The Movement Strikes Back
National Review Online, by Robert Costa

Original Article

As the deadline to fund the federal government nears, Republican leaders are struggling mightily to come up with legislation that can pass the House. Over the weekend, leadership staffers fired off anxious e-mails and uneasy veteran House members exchanged calls. Both camps fear that a shutdown is increasingly likely — and they blame the conservative movement’s cottage industry of pressure groups. But these organizations, ensconced in Northern Virginia office parks and elsewhere, aren’t worried about the establishment’s ire. In fact, they welcome it. Business has boomed since the push to defund Obamacare caught on. Conservative activists are lighting up social media,

I don´t think Costa approves, but the article is relatively fair.

And when we have grassroots, they are real down to the last particle of dirt, unlike the Communist AstroTurf.

Think of what could be accomplished if the Republicans spoke as one voice as the democrats do. We are a party divided over the very essence of what role government plays in our lives. In Washington this is being played as an extremist group (conservatives) against measured and nuanced thinkers (Republicans) which is a lie. This is a movement of traditional thinking Americans who know in their gut that they are losing this country, their way of life and are fed up. This is the TEA Party movement. Republicans talk strategy but nothing ever gets done. They are too busy playing the Washington game to worry about the average American. Obamacare will be the ruin of personal freedom if it is fully enacted. Right here, right now is the hill to die on.

Achieving goals without a strategy for doing so is a doomed effort. It does no good to yell "defund" without any idea of how that could realistically succeed. Today, no. But tomorrow, of course it can happen. First we have to control more than one branch. It´s frustrating, but it´s the truth.

The only strategy to consider is the PR war, as Republicans control the House they certainly DO have the means to defund this monstrosity. If they will not stand on principle they will always CONTINUE to lose.

At this point the debate is theoretical, but even Ted Cruz doesn´t believe a GOP defunding will stand in the Senate and then on Obama´s desk. It all sounds good, but it cannot happen.

I hope no one is going to do that, but yes, if it happens, it will be Obama who shuts it down. But you and I and the guy behind that tree are the only ones who will understand. Shutting down the government will kill us in 2014, because the media will see to it that the GOP is blamed. In the end, Obama and the Dems win and the GOP loses all way round. Feeling good about taking it to the mattresses is not sufficient justification for risking the critical gains we must make in the 2014 election.

We don´t control any branches. Obama has the liberal republicans in his back pocket, and they seem pretty OK with that, as this thread demonstrates.

There is no indication that big government liberal Rockefeller Bush Romney republicans want or intend to dismantle national health care.

Which is why it is the PR war that is important. I can not imagine how we lose in 2014 after we hang the dems votes re this funding, for something that 70%+ of the electorate does not want, around their necks, the fall back move then becomes delay for a year so "Joe Six Pack" is on an equal footing with "Big Business and congress". This is why a vote to preserve principle in important.

It would be a lost opportunity that House Republicans could not unify on a position (either defund or delay) and a forge a long term strategy to defeat ACA.

Never has Barry´s glass jaw been so evident than during and after the whole Assad/Putin fiasco. There was no way the House would authorize military action. Prospects in the Senate were also dubious. Even members of Barry´s own party bolted. Most pols instinctively sense blood in the water. Barry has demontrated that he is ineffectual with Congress and weak on the international stage. On top of that, the ACA is increasingly unpopular with the public. Exemptions to Congress for ACA enrollment is only fueling the fire.

Unless the House Republicans can get its act together in the next few weeks, they will fail to capitalize on a singular moment when Barry and the dems are flailing around. This will require leadership; a quality that has been found wanting in both the WH and Congress.

Scientists believe that over the last two billion years or so, there have been as many as seventeen times that Earth has experienced an Ice Age. They suspect an Ice Age when they see shifts in geological formations that are so severe that the only explanation appears to be glaciers forming and moving large quantities of land from one part of the continent to another part. Each Ice Age is estimated to have lasted for at least 100,000 years, with some lasting millions of years. Each was eventually followed by a period of gradual warming, resulting in the glaciers melting and

One of the hallmarks of the Obama administration is that it is among the most corrupt administrations in living memory. The degree of corruption and thuggery to which many administration members have stooped would make even Boss Tweed of Tammany Hall fame blush. But what’s truly remarkable about the Obama administration is that its corruption is so unabashed. Among the most corrupt functionaries of the Obama regime is Attorney General Eric Holder, who appears to be Obama’s alter ego and enforcer. From day one he let America know that he held most of its citizens in contempt by proclaiming that the American

The back-and-forth drama on the House Oversight Committee has gotten heated over the past few months. Last month, Elijah Cummings threw a fit when Issa shut down a hearing after retired IRS Director Lois Lerner plead the Fifth Amendment. Issa fired off a personal letter at Cummings, claiming that he and his attorneys were frustrating the fact-finding mission of the Oversight Committee. Following revelations that Cummings’ staff was working with the IRS to get information on True the Vote, the same group Cummings tried to shame into silence through the race card, further evidence indeed suggests that Cummings was shaking down and

A bombshell revelation has brought the IRS scandal to a new level. Judicial Watch has released internal IRS communications revealing that former Tax Exempt Organizations director Lois Lerner was in contact with the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding whether it was possible to criminally prosecute tax-exempt groups she believed had “lied” about their political activity. Judicial Watch obtained the documents by successfully filing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the IRS in October 2013, following the agency’s stonewall of four FOIA requests dating back to the previous May.

Among the pearls of wisdom: Carr: “Who are you for, for president right now, Ann?” Coulter: “Um…well, don’t tell’em, but I’m planning on giving Mitt Romney a little more time to rest; flying out, kidnapping him, and depriving him of sleep, food and water until he agrees to run again.” Carr: “You’re kidding.” Coulter: “No” Carr: “You really want him to run again?”

One of Boehner closest friends, Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA), is retiring this year, and another—Rep. During the debates surrounding the adoption of the Constitution by the several states, one commentator observed that "the government should be so small that it doesn´t matter who wins." Well, the government is no longer small, and this year, in Virginia´s Seventh Congressional District, it matters very much who wins. Republicans are not the only people in this country who are dismayed at the collapse of conviction and principle in the party’s national establishment. Gone are the days when GOP leaders would defend valiantly the principles of limited government, the rule of law, and the rights and duties of individual

The ultimate party litmus test: given a veto-proof legislature, will Republicans finally start to reduce the scope and size of government? It looks like the answer is no. In 2013, North Carolina was just one of 25 states where Republican governors were given historic opportunity to govern alongside Republican-controlled legislatures. Despite conservative voters’ best hopes, any sensible mandate to restore individual and economic freedom flew out the window when the FY 2013-14 budget was approved, reauthorizing the formerly Democratic state’s blueprint budget with a tragic 2.0-percent increase in general fund appropriations.

The danger is this: In the USA’s upcoming 2014 elections, Republican elites assume that everyone all now agrees that conservatives ‘must’ support non-conservative candidates to win more elections. The GOP is operating on the belief that everyone is on board, simply because insiders have officially decreed it to be so. However, the grassroots in the USA remains unconvinced. Worse, the Republican establishment has no plan for truly healing the actual wounds. Elites want to avoid change more fervently than they do want to win elections.
