For the last few weeks, House Speaker John Boehner has been trying to find a way to convince his caucus to vote for a bill that keeps the government open after Sept. 30 without picking a fight over Obamacare. But a minority of his caucus has been insisting on defunding Obamacare, egged on by outside conservative groups and a handful of far-right Republican Senators, most importantly Ted Cruz (Texas). This has been pretty annoying for a lot of House Republican members and staff. Jonathan Strong and Andrew Stiles of National Review got an anecdote out of a closed Republican Study Committee
#5, Senator Cornyn was making his own decisions before Ted Cruz got into long pants. If I thought Cruz really believed in his mission, I might be more supportive of it, but Cruz is too smart to believe this effort will succeed. Cynic that I am (and yes, I voted for Cruz), I tend to think he is simply building his own reputation as a RINO challenger and he knows his fans will love him whether or not the government gets shut down and whether or not the shutdown is blamed on the GOP. It´s a win/win for Cruz.
#7 You believing the propaganda that obamanation care cannot be defunded? Anything can be undone, even something done by a messianic black president. Where in the Constitution does it say it is forbidden?
Of course it can be defunded, but it will not be successfully accomplished in this way and Ted Cruz is plenty smart enough to realize that. Did you read the article? If Ted Cruz is truly going into districts (John Culberson is a cousin) and claiming defunding Obamacare will be "easy", he is not being honest and sincere. He´s posturing.
Remember during the Carter Administration that they said the Government was too big for one man and they tried to have Reagan take Ford as his Vice(Co)President? Well, Cruz has been a game changer when added to Lee, Paul and to a lesser extent Rubio. DeMint´s addition to Heritage has given him more heft as an ally. These guys that don´t want to fight have a big pblem. Expect a fight over the Hastert Rule.
Culbertson is a Gas Bag from DeLay´s old seat. In the Establishment inside the Beltway but acts like he´s Ted Cruz Jr. on local radio.
They are hitting Ted and the rest with all they have to no result. This reminds me of a quote from Tarawa. "Casualties many; Percentage of dead not known; Combat efficiency; we are winning." Colonel David M. Shoup.
#17, just a few corrections to your post. Tom DeLay´s district was the 22nd. John Culberson (there is no t) represents the 7th district, which was George H.W. Bush´s district. It´s a solid, long-time Republican district.
Ted Cruz is MY HERO!!!! He is fearless and WE DON´T CARE IF HE HAS THE VOTES because we want someone standing up for us, and a vote forces the rest of them to show their true colors!!!! If we can get the ball rolling for a Constitutional amendment for a 12 year term limit in congress, the RINOs can be annoyed and miserable at their own house.
Okay, let me see if I get this straight. What Cruz is doing is pointless, and possibly destructive to conservatism, and won´t result in the repeal of Obamacare, and will just alienate more of the general public from the Tea Party, but that´s fine, because he´s standing up for your rights. Your right to what? Ensure Democratic rule?
Cruz and co. at least have a strategy which is more than we can say for the R leadership of House or Senate. It is very telling when Cruz is criticized for being ambitious. Senator Cornyn will continue to support Cruz if he is wise.
I guess #25 is right. Let´s do what Republicans always do and just surrender now and get it over with. We´ll play nice, while the Demon-RATS get exactly what they want and the public realizes, once again, that we have no spines.
Not just no, but HELL NO!!! If Ted Cruz had that defeatest attitude, he never would have even dreamed of running against Republican extablishment big dog David Dewhurst in the primary. Øvomitcare is about to get it´s tenticles into every aspect of our lives and destroy our healthcare system. We have one chance to slow it down, and that is exactly what Cruz and company are doing. If we don´t do something now, it´s over.
There already is little hope for the future of our nation. We need mavericks and pit bulls taking the lead. The establishment Republican lap dogs sure aren´t going to!!!
There is no strategy, #27, except to elevate Senator Cruz´s image as a fighter. Beyond that, there´s nothing. He won´t mind if destruction lies in the wake of those who fall in line with him. Not very many on this thread actually read the article, it appears.
You can´t keep your doctor, he´s retiring. The cost curve has been bent up not down. If you are young and healthy you need to help pay for the older and sicker. Surely you won´t mind if a couple of hundred thousand folk who are on Medicaid use the honor system to get a premium payment tax credit for a premium they don´t pay. Oh and by the way, our preexisting condition pool is running 4X the cost of past state run programs. Brought to you by Dems and Establishment GOP.
Reading stuff like this thread can make one despair for the republic.
Trying to rally (‘scuse me: ANNOY) people into actually voting to defund 0-care is just about bolstering Ted Cruz’s image. Got it.
Those 41 symbolic repeal votes? GOP is all over it. Ask them to do something substantive, forget it – they might lose the next election, but I guess we’ll never know, will we? The ones putting up a spirited fight? Annoying. Why don’t you tea partiers just shut up and join with Sauron…
Obviously the only way to “win” so that we can reduce the size of gov’t is to not pass a budget, to borrow money, print money, raise the debt limit without conditions, fund the healthcare bill that Americans want repealed, agree to business-stifling regulation, etc ad infinitum.
