Will the House Authorize a Syria Strike?
National Review Online, by Jonathan Strong

Original Article

President Obama’s surprise decision to seek congressional approval for a Syria strike puts the plan in the hands of the Republican-controlled House, but it’s far from clear the House will comply. GOP sources say it is highly unlikely leadership will whip support for the proposal; such “votes of conscience” are typically left to members’ discretion. While there is still plenty of time for Obama to make the case for war, lawmakers are still seeking answers to big questions, chief among them being what a strike would accomplish. That’s true among Democrats as well. One Democratic aide says if the

Sure, go ahead and authorize a missile strike--AFTER Obama agrees to kill amnesty and Obamacare, and has done so.

The Senate Dems are saying that they´re writing a Bill to cover the Syria Bombing Rules. They´ll probably get a copy of the Obama Care Bill and just replace the top cover of it with their Syrian Bombing Title. Then Pelosi and Reid will say we have to pass the Bill to see what´s in it. After all it worked with Obama Care and it will work again now.

In 1988, I published a satirical piece in the New Republic called "If I Had a Hammer." It revealed that Nixon administration representatives had secretly met with leaders of the antiwar movement in a Carson City, Nev., motel back in 1970. Mr. Nixon´s people agreed to end the war in Vietnam if the antiwar people would make folk singers go away. All of them. The deal was struck; the war ended; folk singers vanished overnight. But they never turned in their guitars. For 15 years, the folk singers honored the agreement. Then, strapped for cash and just plain evil, they started to

The New York Times on Friday made a dramatic change to a report claiming New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie “knew” about lane closures on the George Washington Bridge without noting the correction. The earlier version of the report claimed (emphasis added): “The former Port Authority official who personally oversaw the lane closings on the George Washington Bridge in the scandal now swirling around Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said on Friday that the governor knew about the lane closings when they were happening, and that he had the evidence to prove it.” The updated version reads (emphasis added): The former Port Authority official

Congressional candidates and congressmen need lawyers. In D.C., law firms are often lobbying firms. That can create interesting dynamics. For instance: Rep. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., recently famous for threatening violence against a reporter, is under scrutiny for campaign finance matters. His recent campaign finance filings show he owes more than $416,000 in legal fees to a law firm (h/t Dave Levinthal). That firm happens to be K Street kingpin Patton Boggs. Grimm sits on the Financial Services Committee. The firm to which he is indebted represents Citigroup, Visa, AIG, Prudential, Goldman Sachs, and many others under his committee´s jurisdiction.

As far as I´m concerned, John Matuszak said everything there is to say about professional football back in 1979 when he was playing the role of a bent lineman in "North Dallas Forty." Matuszak, or "Tooz" as players and fans knew him, was something of a renegade individualist in the National Football League and the movie´s script gave him the opportunity to unleash a rebel yell: Embittered by his team´s tough loss, and by an assistant coach´s lame scolding, his character goes off on the coach, shouting at one point, "Every time I call it a game, you call it a

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Amid severe drought conditions, California officials announced Friday that they would not send any water from the state´s vast reservoir system to local agencies beginning this spring, an unprecedented move that affects drinking water supplies for 25 million people and irrigation for 1 million acres of farmland. The announcement marks the first time in the 54-year history of the State Water Project that such an action has been taken, but it does not mean that every farm field will turn to dust and every city tap will run dry. WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is running out of reasons to say no to Keystone XL, the proposed oil pipeline that´s long been looming over his environmental legacy. Five years after the pipeline´s backers first asked the Obama administration for approval, the project remains in limbo, stuck in a complex regulatory process that has enabled Obama to put off what will inevitably be a politically explosive decision. But the release Friday of a long-awaited government report removes a major excuse for delay, ramping up pressure on the president to make a call. Hundreds of career Justice Department lawyers have broken into open revolt against Attorney General Holder over his support of legislation that would drastically cut back on mandatory minimum sentences for drug pushers. The legislation Holder supports, known as the Durbin-Lee bill, would overturn the current mandatory minimum sentences not only for marijuana violations but for all drug offenses, including major and repeat trafficking in heroin, meth, PCP and other extremely dangerous, and often lethal, drugs. Moody´s rating agency has lowered the outlook for health insurers from stable to negative, blaming ObamaCare. Few Americans will shed tears for insurance companies. But the Moody´s announcement is a warning sign to taxpayers. They´ll be getting clobbered. Section 1342 of the Affordable Care Act forces taxpayers to make insurers whole for most of the losses incurred selling ObamaCare exchange plans through 2016. The bailout is designed to conceal the failure of the president´s signature health law until he is out of office. No one in the Obama administration talked up the advantages of bailing out insurers.
