President Barack Obama could have saved himself a lot of headaches, and potentially his presidential legacy, if he had done one thing: cultivated a relationship with Congress. It doesn’t have anything to do with courting GOP leadership or caving to tea party conservatives. Multiple congressional Democrats believe the White House would be in a better position today if the president had made more of an effort to communicate with Democrats on the Hill from the beginning. “When the stakes are high, negotiations are easier and smoother if there is a level of trust already established, ” one Democratic operative said.
Comments: Yup. When you strut around making sure members of Congress and international allies understand that you are the guy who won, you are the guy who rules the heavens and that you need no one else...then those folks tend to remember and to snicker when it turns out you aren´t any of those things and you have to admit it. There aren´t any chits to call in and no friendships to rely on.
Continuing the comments: He has never had to deal with opponents. As a community activist, his job was to beat down his opponents and get what he could for his communist buddies, along with a few crumbs for the South Side of Chicago residents. This is what he knows how to do. It won´t work in the real world. He does not know that, yet.
The article appears to be wishing that Obama had done things differently so that the vote in Congress for attacking Syria would pass.
Still, it´s a thoughtful and interesting article.
I always expected Congress to unify and slap down the President´s use of executive orders to countermand and bypass Congress (unconstitutionally). To use a sports metaphor, it´s like a football coach calling in the plays but the QB does whatever he wants instead. I would expect the coach (i.e. Congress) to get pretty upset with the QB (Obama), but what do I know? The Democrats in Congress are so politically invested in Obama and preserving Obamacare, Dodd/Frank and the expansion of the welfare society that they have no standards, none at all. They are pliable in their support. Obama can and has flip flopped his position on many topics and they just spout the new talking points.
This is a serious observation. Barack has a narcissistic personality disorder, which makes it impossible for him to cultivate personal relationships with members of congress or anyone else. Except Reggie Love and the other guys at the Man´s World bath house in Chicago.
Picking Obama´s biggest mistake is like trying to pin down a cause for the failure of a lousy marriage. When both sides did everything wrong, who is to blame?
Obama vacationed, danced and flitted across the golf course while the democrat goblins found countless ways to spend every dime in the treasury while accomplishing nothing. An easier question would be, what did he do right?
Hubris, ego, narcissism, Inflated self-opinion. These are some of The Won´s personality disorders that will lead to his downfall. Not to mention compulsive lying, lack of any moral compass, and a "By Any Means Necessary" approach to prevailing. This is not surprising. The man is what we knew him to be 7 years ago. He is a mental lightweight, lazy, community organizer, raised by devout socialists.

Mr. Gonzalez forgets the Chicago Way There is no separation of powers in Chi-town. That´s the Chicago Way. The executive has all the money and power. The city council has only corruption to sell. That´s the Chicago Way. It is a mistake, he´s right. But it´s the Chicago Way. The federal separation of powers, and the jealousy of the legislature will doom the Chicago Way in the White House. Have faith.
Why is everyone pretending that this empty suit is a prime mover? It´s past time for reporters who aren´t "on the take" intellectually to start referring to the idiots behind the scenes who are telling this puppet what to say.
T he Black Death is back. One of the most devastating pandemics in human history, the Black Death — also known as the plague — killed more than 25 million people in Europe, Asia, and North Africa at its peak between 1348 and 1350. And it has re-emerged in Madagascar. Last year, 60 people died there from the bubonic plague — the highest death toll in the world. And last week, 20 people from a single remote village died from it. Madagascar’s Pasteur Institute, which confirmed that the deaths had occurred due to plague, is worried that the plague may now spread to towns
Excuse me, but I’m a little confused. Just why are “movement” conservatives and libertarians so angry with Paul Ryan about the budget deal he made with Patty Murray? Now, of course, I understand why some politicians are angry, or pretending to be. They’re Ryan’s competition for POTUS in 2016, assuming the Wisconsin congressman wants to run. They’re positioning themselves for a campaign. But the rest of us? Let’s stipulate this: No conservative or libertarian is going to get what he or she wants on government spending — or even anything remotely close to it — without winning the Senate in 2014 and
As my pal Nathan said, this might be the first award he’s gotten that he truly deserved. But give him time. A few more years of dithering until Iran has a nuclear weapon and he might earn that Nobel Peace Prize after all. “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it,” President Barack Obama said — many times — of his landmark new law. But the promise was impossible to keep. So this fall, as cancellation letters were going out to approximately 4 million Americans, the public realized Obama’s breezy assurances were wrong.Boiling down the complicated health
The GOP has been struggling to recapture the Senate majority for nearly a decade. Now, the sixth year itch, a plethora of vulnerable red-state Democrats, and Obamacare’s unpopularity appear to be forming a perfect storm – if the Republicans want it. Six years ago, the Democrats were riding high: after winning the Senate back two years prior amidst scandals and the Iraq War, they improved their gains greatly, coming within a seat of a supermajority (which then-Republican Senator Arlen Specter happily granted just a few months later). This was accomplished with a mix of reasonably close overthrows of sitting Republicans (Sununu,
A wild mustang trainer from Texas, a former champion in one of the most competitive horse events in the country, faced a new challenge this year. He had to train his daughter on how to tame and prepare a wild horse for Texas´ Mustang Million competition in just 120 days, all for a chance at winning hundreds of thousands of dollars to help their family. The Mustang Million is annual event that awards $1 million in total prize money to trainers who can prove they are the best at breaking wild mustangs into trusting partners. Trainers from across the United States flock
WASHINGTON -- An American who vanished nearly seven years ago in Iran was working for the CIA on an unapproved intelligence-gathering mission that, when it came to light inside the government, produced one of the most serious scandals in the recent history of the CIA - but all in secret, an Associated Press investigation found. The CIA paid Robert Levinson´s family $2.5 million to head off a revealing lawsuit. Three veteran analysts were forced out of the agency and seven others were disciplined. The U.S. publicly has described Levinson as a private citizen.