The budget deal announced Tuesday by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) would boost federal spending by around $65 billion over the next two years. This new spending is offset by increasing user fees, boosting pension contributions by federal employees and the military, and other minor changes. Ryan and Murray also say that the deal will reduce the deficit by $23 billion over the next 10 years. This reduction, however, doesn´t start until 2022. According to a 4-page summary document of the deal obtained by Breitbart News, "[t]he budget proposal saves $28 billion over ten years by requiring
President Obama will extend his mini-amnesty for young illegals, said Cecilia Muñoz, White House director of domestic policy. “As long as this president” is in power, “you will be able to renew your deferred action,” Muñoz told one questioner during an online question-and-answer session on immigration conducted via Skype. So far, Obama’s deputies have granted the two-year “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” amnesty to at least 567,563 illegals, giving them the right to get jobs in every state, get drivers’ licenses in some states, to enroll in school and to receive government aid. Only 21,162 illegals have been rejected. Roughly 11 million
The White House insisted Wednesday that President Obama’s credibility had not been damaged by the botched rollout of Obamacare, despite a series of recent polls showing his diminished standing with the American public. "I don´t think I agree with that conclusion,” White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said of the assertion that fewer Americans trust the president because of broken promises over his signature domestic achievement. However, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found that 54 percent of respondents disapproved of the president’s job performance, driven mainly by the problem-plagued rollout of Obamacare. Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed said Obamacare was
The death of iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela prompted torrents of gushing praise from world leaders and media this week. Mandela was widely depicted as a near-flawless human being. BBC presenter Evan Davis said Mandela ranked near Jesus in the "pantheon of virtue"; Bono said Mandela was "stubborn ´til the end for all the right reasons, it felt like he very nearly outstared his maker." But the truth about Mandela is somewhat more shaded. He will be remembered for his magnificent legacy of racial unification in the aftermath of his release from prison in 1990. Mandela´s critics worried, not unreasonably,
Imagine if a provision in ObamaCare allowed Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to dictate directly to doctors which services they could and could not provide their patients—what individual tests they could conduct, which treatments they could offer, and medicines they could prescribe. Americans would be outraged. Yet some Republicans on Capitol Hill are about to help Democrats pass such a provision for Medicare patients. The Senate Finance Committee is set to vote on permanent "doc-fix" legislation Thursday that grants the federal government broad new authority to determine "applicable appropriate use criteria" for the full range of outpatient medical
Most of Washington seems to have bought the White House claim that the 36 federal exchanges are finally working, and glory, glory, hallelujah. But if that´s really true, then what explains the ongoing secrecy and evasion? On Wednesday the Health and Human Services Department continued its Victorian-era strip tease and allowed a glimpse into the Affordable Care Act´s "enrollment" for November. Out of respect for a free press, reporters ought to boycott these releases because they´re so selective that they reveal little about real enrollment. But we´ll try to parse the data as best we can without the White House high
Federal Spending: The hue and cry over the two-year budget deal masks the real threat facing the country — the vast and potentially permanent expansion of government by President Obama during his first five years in office. Michael Needham, who heads Heritage Action for America, called the budget deal put together by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., a "step backward." He´s right. The plan relies on some of the worst budget gimmicks around. It boosts spending in the next two years by $63 billion, for example, while spreading the promised $85 billion in cuts over 10 years. But it is,
Revelation: Colin Powell, George W. Bush´s secretary of state, has confirmed the suspicion that derailed his plan to run for president: He´s not just a liberal, but a socialist. It´s been a long time ago now, but Powell was once the dream Republican presidential candidate for a lot of pundits, campaign experts and ordinary Americans who appreciated his outstanding military service and pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps success story. Now we find that Powell is with the extreme left of the Democratic Party on health care, supporting European-style single-payer socialized medicine. "I don´t see why we can´t do what Europe is doing, what Canada is doing, what
Diplomacy: President Obama extended a hearty handshake to Cuba´s iron-fisted dictator Raul Castro just as the latter was beating up dissidents back home on the eve of Human Rights Day. No good will come of this. After six months of secret talks through Cuban emissaries — secrets kept from the American people, not Cuba´s dictatorship — the time seemed right for a flailing U.S. president and a dictator on the skids to shake hands and make nice at Nelson Mandela´s funeral in South Africa. For some shallow observers, it was all about Mandela´s legacy of everyone getting along. But it´s bad for the
So here’s the photo, my photo, which quickly lit up the world’s social networks and news websites. The “selfie” of three world leaders who, during South Africa’s farewell to Nelson Mandela, were messing about like kids instead of behaving with the mournful gravitas one might expect. In general on this blog, photojournalists tell the story behind a picture they’ve taken. I’ve done this for images from Pakistan, and India, where I am based. And here I am again, but this time the picture comes from a stadium in Soweto, and shows people taking a photo of themselves. I guess it’s a
Roberto Schmidt, a German-Colombian photojournalist based in India, saw a moment worth capturing at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in Soweto, South Africa on Tuesday, and capture it he did: the ‘selfie’ taken by President Barack Obama along with two other world leaders and next to a p1$$3d-off seeming Michelle Obama, immediately went viral. Mediaite sure covered it, as did most internet publications, and by early afternoon it was gristle for cable news commentators on both the left and the right—much to Schmidt’s dismay. “It’s a sign of our times that somehow this image seemed to get more attention than the event
Oakridge, New Jersey - There have been many taxes put in place to help fund Obamacare that are rarely discussed in the media. Michael Studnick, a certified public accountant with Studnick & Associates in Oakridge, New Jersey explained some of the new taxes placed on earned and unearned income. The new earned income tax to help fund Obamacare is 0.9%. "Earned income is compensation from participation in a business, including wages, salary, tips, commissions and bonuses," Studnick explained. This tax will be placed on any income earned over $250K for those who are married and filing jointly. The new unearned income tax is more
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
Barack Obama has arrived in South Africa to lead the American delegation at a memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. But his party is reportedly stuck in traffic and he is said to have arrived late at the stadium for the ceremony. [Snip] But Mr Clinton, Mr Carter and his wife Rosalynn have all traveled separately to the event. According to reports, Mr Obama and his delegation are stuck in a lines of traffic caused by tens of thousands of people making their way to the event. Mr Obama is among the foreign leaders who
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
