CARACAS- Venezuela said on Thursday the United States banned President Nicolas Maduro´s jet from flying through U.S. airspace over Puerto Rico en route to a state visit to China in what Caracas called an act of aggression. There was no immediate comment from the United States, and it was unclear why Maduro´s flight would be rejected. He is due in Beijing this weekend for talks. China is a major lender to his government, and Chinese firms are heavily involved in the OPEC nation´s oil industry. (Snip) "We denounce it as yet more U.S. aggression," Jaua said. Thirteen people, including a 3-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, were shot at a Chicago park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Thursday night, authorities said. Ten adults and the 3-year-old were transported by Fire Department ambulances after the attack in the 1800 block of West 51st Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, said Fire Department Deputy District Chief James Mungovan at the scene. A 12th victim was believed to have driven himself to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, a source said, citing preliminary information. Police said later a total

It’s time to face up to rumors, John Kerry!

It’s the buzz from Boston to the Beltway: What the heck is going on with Secretary of State John Kerry’s face??? The former senator’s usually craggy puss is now smooth, puffy and showing no sign of the laugh lines, crow’s feet or deep forehead creases that were evident in his 2004 official Senate portrait. Mr. State Secretary’s peeps flat out deny that Kerry, 69, had any work done. “No. End of story. That’s not a denial, that’s a fact,” said Kerry’s spokesman Glen Johnson. But the plastic surgeons we consulted were just as adamant: He’s fibbing, they said. “He had

Supreme Court to Consider
New Obamacare Case

Obamacare is before the U.S. Supreme Court again. On Thursday, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) lawyers filed the first viable petition for Supreme Court review involving Kathleen Sebelius’ HHS Mandate, which requires employers to provide abortion-related insurance coverage, even if those employers have a religious objection to abortion. Section 1001 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare) requires all large employers to offer “preventive services” to their employees or face enormous financial penalties. With President Obama’s approval, Sebelius issued a regulation that defined preventive services to include access to birth control, including those that cause abortions after conception. The regulation

An Ohio clinic that was touted by Obama while he was speaking on health care reform is now blaming ObamaCare after it was forced to cut $330 million from its budget. Fox 8 reports the Cleveland Clinic, which is the largest employer in Northeast Ohio with about 39,000 workers in the region, announced the cuts to its 2014 budget at a meeting Wednesday. A spokeswoman for the clinic tells Fox News the clinic is being forced to cut back to prepare for increased costs and decreased revenue under the health care reform law. These changes will include offering early retirement to

The leaders of the Administrative Review Board that investigated the attacks on US facilities in Benghazi, Libya, appeared before the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee Thursday, and offered testimony that further undermined the already-tattered credibility of their own probe. In descriptions that emphasized their friendly, even collaborative dealings with the top State Department officials who were ostensibly among the subjects of their investigation, Ambassador Thomas Pickering and Admiral Mike Mullen defended their work and shrugged off criticism from Republicans on the panel. But the substance of the responses from Pickering and Mullen, respectively chairman and vice chairman of the ARB,

Former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) made a celebratory return to his old stomping grounds on the House floor Thursday after seeing his criminal conviction overturned in court. The former majority leader, whose 2010 conviction for money laundering was tossed out on Thursday morning, was in the lower chamber during the close vote on legislation that would cut $39 billion from food stamps. Fifteen Republicans defected during the food-stamp vote, but there was no sign "The Hammer" — which was DeLay´s nickname for his hard-charging style of leadership — was lending a hand with his famous whipping skills. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Thursday said Democrats are unified in their efforts to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government including Obamacare while Republicans are split on whether to support a bill that defunds Obamacare but funds everything else. “As these fiscal deadlines approach, we Democrats are standing strong. We’re standing together, and we’re sending a strong message to the House: We will not blink,” Schumer said. “Don’t make it part of your strategy that eventually we’ll cave. We won’t. We’re unified. Sen. House conservatives joined Mr. Cruz, Texas Republican, and Sen. Mike Lee, Utah Republican, in heaping praise on House Speaker John A. Former Rep. Tom DeLay said not much changed after a Texas appeals court overturned his conviction Thursday and acquitted him of charges he violated campaign finance laws — except that he will have a key constitutional right restored. “I can get my concealed weapon license back,” he told reporters at the Capitol. Mr. DeLay had been convicted by a Texas jury of laundering money through several political groups in order to help federal candidates win elections in Texas, but an appeals court said the money-shifting was legal and tossed the conviction and officially acquitted him of the charges.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) told House Republicans to stop acting like “squealing political pigs.” “We need to act like adults not like squealing political pigs,” Durbin said on the Senate floor Wednesday. Durbin’s remarks were in reaction to a House Republican announcement that they would advance a government spending bill that defunds ObamaCare — something Democrats have said would lead to a government shut down. “If that is what the Tea Party Republicans think is leadership, God save the United States of America,” Durbin said. Unless Congress agrees on continued spending resolution (CR) by Oct. 1, the government

In 2010, Republicans took the House of Representatives by gaining 63 seats. They also picked up six U.S. senators and 675 state legislators, giving them control of more legislative chambers than any time since 1928. The GOP also won 25 of 40 gubernatorial races in 2009 and 2010. These epic gains happened primarily because independents voted Republican. In 2010, 56% of independents voted for GOP congressional candidates, up from 43% in 2008 and 39% in 2006. Today, independents look more like Republicans than Democrats, especially when it comes to health care. In a new Crossroads GPS health-care policy survey conducted in 10

It´s hard not to admire how Senator Ted Cruz spent his summer. Months of touring the country and TV appearances telling conservatives that he wanted an (unwinnable) fight with the White House on Obamacare, getting the fight, and now sitting ringside cheering half-heartedly as the House throws punches. Cruz, a freshman from Texas, wasn´t the first guy to suggest that the party use a budget fight as leverage to rollback the Affordable Care Act, the president´s signature legislation. That idea dates back to 2011, as Chris Hayes noted on All In Wednesday night. In his segment, Hayes probably gave Cruz more

In one of the most fascinating foreign policy interviews of all time, Fox News aired an unedited, lengthy and exclusive interview with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Wednesday. The in-depth interview focused on diplomacy, chemical weapons, the death toll from the two-year-old war, the rebels’ goals, future governing and the region’s stability. Assad appeared calm, comfortable and yet delusional, talking in almost perfect English, as he consistently labeled the rebels as “terrorists,” claiming that 80 - 90% of the opposition fighting against his military was comprised of Al Qaeda supporters and other jihadists. In talking about the origins of the conflict, Assad failed to

In a speech at the Business Roundtable headquarters in Washington, D.C., Obama dismissed concerns about raising the debt ceiling by noting that it´d been done so many times in the past: "Now, this debt ceiling -- I just want to remind people in case you haven´t been keeping up -- raising the debt ceiling, which has been done over a hundred times, does not increase our debt; it does not somehow promote profligacy.

On Tuesday night, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz wrote the following open letter asking customers to no longer bring firearms into the stores, even in states where they are legally permissible to carry. He notes that this is not a "ban" on guns, but rather a request. In the letter, Schultz expresses frustration with pro-gun activists who have held "Starbucks Appreciation Day" events at the company´s location, ostensibly to laud the coffee shop´s policy on open-carry. Schultz does not want these events held at Starbucks any longer. With the letter, he risks incurring the anger of a large segment of the population.
