It is a major fishing event set for Friday, but on Thursday, more than 30 wounded soldiers received a hero´s welcome. Heroes Cup is a special event put together by the Warrior´s Weekend Organization, and it´s for soldiers who have been injured in the line of duty. Those wounded warriors, many of whom served multiple deployments overseas, arrived at Labonte Park Thursday. ARLINGTON, Va. –Tens of thousands of wreaths made in Maine have been laid at graves at Arlington National Cemetery. Trucks carrying about 120,000 balsam wreaths began rolling toward the Washington, D.C.-area cemetery Dec. 8. They arrived Saturday. All told, the Columbia Falls-based nonprofit Wreaths Across America expects to ship 470,000 to 500,000 wreaths to adorn veterans´ graves across the country and overseas this holiday season. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine say the Senate has passed a resolution designating Saturday as "Wreaths Across America Day." The wreath-laying tradition began in 1992, when the owner of Worcester Wreath Co.

FORMER BANKER Paul Grangaard recalls a time when most of his colleagues owned only a few pairs of shoes: two to alternate between for work, one for the weekend and a pair of running shoes or sandals. That, he has noticed recently, is no longer the case. "I have a friend who´s the CEO of a Fortune 500 company in Minnesota. He tells me this is the first time he´s had more than four pairs of shoes," said Mr. Grangaard, 55, now the president and CEO of American shoe brand Allen Edmonds. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Rep. Paul D. Ryan are friends and political allies, one helping the other in 2012 when Walker faced a recall attempt and Ryan ran for vice president on the Republican ticket. But when it comes to winning the White House, Walker has sounded less than supportive of a candidacy by his fellow Badger State lawmaker, suggesting someone more like himself. "There´s no doubt, as much as I love Paul and some other people mentioned, in my mind it´s almost a given that not only for the future of the party but for the future of

[Video] The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that tunnels along the southwest border are a growing and significant threat to security. According to a report by the DHS OIG released December 11, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, charged with protecting the U.S. borders, lacks the technological capability to detect subterranean tunnels. “Illicit cross-border tunnels along the southwest border are primarily used by criminals to transport illegal drugs into the United States, and they are a significant and growing threat to border security,” noted the report. “In an effort to

Bells tolled 26 times to honor the children and teachers killed one year ago in a shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School as local churches held memorial services and President Barack Obama observed a moment of silence. Mr Obama marked the anniversary of the Newtown school shootings earlier this morning by calling for tighter gun control and expanded mental health care. ‘We haven´t yet done enough to make our communities and our country safer,’ the president said in his weekly address. ‘We have to do more to keep dangerous people from getting their hands on a gun so easily.

Tiny Vermont Gets $208 Million

In mid-November, Americans for Tax Reform compiled a list of federal spending on state Obamacare exchanges totaling a breathtaking $4.5 billion. One number on the list stands out from the rest — and it´s not California´s, though its $910 million amout is awful, disproportionate, and surely highly wasteful (before considering scalability concerns, the fixed costs of building a web site should be close to the same regardless of a state´s population). The big eye-catcher is tiny Vermont´s staggering $208 million. The nation´s second-least populous state (626,000 as of 2012) has 0.2 percent of the U.S. population, but has received 4.6

On Saturday, President Barack Obama devoted his weekly address to the nation to remember the massacre of children and school teachers in Newtown, Connecticut, one year ago today. Obama said that the nation “must do more” to prevent future tragedies like what occurred at Newtown. “These tragedies must end,” the president insisted. “More than the tragedy itself, that’s how Newtown will be remembered,” Obama said in his weekly address. “And on this anniversary of a day we will never forget, that’s the example we should continue to follow,” he continued, “because we haven’t yet done enough to make our communities

It was just a year ago last November and Lauren Weber remembered it as a “joyous event.” Her entire family journeyed from Fairhaven to Parris Island to watch her kid brother, Matt, fulfill the dream of his 18-year-old life and become a Marine, as his father had 40 years before. “My little brother was born to be a Marine,” Lauren said yesterday. “Matt idolized my dad, who was a Marine who fought in Vietnam. The whole family was there to celebrate Matt’s achievement and we were all so very proud.” And yet, nestled in the pride that warmed this family’s collective heart was the cold realization that just like his father,

