Cairo - The Egyptian government acknowledged that its security forces had killed 36 Islamists in its custody Sunday, as the military leaders and the country’s Islamists vowed to keep up their fight over Egypt’s future. (Snip) While confirming the killings of the detainees on Sunday, the Ministry of the Interior said the deaths were the consequence of an escape attempt by Islamist prisoners. But officials of the main Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, described the deaths as “assassinations,” and claimed that the victims, which it said numbered 52, had been shot and tear-gassed through the windows
Comments: I would be more inclined to believe that the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist killed were doing a "mass suicide" to get sympathy for their movement. Only problem is, once the bloodletting started, it was hard to stop. As I said before, when all this is over, the victor will write "events" for the history books.
The Epyptian military realizes that dead people don´t live to fight another day. There´s no point putting them in jail because they´d break out and be back fighting the next day.. Not surprising that the Slimes would show the MB sympathy.Protecting Obama leads people down weird paths.I doubt they showed any concern about these animals burning down churches and gov´t buildings.
This is what we should have been doing to the Taliban in Afghanistan rather than work on a peace deal.
Well said, #9. the Muslim Brotherhood´s philosophy must be destroyed. It is the cancer that is consuming the whole world. Radical ideologues have stated in plain English that their goal is world domination. However, because those words are coming out of the mouths of seventh century barbarians in far away lands without a standing army, the West is apathetic. They don´t understand the focus and determination of a people committed to destroying our way of life. If the MB is spared, make no mistake, they will live to fight another day and they will come for us.
Radical Muslims, i.e. the Muslim Brotherhood, are no more trustworthy than Leftists, Democrats and "progressives." They will say anything, fabricate anything, claim anything that they think advances their cause. Like Leftists, Islamists are engaged in jihad, a holy war against unbelievers and evil ones. Truth for such people is defined as whatever helps them to prevail.
Americans would be wise to believe and to assist the Egyptian military government until or unless there is compelling evidence to the contrary. I am surprised that anyone would think of taking the claims of the Muslim Brotherhood seriously without proof.
Sometimes it seems that those who ought to be familiar with the history, nature, aims and practices of the Muslim Brotherhood are completely ignorant of such matters. This includes many American politicians and bureaucrats and journalists.
"We don´t take sides?" The latest from our faux-president. But we had darned well better take sides if we know what is good for us. The Muslim Brotherhood consists of bad people who do bad things in a bad cause. I don´t know anything about the current Egyptian government and its military leaders, but it would take some real effort and a lot of practice and determination to outdo the Brotherhood in sheer wickedness. I am therefore reasonably confident that the Egyptian military, if it is an evil at all, is decidedly the lesser of the two evils in this conflict.
What?! You mean the Egyptian military doesn´t have an Abu Graib or Gitmo to detain people for YEARS and then, when they see they´ve become peaceful Islamists, they set them free, only to shockingly discover that these same peaceful Isalmists ended back up on the battlefield to kill members of the Egyptian military.
Hmmmm, I wonder what those crazy leaders in the Egyptian military know that we don´t know? /s
What we are watching is at tutorial by muslims on how one deals with muslim terrorists. What we are also seeing is how muslim terrorists withdraw and regroup in response to a strong military response. Watch and learn.
Has John McCain scheduled his press conference regarding his planned travel to Egypt to get in the middle of their business yet?
You have to respect the Egyptian Army and Police for taking on the MB, even attacking them in their mosques while the MB are firing from within. Too bad the US never treated mosques the same way in Iraq and Afghanistan - yeah, that bought us alot of respect.
It´s a no brainer. Think of all the islamic warring fanatics as Nazis or Stalinist soviet communist terrorist killers. Take no prisoners. As long as they´re alive, they will kill again. Any questions about this idological supremacist world conquering jihad of a killing disease, posing as a supposed religion? All communists here in America suffer the same religious fanatacism except, here in America, they operate under cover of stealth. Why else would they not recognise themselves in the acts of world jihadist crime? Diane Sawyers, so much of Congress, cannot see the evil of jihad because it so exactly resembles their own communistic fanaticism of, their oath to violent control.
