They call semiautomatics like this sport rifles. You bet. Mostly for the sport of killing innocent people, and killing them fast. So it takes nine months and two days from Newtown, from 20 dead children and six adults, for someone else to carry the same kind of AR-15 that Adam Lanza carried into Sandy Hook Elementary School into the Washington Navy Yard. They call semiautomatics like this sport rifles. You bet. Mostly for the sport of killing innocent people, and killing them fast. This time the shooter is reported to be a Navy reservist named Aaron Alexis and when he is shot dead
CNN is now saying he probably didn´t even use a rifle, just the shotgun he brought with him and the two handguns he took from the security guys. But Lupica doesn´t let the facts get in the way of a spit-throwing, wall-eyed hysterical rant!
"If you think gun violence has reached a new high, you´re far from alone. However, according to a new statistical survey, you’re also wrong.
"The study, published Tuesday by the Pew Research Center, says that gun homicides have declined by a full 49 percent since their peak in 1993. There has been an even steeper decline, 75 percent, in nonlethal crime victimization (with or without a gun) in the period between 1993 and 2010.
"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show there were 11,078 gun homicide deaths in the U.S. in 2010, compared with 18,253 deaths in 1993.
"Nonfatal gun crimes dropped by 69 percent during that same period, according to a separate report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics that was also released Tuesday.
"Interestingly, the Pew study finds that 56 percent of respondents believe that deaths caused by guns are more frequent than they were 20 years ago, compared with just 12 percent who accurately said the rates had declined."
And anyway - at close quarters that Remington 870 loaded with buckshot is just as effective as an AR-15, and probably more effective. You just load it on the go. Pop more rounds in the tube and keep pulling the trigger.
Hey, Mike Lupica, ya big dummy! He didn´t use a AR-15, he didn´t even use a rifle! He had a shotgun. Perhaps if the powers to be locked up crazy people instead of letting them walk the streets we would all be better off!
Over the past 12 hours, we have learned that the perpetrator had a valid and legitimate ID and had ready and legal access to the base. He had this because he was employed as a civilian contractor by the USN. We have also learned that he has had multiple fire arms related "interactions" with law enforcement. Basically, I would not have hired this character with his record to vacuum cars at my car wash. Why did he have a security clearance and access to a critical military base? Is there anything that the US Government can do well?
As the liberals correctly point out, these tragic murders demand a legislative response, greater gun control.
We must, in the words of 0bama, "do everything we can to try to prevent them."
The only proven method of gun control to stop gun violence, far more effective than all other methods, is to have as many well-trained, honest citizens as possible have weapons at hand, especially concealed.
Do we have the courage, Mr. President, to address this issue honestly? I know I do.
By the way, the same method has been shown to prevent killing sprees by tyrants, and those sprees have been far more deadly than the relatively tiny numbers of mass shootings in this (relatively free) country, the USA.
Stronger gun control? Absolutely. Let´s do it! Start with ending "gun free zones."
FTA: "The FBI’s assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office said Tuesday that gunman Aaron Alexis acted alone in the Navy Yard shooting that killed 12 people and added "we do not have any information" that an AR-15 was used. Mike Lupica’s column was written Monday when The Daily News and The Associated Press among many others reported, using reputable law enforcement sources, that the shooter Alexis had used three weapons including an AR-15."
IOW, Mike Lupica was "Shooting from the Lip" without any facts. Shoulda stuck with "Travel + Leisure Golf". It´s obvious that he knows less than beans about the subject of this article.
So what´s your point, Mikey? For every AR-15 used by a lunatic, thousands more around the world and their military brothers, the M-4 and M-16 are being used to protect people and defend their liberties. I can live with those odds.
More people commit suicide every day with "legal" drugs than are shot with firearms in this country. Ban medicine!
The ´mouth that roared´. Mike has always had very strong and strident opinions, even in the days when his reputation as a crack sportswriter was still intact. My opinion of Mike´s opinion comes from a great Medieval Knight - "I f-rt in your general direction!"