Steve Harvey got the chance for a one-on-one interview the President of the United States this week, a rare opportunity for a journalist let alone a comedian. Harvey made one item clear up front about his exclusive chat--he didn´t ask President Barack Obama any political questions. Later, Harvey described the interview to the press and even defended Obama from taking a "selfie" at a great leader´s memorial service, an action so tacky even Jon Stewart said it

Let me begin with a categorical statement that, given current events and recent political history, can be easily defended: Barack Hussein Obama is a willful, indoctrinated child of the Left with strong Islamic sympathies who is not fit to govern. Indeed, he would not be fit to govern Lower Slobovia, let alone the United States of America. Obama is a historic disaster of the first magnitude and, if not restrained, he will see to the irrevocable decline of the country which foolishly elected him, leaving the world on the brink of a conflict — or in the midst of one — whose repercussions cannot be underestimated. In his 1952 book The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy, Israeli historian J. L. Talmon described a political system in which lawfully elected representatives rule a nation state whose citizens, although granted the right to vote, have little or no participation in the decision-making process of government. The federal government has become such a system, an entity unto itself operating outside of Constitutional constraints and unaccountable to the American people. The United States is now controlled by a Democratic and Republican ruling class that transcends government and sees itself as distinct from the rest of society and as the only element that may

Columnist Charles Krauthammer attacked new Obamacare rules unveiled by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in a late Thursday conference call, saying the Obama administration is “approach[ing] banana republic lawlessness” by issuing the decrees. Krauthammer spoke with Fox News’ Bret Baier on a panel with Juan Williams and Judge Andrew Napolitano, as the three reacted to Sebelius’ new directives for insurance companies. “This is exactly a reaction to a deep understanding among Democrats that [Obamacare] is a train wreck,” he said. “And it’s a panic reaction. As the judge said, this is utterly lawless. This now approaches banana republic lawlessness.

The meetings were described as somber and moving by publishers who were present. Ms. Fulton and Mr. Martin were accompanied by Jan Miller, their Dallas-based literary agent. WASHINGTON – It’s not exactly a ringing endorsement of the budget deal.“Embrace the suck,” House minority leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi told fellow Democrats Thursday morning, a source told Politico.“We need to get this off the table so we can go forward,” she added. It’s a way of telling her colleagues the budget deal negotiated with Republicans is the best they can get. Democrats are fuming that the bipartisan budget deal doesn’t extend unemployment benefits for more than a million Americans. One of Pelosi’s top lieutenants, Rep. Fearing that many people will think they have health insurance coverage when they do not, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is "urging" insurance companies to "give consumers additional time to pay their first month´s premium and still have coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2014." Insurance companies should cover people who haven´t yet paid, in other words. With just a few weeks to go until Obamacare takes full effect, Sebelius announced additional changes on Thursday, some that tell insurance companies how to run their business and others that "strongly" encourage insurance companies to waive their rules -- on premium payments,

In a game-changer for the legal fight over same-sex marriage that gives credence to opponents’ “slippery slope” arguments, a federal judge has now ruled that the legal reasoning for same-sex marriage means that laws against polygamy are likewise unconstitutional. In his 91-page opinion in Brown v. Buhman, on Dec. 13, U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups struck down Utah’s law making polygamy a crime. In so doing, he may have opened Pandora’s Box. As a condition for becoming a state in 1896, Congress required Utah to outlaw polygamy, which is marriage between three or more persons. This case involved a family of

A landmark budget agreement that passed in the U.S. House on Thursday faces certain death in the Senate unless at least five Republicans step up to support it--but so far there are no takers at all. The GOP´s Senate leaders plan to launch a procedural effort to kill the plan over a laundry list of objections--including a claim that it short-changes military veterans and other government retirees.
