refineries, and in these areas people are suffering higher rates of the types of cancers linked to these toxic chemicals, including leukemia and

President Obama stood Friday with the Rev. Al Sharpton and accused Republicans of trying to keep millions of Americans from voting, in a fiery speech days after new revelations about Sharpton’s past as an FBI informant. “The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago,” Obama told the annual convention of Sharpton’s National Action Network in Manhattan. Obama’s appearance represented a presidential seal of approval of Sharpton’s role as a civil rights activist, amid the new revelations about how Sharpton used a wire to record

As President Obama spoke of old "wounds” at Fort Hood this week, the White House declined a request from a survivor of the 2009 massacre there to meet with Obama for a few minutes so the veteran could explain face-to-face how he believes the government has mistreated and disrespected the victims of that attack. Staff Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford (ret.) was shot seven times in November 2009 when Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan opened fire at Fort Hood, killing 13 people. Despite Hasan’s admission that he carried out the attack on behalf of the Taliban and revelations that he had been

STAMFORD, Conn. — Jeb Bush defended his controversial comments about immigration reform, insisting they were nothing new for him and urging “sensitivity to the immigrant experience.” At a Connecticut Republican party dinner Thursday night, the former Republican governor of Florida did not repeat his remarks from last weekend at his father’s presidential library, when he said that people who come to the United States illegally in search of a better life for their children “broke the law, but it’s not a felony. It’s an act of love.” This time the potential 2016 candidate put it differently. “To be young and

Coming clearly through the throbbing of helicopters and the roar of the SUVS of the feds harassing the Cliven Bundy Ranch, patriots there for Bundy should “tell it to the judge”. There is mainstream media-suppressed case history in Nevada the feds are desperately trying to keep under wraps. Chief Judge Robert C. Jones of the Federal District Court of Nevada smacked down high-handed, abusive feds, sending the pretend cowboys riding roughshod over Western ranchers and property owners back to their cobweb-laced offices in 2013. In spite of their 200 armed snipers with boy toys in tow, those Stetson-wearing feds hunkering down on Cliven

President Obama labeled complaints about voter fraud “bogus” and accused Republicans of cynically trying to prevent Americans from accessing the polls in a fiery speech Friday at a civil rights forum hosted by Al Sharpton. Obama argued that attempts in some states to impose new voter identification restrictions were actually efforts by Republicans to make “it harder, not easier to vote.” And the president said that while voter fraud should be prevented, it rarely occurred. “So let´s be clear, the real voter fraud is the people who try to deny our rights by making bogus arguments about voter fraud,” Obama said. The last rancher in southern Nevada has won his battle to graze cows on public land after a week-long stand off with federal agents. The Bureau of Land Management today said it would stop trying to seize the cattle of Cliven Bundy after armed militia members today continuing to gather in Nevada in a confrontation with federal agents. BLM Director Neil Kornze said: ´Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of