The powerful uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been executed as a "traitor for all ages," the official news agency reported. Jang Song Thaek faced a special military tribunal Thursday and was convicted of "anti-party, counter-revolutionary factional acts" in a bid to overthrow the the communist country´s leadership, KCNA reported Friday in Pyongyang. The state news agency did not say when or how Jang was killed. North Korean media reported Monday that Jang had been purged for crimes that included faction-building, corruption, drug use and womanizing. He was considered the country´s most powerful figure after his nephew. State TV aired
Not only could you "shoot your eye out, kid," you might also go to jail for owning that BB gun in certain states. New Jersey and other jurisdictions make little or no distinction between Daisy´s classic Red Ryder BB gun immortalized in the film "A Christmas Story," and real guns. They must be registered and are subject to the same laws as any firearms. “In all honesty, kids who are charged are looking at mandatory jail time,” said New Jersey attorney William Proetta, adding that under the state’s Graves Act, a conviction could lead to prison time. “The only defense is to
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced this morning that nearly 365,000 Americans had signed up for private health insurance under Obamacare. The vast majority came from 14 states running their own insurance exchanges, while 137,000 came by way of HealthCare.gov, the much-faulted federal Web site that handles enrollment for the remaining states. But amid the rush to enroll as many people as possible by the Dec. 23 deadline, there’s a huge caveat that isn’t getting much public attention: For coverage to take effect on Jan. 1, enrollees must pay their first month’s premium on time. (The deadline varies
If you like your selfie, you can keep your selfie. Period. Unless, of course, you’re Barack Obama, in which case, you better delete it from your smartphone pronto, unless you’d like to spend the next three or four months dining on hot tongue and cold shoulder. You didn’t need a fake interpreter from an old Woody Allen movie to translate Moochelle Obama’s body language. So there they were, Barry, British Prime Minister David Cameron and the hot-wife leader of Denmark, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, hamming it up like it was the 25th anniversary reunion of the Choom Gang. Some Krazy Kids, horsing around, waiting for
The British security firm that failed to protect the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, from a terrorist attack a year ago that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens was told by the State Department to avoid the media, the latest example of stonewalling over the attack. In newly uncovered emails received by the public watchdog group Judicial Watch, State was notified that the firm, Blue Mountain Group, was being pressed for answers about the surprise attack. Instead of giving the group the green light to answer the media, State ordered the firm to go into hiding. “Thank you so much for informing us about
Regularly scheduled elections are a hallmark of the American political system. In 18th-century Britain, the monarch could call new elections on a whim, and our Founders saw in that arrangement a seed of tyranny. The Constitution they designed requires elections for Congress every two years, and the next such elections are less than a year away. This is good news for conservatives as they continue to oppose the Obama administration. This president has been tremendously helped by having a Democratic-controlled Senate for his first five years in office. Harry Reid’s masterful, if not entirely virtuous, use of Senate rules has
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
The health director who approved the release of President Obama’s birth certificate has died in a plane crash, Hawaiian officials said Thursday. Loretta Fuddy died after the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft she was travelling on went down shortly after leaving Kalaupapa Airport at around 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. The other eight people on board were rescued, Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC News early Thursday, adding that that there was no indication as to why the plane had crashed. Fuddy hit the headlines two years ago when she approved a waiver request allowing Obama to
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
Views of the tea party are at all-time lows in a new poll, as primary challenges to establishment Republicans continue to heat up Washington. Just 30 percent of Americans view the tea party favorably in a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the movement’s lowest point since Gallup began polling about it during its rise in 2010. Also in a first, a majority of Americans had an unfavorable view of the tea party, at 51 percent. Similar numbers of respondents described themselves as proponents or opponents of the tea party: Twenty-two percent identified themselves as tea party supporters, while 24 percent said they
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
Fox News host Megyn Kelly has made herself the center of a racial controversy by declaring that Jesus Christ and Santa Claus are white. On Wednesday night, Kelly was responding to an article by Slate writer Aisha Harris, who wrote an article entitled “ Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore .” The popular news host told viewers of “The Kelly File,” her hit FNC program, “When I saw this headline, I kinda laughed and I said, ‘Oh, this is ridiculous. Yet another person claiming it´s racist to have a white Santa.’ And by the way, for all you kids
THE Internet has been abuzz over the spectacle of President Obama and the prime ministers of Britain and Denmark snapping a photo of themselves — a “selfie,” to use the mot du jour — with a smartphone at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa on Tuesday. Leaving aside whether it was appropriate, the moment captured the democratization of image making that is a hallmark of our gadget-filled, technologically rich era. Manifestly undemocratic, in contrast, is the way Mr. Obama’s administration — in hypocritical defiance of the principles of openness and transparency he campaigned on — has systematically tried
