The Gap Between Kerry’s
Rhetoric and Obama’s Plans

Commentary Magazine, by Jonathan S. Tobin

Original Article

In testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this afternoon, Secretary of State John Kerry put forth a compelling and at times eloquent argument on behalf of U.S. action in Syria. But as was the case with Kerry’s statements last week that seemed to be the prelude to swift and decisive U.S. action in response to the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons, the secretary’s remarks to the committee seemed out of proportion to what the administration seemed to be promising if Congress acceded to the president’s request for an authorization of force. If American credibility is on the line in

Even by FL standards, Jake Rush

Nothing like a little gamer-occult-rape-cocaine imagery to keep Florida in contention for the Capitol of Weird. So thank you, Jake Rush. The Republican lawyer and former cop wants to topple tea party Congressman Ted Yoho. Rush´s first web ad shows him swearing on the Bible, wearing his old Alachua County Sheriff´s Office uniform and teaching kids about the U.S. Constitution. The images of him wearing black contact lenses while dressed in Dracula-like leather outfits? Not so much. But an anonymous emailer on March 23 began outing Ross as a member of a role-playing gamer-group called Mind´s Eye Society. Rush´s campaign responded hours later by saying

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul’s push to be a Reaganite on foreign policy is eviscerated by remarks caught on video last year in which he denigrates the potential use of force in Iran and bizarrely claims the United States was partially to blame for causing World War II. In the video, posted on a Paul fan Web site and dated Feb. 24, 2012, he minimizes the threat of an Iranian nuclear weapons, saying merely “It is not a good idea” and claims an Israeli official doesn’t think an Iranian bomb is an existential threat to Israel, something no Israeli government

Why is Obama administration

Why isn´t the Obama administration willing to finance the customs plaza for the new international bridge over the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario? That´s a question raised by this article in the Wall Street Journal. As the Journal notes, the government of Canada has agreed to pay, as part of a public-private partnership, about $3.65 billion for building the bridge, including a $550 million link with Interstate 75 in Detroit. The new bridge would provide an alternative for the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, which was opened in 1929. Yet the Obama administration isn´t ponying up $250 million to build

President Obama’s diplomacy by tourism has gone very sour. After being scolded by the Pope for Obamacare’s forcing religious institutions to provide contraception and abortion coverage, Obama jetted to Saudi Arabia where he was scolded by the Saudi king about his failure to send aid to the Syrians fighting Bashar Assad and his nuclear agreement with Iran. It’s getting tiresome. President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry are carrying on as if they have everything under control, every crisis has abated, and no one should be overly concerned. By now they must have noticed that every world leader disagrees with them.

Finland Frets as Russia Launches

Russian military drills near neighboring Finland have provoked concern that northern Europe may be the next focus of Moscow´s seemingly renewed appetite for redrawing its borders. Troops and jet fighters from all four military regions of Russia were deployed Sunday about 150 miles east of the Finnish border, according to the English-language newspaper Finnbay. The Russian defense ministry said in a statement that the exercises were pre-planned and that more than 50 fighter pilots took part. Finland was part of the Russian empire for 108 years, from 1809 until Russia’s withdrawal from World War I in 1917. The Karelia region,

WASHINGTON — Faced with a strong prospect of losing control of the Senate in November, Democrats have begun a high-stakes effort to try to overcome one of their party´s big weaknesses: voters who don´t show up for midterm elections. The party´s Senate campaign committee plans to spend $60 million to boost turnout. That´s nine times what it spent in the last midterm election, in 2010. The Democratic National Committee has begun to make the sophisticated data analysis tools developed to target voters in the 2012 presidential campaign available to all the party´s candidates. And from President Obama on down, influential Democrats have hammered

Is Rand … “evolving” on foreign policy? If you read Russian news and follow Internet debates, you´d think that Russia was on the verge of civil war if you didn´t know better. Like in other civil wars, the front line runs between colleagues, friends and even family members. The division is over the annexation of Crimea and attitudes toward Ukraine. "Old friends break off relations, children have stopped talking to their parents, and I´ve even heard about divorces. It is insane," the prominent psychologist Lyudmila Petranovskaya wrote on her LiveJournal blog. President Vladimir Putin set the aggressive tone of the debate in his Crimea speech two weeks ago

His chapters alternate between Rose’s impressive chronology and present-day Cooperstown. For anyone who missed it, Pete Rose won Rookie of the Year with the Cincinnati Reds in 1963. MVP awards and six World Series appearances followed. He left for Philadelphia in 1979 as the highest-paid athlete in America. In 1984 he was “repatriated to the Reds” as player-manager and soon broke Ty Cobb’s all-time hit record. His professional baseball days ended in 1989

I have no objections to Jeb Bush running for president. He obviously has a wide appeal as a potential candidate. (Snip) His support of Common Core, however, will also find many who are in the conservative ranks objecting, since they fear that Common Core represents educational centralism and having the government ram federal standards down their throats. What I do object to is that Bush is already being heralded as the obvious candidate, the man to whom the big money must and will flow. Obamacare, the plan purportedly created to provide health coverage for the uninsured, has enrolled just 1.7% of America´s 48.6 million uninsured. News of the disastrous numbers comes as nervous Democrats and President Barack Obama, ahead of the November midterm elections, did their best on Monday´s enrollment deadline to put a positive spin on the deeply unpopular Obamacare program. (Snip) The White House now claims an Obamacare enrollment figure of six million people. However, according to The New York Times, at least 20% of those never paid their premiums to activate coverage, leaving them uninsured.

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Climate change is already having sweeping effects on every continent and throughout the world’s oceans, scientists reported Monday, and they warned that the problem is likely to grow substantially worse unless greenhouse emissions are brought under control. The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations group that periodically summarizes climate science, concluded that ice caps are melting, sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, water supplies are coming under stress, heat waves and heavy rains are intensifying, coral reefs are dying, and fish and many other creatures are migrating toward the poles or

A National Labor Relations Board official has given the green light to Northwestern University football players to form a union. The March 26 decision by the NLRB´s Chicago regional director, Peter Sung Ohr, held that scholarship football players are "employees" for purposes of federal labor law. Ohr rejected the longstanding view of Northwestern and the National Collegiate Athletic Association that players are "student-athletes" rather than employees. Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract--a key ingredient in the hot drink--is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol. Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in
