King 50 years on
New York Post, by Editorial

Today tens of thousands of Americans gather on the National Mall to kick off the 50th anniversary celebrations of one of the most transformative events in America’s history: The March on Washington. The actual anniversary is next Wednesday, and at the original march there was a long line of speakers. But a half century later, the only words remembered are the ones uttered by a Baptist preacher named Martin Luther King Jr. King knew firsthand how bad things were for his fellow African-Americans in those days. But what lifts his words is more than his cadence: It is his confidence that America

Today, Reverend King would be more closely aligned with Alan West than any of the race hustlers.

Too bad that men like Al and Jesse corrupted his message!

As President Obama said this week: “Obviously we’ve made enormous strides. I’m a testament to it.”

Exactly.

MLK preached equality. Equal opportunity. He never meant for the stupid, dishonest and the inept to be elevated ten levels above their abilities BECAUSE of the color of their skin. Obama is a testament to everything that the government has done wrong with regard to race.

King was a perfect demagogue. He said nice things and after his speeches the looting started. In the past 50 years the number of black men in prison has skyrocketed, the quality of life of the majority of black people has declined. For every well paid black civil servant or affirmative action doctor there are thousands of guys locked up in Government cages and thousands of single mothers trying to raise children from multiple inseminators. This is disgusting.

Dennis Hastert and Dick Gephardt couldn´t stand each other when they led Congress a decade ago. But now they´ve moved to K Street, where the flood of money tends to wash over such personal differences. These days, they work hand in hand as two of Turkey´s top lobbyists, with their respective firms pocketing most of a $1.4 million annual lobbying contract. It was this business that took Hastert and Gephardt to Turkey last April, but more surprising than the odd couple´s newfound alliance was their set of travel companions: eight members of Congress on an all-expenses-paid journey overseas. We’re still weeks away from college basketball’s March championship tournament. But we’re already seeing some madness. It comes in reaction to a CNN study of the reading levels of athletes at 21 public universities. The headline over the dispatch this week says it all: “CNN Analysis: Some college athletes play like adults, read like fifth-graders.” For those familiar with college athletics — especially the sports that bring in the millions — that’s not exactly a news flash. But a researcher at the University of North Carolina, Mary Willingham, came in for particular vitriol after reporting that of 183 Tar Heel football or

For those wearing U.S. military uniform, there are few things worse than falling off a warship, unless it’s becoming stranded behind enemy lines on a battlefield. Both are scary, potentially fatal events — and something the Pentagon is trying to fix. The Defense Department announced a pair of contracts Thursday aimed at helping to rescue such lost souls. The Navy is buying what it calls “Man Overboard Indicators”— miniature radios, basically — that transmit a water-activated alarm when a sailor falls off a ship. The objective of the program “is to outfit each ship with a system capable of alerting the

According to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released this morning, the U.S. economy last month added 74,000 new payroll jobs, while the unemployment rate fell to 6.7 percent from 7.0 percent. Good news, right? Not really. Yes, the unemployment rate has fallen significantly from its high of 10 percent in October of 2009. But it turns out the unemployment rate has been falling for a pretty depressing reason: people dropping out of the labor force. Last month, 347,000 workers dropped out, effectively sending the message that it wasn’t even worth looking for work anymore. Here’s what the unemployment

“Poverty,” the New York Times announced yesterday, “is suddenly the subject of bipartisan embrace.” I have spent a lot of time parsing that sentence. There is, for example, the adverb: “suddenly” does a lot of work; it carries the weight of the entire piece on its eight letters. The condition of the working poor, after all, has been a subject of political dispute since, oh, the Industrial Revolution. The author of the Times article, Jeremy W. Peters, seems to recognize the Groundhog Day aspect of his argument when he writes, in a fine example of mixed metaphor, “To read the flurry

The anecdote has it that someone once asked Louie Armstrong what jazz was. Satchmo is reported to have something like this in response, “If you have to ask, you’ll never know.” Great answer. There are other questions we sometimes hear, the only response to which is: “If you can even ask that question, there is no answer I can give you that would satisfy or enlighten you.” One of these, and one that always pole-axes me that any sentient adult could ask, is: “Why shouldn’t women serve in combat roles in the military?” The why on this one, at least

And we don’t want more of this, because… why? From the Financial Times: America’s domestic energy revolution helped drive a decline in the US trade deficit to its lowest level in four years, bolstering calls in Washington for the Obama administration to relax decades-old restrictions on the export of crude oil. The improvement in America’s monthly trade gap – to $34.3bn in November from $39.3bn in October – prompted some economists to increase fourth-quarter US growth estimates, reinforcing confidence in the country’s economic recovery. The government’s Energy Information Administration predicted on Tuesday that the US oil boom would continue, driven by rising production

New research by the European Commission predicts that water shortages will be made worse by population growth and increased demand. Drought can have a serious economic and social impact and is thought to have cost Europe over €100billion (or £83billion) in the past three decades alone.