Never let the facts get in the way of a good story. The gunman used both slugs and buckshot. At close range they are equally deadly. No AR-15 was used in the commission of this felony. I guess we should now ban Joe Biden, who urged housewives to get themselves a shotgun. Oh, well.
AR-15s are military style rifles good for shooting people as well as animals. It´s exactly the sort of rifle you would need to defend yourself from a tyrannical government. Owning such weapons and so being able to defend one´s self from a tyrannical government or a band of marauders in the absence of law and order is the exact purpose of the second amendment. The second amendment does not just ensure that one can go hunting small game.
Having said that Aaron Alexis apparently rented an AR-15 but returned it before the attack. He used a shotgun and two handguns obtained during the attack.
the newsies, including fox couldn´t be bothered to report on the peaceful, patriotic 800,000 bikers running into DC, but spend hours covering - if you could call the mishmash of misinformation reporting- this guy shooting up the Navy Yard.
I do find it quite ironic that the libs are so against any US citizen having a semi auto rifle while are so for arming the terrorist rebels with automatics and more in Syria. what´s up with that?
Mike Lupica is Keith Olberman-lite-a far left New York liberal who happens to "cover" sports. I could have written his remarks for him-he is as predictable as global-warming admonishments after a hurricane. I´m sure that he considers himself an informed, concerned, intellectual, but he´s a simpleton with a store of pat responses.
House-Senate negotiators are close to a modest budget accord to avoid another government shutdown, but suddenly the White House is introducing a last-minute demand. Five years into an economic recovery that President Obama often hails as miraculous, he wants to extend unemployment benefits one more time. Maybe it´s time to consider whether the big expansion of unemployment insurance has increased joblessness. In 2009 the Obama Administration and Congress extended jobless benefits for up to 99 weeks. The point was to help people through the recession, but now the jobless rate is 7%, down from 10%, and the White House still wants
Media: Russian ruler Vladimir Putin dissolved his state news agency on Monday, apparently for being insufficiently fawning. President Obama doesn´t have to worry about that with the dominant media here. The ex-KGB officer ruling an eighth of the planet´s inhabited land for nearly a decade and a half now, with no end in sight thanks to rigged elections, has abolished RIA Novosti and replaced it with a kind of reborn Radio Moscow. "Radio Putin," as it should be called, will propagandize to the rest of the world. RIA actually described the purge it is victim of as heralding "a tightening of state
Hysteria: The British Daily Star reports that Britain is in for 30 years of extreme "killer winter storms" due to climate change. There is, of course, no way anyone can know this for sure. But that's never stopped the alarmists. (Snip) In its "Extreme Weather Events in Europe" report issued last week, the European Academies Science Advisory Council bedeviled the populace about a future of deadly heat waves, floods, droughts and deep freezes. The report, which is the basis for the Daily Star's eye-catching journalism, suggests that individual member states of the European Union "will need to develop and share information
Propaganda: A lesson plan for third-graders linked to a controversial federal education initiative makes sure America´s next generation does not forget who is the one we have been waiting for. During the Soul Train Awards in 2012, comedian and actor Jamie Foxx exhorted a wildly cheering crowd to "first of all (give) honor to god, and our lord and savior Barack Obama," exhibiting the all-too-widespread hero worship that casts rational thought aside and labels even legitimate criticism as virtual blasphemy. The same cult of personality is creeping into lesson plans and reading materials being created under the guise of the platform for
I read at Breitbart that the Satan-worshipping group Satanic Temple wants its very own statue outside the Oklahoma Statehouse in Oklahoma City alongside a Ten Commandments monument. USA Today reports that the Republican legislature invited such insidious activity by authorizing the privately funded Ten Commandments statue on the Capitol grounds. If they were to decline the commission of a Satanic icon, it could constitute an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment. The ACLU has already filed a lawsuit for the removal of the monument. As Lucien Greaves, the spokesman for Satanic Temple,
TWO THINGS ALL conservatives love are narratives of decline and talking about conservatism. Put those together and you have the popular argument that conservatism ain’t what it used to be. The chart of that supposed decline, if you were to draw it Ascent of Man style, would start with Edmund Burke looking intelligent and walking upright, followed by William F. Buckley as Australopithecus, slouching. The present age would be represented by some knuckle-dragging, prognathous creature like Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. First comes very smart, then pretty smart, and then not very smart at all. Some of those on the right
DOHA, Qatar -- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the U.S. military to transport troops from Burundi into the Central African Republic to help quell the latest upsurge in violence there. Hagel approved the order after speaking with French Minister of Defense Jean-Yves Le Drian Monday night from Afghanistan where he was visiting troops. Le Drian asked the U.S. to help get African troops quickly into the country to prevent the violence there from spreading, said Pentagon spokesman Carl Woog. There are more than 1,000 French troops in the Central African Republic, where Christian armed fighters launched an attack
RUSH: Do you know, folks, that you can keep your doctor after all if you´re willing to pay more? That´s from Zeke Emanuel, brother of Rahm Emanuel, who´s one of the architects of Obamacare. And you can. If you´re willing to pay more, you can keep your doctor, and nobody ever said anything else. "Obama didn´t lie to you," he said. "It´s just a matter of choice." No, no, it´s not. We´re losing choice. I was thinking about something. Those of you that were not alive in the 1950s hear a lot about it and how the old fuddy-duddies want
RUSH: I kid you not, the Daily Caller: "Liberals Want to Stop Men From Checking Out Women." Liberals want to make it a crime for men to ogle or otherwise look at or otherwise admire or otherwise dream about or otherwise fantasize about or otherwise look at and laugh, whatever, women. "In the progressive future, men will not be able to look at women´s bodies because that is a terrible thing to do -- and science says so. "Researchers have offered a definitive report into the science of the male ´objectifying gaze,´" and that is in quotes, "in the December
RUSH: There´s a fascinating couple of stories on wealth. Do you know, folks, one of the things, talking about wealth and poverty, the poor, the rich, when I endeavor to explain American exceptionalism -- and, by the way, if I may be a little Obama-like here. In the foreword that I wrote for Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims -- remember that book written for children 10 to 13, primarily for everybody. I wrote my definition of American exceptionalism in a way that young people can understand it. At least I tried to. My uncle read that portion at our
RUSH: Well, they tried to make me the villain in the soap opera about the pope, but it just didn´t take off this time. They´re still out there trying. There´s a left-wing Catholic group with 6,000 signatures to a petition. They´re a left-wing, pro-abortion bunch of Catholics, which means they´re not really Catholic. Anyway, they´re trying to raise all kinds of problems with this, but they´ve not been able to. I have a column here in my formerly nicotine-stained fingers by Shikha Dalmia at Reason.com. It´s entitled, "The Pope´s Self-Defeating Anti-Capitalist Rant." The piece does not mention me, but it
President Obama has found someone to blame for the Affordable Care Act´s rolling failures besides Republicans. ObamaCare is the government´s fault, not his. On Thursday, Mr. Obama dropped by American University for a heart to heart with Chris Matthews, and the MSNBC host wondered who in the executive branch is responsible for the botched health-care rollout. Mr. Obama listed a few impersonal culprits including "cynicism," "Washington gridlock" and "the management of government," but he then drifted into another classic. "The challenge, I think, that we have going forward is not so much my personal management style or particular issues around White House
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Call me Grinch, call me Scrooge. Call me Lord Voldemort of the Yuletide. None could be worse than sending me a holiday card with glossy photographs of your lovely, smiling family. My wife, Emily, and I place your cards like trophies on our shelves, continuing an old-school practice that began about 175 years ago as a way of maintaining relationships as families and friends moved far and wide. Today’s cards may appear more personalized — with photos of spouses, kids and pets, and distribution lists much smaller than a sprawling collection of Facebook friends. But when I flip over the photo
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a last minute decision not to participate in a memorial service for the late South African President Nelson Mandela, despite having notified the South African government that he would attend the event. The decision was made in light of the high transportation costs resulting from the short notice of the trip and the security required for the prime minister in Johannesburg. The Prime Minister’s Office found that the trip would have cost roughly 7 million shekels ($2.4 million) – 2.8 million shekels for chartering a private El Al plane and a further 3.2 million shekels for