For once in his questionable life, Obie Won is doing the right thing by staying on the golf course and watching muslims die. Maybe he could extend his vacation for a few more years and solve all of the world´s problems.
Let´s see, who was imposing Islamic law by force on the Egyptian people, the current government or the Morsi/Muslim Brotherhood government? Right. Muslim Brotherhood. And who has been murdering Christians just because they are Christian? Current Egyptian government or the Muslim Brotherhood? Right again, the Muslim Brotherhood. And who has been burning Christian churches? Muslim Brotherhood. And who is the sworn enemy of every Jew on the face of the earth? You got it. Muslim Brotherhood. And who has the most radical of the totalitarian American left aligned itself with? Muslim Brotherhood.
The Egyptian government says it was a failed escape attempt. The Muslim Brotherhood says it was assassination. So ... who to believe? Does anyone really need to ask? [hint: the NYT goes with the MB story. That alone should tell you something.]
The world wonders whom to root for? Not the civilized world. The Muslim Brotherhood needs to learn the lesson of the Mahdi. They need to be liquidated to begin the process of restoring order to a region that needs a reminder every couple of generations...and these cats are overdue.
Obama has not been told yet that the MB is slaughtering Coptic Christians. He is usually a month late and a Trillion $ short. He is the last person to know any news ( so the WH says ) and when he learns about it, he heads straight to the golf course to ponder for 18 holes. The so-called leader of the free World is likely the most useless person in the Whole World, except he is terrific at blaming others. He personally gave the speech in Cairo in 2008 that likely set off this wave of Mid-East violence, in my opinion. How many people have died because of HIS ideology ?
Meanwhile, around the same time this alleged episode ("Egypt Security Kills 36 Held in Its Custody") took place, militant Islamists executed a similar number of off-duty Egyptian policemen after hijacking their bus, somewhere in the Sinai.
Sounds as if the Egyptian security forces are having to fight fire with fire.
I know whom to root for in this war. It isn´t the Islamists.
A porn performer who tested positive for HIV in Los Angeles is asking for privacy as the industry tries to determine the scope of the problem. "The performer deserves privacy and dignity at this difficult time, and we ask that our colleagues and the media respect the performer’s wishes for privacy unless he or she wishes to speak," the Free Speech Coalition, a porn industry trade group, said in a statement. The Free Speech Coalition said it was working to identify anyone who had sex with the infected performer. “We take the health of our performers very seriously and felt
In China on Thursday, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. spoke plainly about the role of a free press in a democratic society. “Innovation thrives where people breathe freely, speak freely, are able to challenge orthodoxy, where newspapers can report the truth without fear of consequences,” he said in an address to American businesspeople living and working there. He was speaking against the backdrop of China’s restrictive policies on reporting by foreign news organizations; the Chinese government has so far declined to renew the visas of nearly two dozen reporters from The New York Times and Bloomberg News as a consequence
Jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided not to attend a memorial service for Nelson Mandela this week because it is too expensive to travel to South Africa, Israeli media reported on Sunday. Netanyahu had notified the South African authorities that he would fly in but cancelled his plans at the last minute due to the costs involved -- around 7.0 million shekels ($2 million) for his transport and security alone, pubic radio and the Haaretz daily reported. "The decision was made in light of the high transportation costs resulting from the short notice of the trip and the security required for the prime minister
New Orleans - Things traditionally get started a little late down here, an inclination that runs from mealtimes to political races. But with nearly a year to go before the 2014 election, it is already open season on Senator Mary L. Landrieu, Democrat of Louisiana. (Snip) As Democrats look across the rest of the South, the outlook does not get much better. Ms. Landrieu, along with Senators Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Kay Hagan of North Carolina, is pretty much all that is left of Southern Democrats in the Senate. All three are up for re-election next year. And the outcome of their races could determine whether the Southern Democrat,
Even as five regulatory agencies prepared to vote Tuesday on a regulation that seeks to rein in risk-taking on Wall Street — an effort known as the Volcker Rule — lawyers and lobbyists were gearing up for another round of attacks against it. (Snip) The groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, are hinting that they could use litigation to either undercut or clarify the rule, which is intended to bar banks from trading for their own gain and limit their ability to invest in hedge funds. The rule, a cornerstone of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act and a barometer for the overall strength of the regulatory overhaul, is aimed at
Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed on a cooperation pact with Iran, despite continuing to resist signing a security agreement with the U.S., Reuters reported. Karzai made the deal with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran Sunday. (Snip) Rouhani said Sunday his country opposes the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan and the region, saying their presence generates tension, the official IRNA news agency reported. IRNA quoted Rouhani as telling Karzai: "We believe that all foreign forces should leave the region and that the security of Afghanistan should be handed over to people of the country."
US Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated on Sunday that Israel will be safer the day the recently-reached deal on Iran´s nuclear issue is implemented. Kerry, addressing the Brookings Institution´s annual Saban Forum, recognized Israel´s concern over Tehran´s disputed nuclear ambitions, saying the possibility of a weaponized nuclear Iran stood as an existential threat to Israel. "We will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon. Period. Not now, not ever," he said.
Los Angeles - The California health exchange says it´s been giving the names of tens of thousands of consumers to insurance agents without their permission or knowledge in an effort to hit deadlines for coverage. (Snip) Officials with Covered California, the exchange set up in response to the federal health law, said they began providing names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses if available this week in a pilot program. They said they thought it would help people meet a Dec. 23 deadline to have health insurance in place by Jan. 1. The state doesn´t know exactly how many people
The “feminist nightmare” is recurring. Unbowed by Politico labeling her with this epithet a couple of weeks ago, Michelle Obama continues to do what her critics regard as frightening behaviors. Last week, she assaulted independent women by showing off the White House Christmas decorations. “Our goal is for every room and every tree to tell a story,” she explained to an audience of military families in the East Room, where her two-tone gray dress matched the silver ornaments on the trees. She spoke of Christmas trees made from stacks of books (“they’re very cool!”) and described the “first dog display”
Anyone who’s ever gone on a diet is told to lay off the booze because it’s high in calories. And that, of course, must make it very fattening indeed. Go onto the NHS Direct website, and you’ll be told a glass of wine contains as many calories as a slice of cake. Or if you prefer beer, the British Nutrition Foundation reminds you two pints are roughly the equivalent in calories to a full glass of single cream. So you may be surprised to learn that there’s no scientific evidence whatsoever to support the idea that alcohol makes you on weight. That’s hugely counter-intuitive, I know, because alcohol certainly is said to contain lots of calories.
President Barack Obama sounded a nostalgic personal note Sunday night and offered a rare self-assessment while criticizing congressional Republicans as an "impediment" to governing during the start of a West Coast fundraising tour for the Democratic Party. Obama told donors the sight of Mt. Rainier illuminated by a setting sun was particularly special because it reminded him of his mother, who attended high school in the Seattle area. "I feel the spirit of my mom," he said. He also attempted to contrast himself with Republicans who control the House of Representatives, saying they are "more focused on positioning themselves for
Los Angeles - Rather than thanking a list of friends and colleagues, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis used their American Music Awards acceptance speech to send a message of tolerance on Sunday night. Ben Haggerty, the rapper known as Macklemore, accepted the award for favorite rap/hip-hop album, then quoted Martin Luther King Jr. in a live satellite feed from the rap group´s latest tour stop. "Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it," he said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a last minute decision not to participate in a memorial service for the late South African President Nelson Mandela, despite having notified the South African government that he would attend the event. The decision was made in light of the high transportation costs resulting from the short notice of the trip and the security required for the prime minister in Johannesburg. The Prime Minister’s Office found that the trip would have cost roughly 7 million shekels ($2.4 million) – 2.8 million shekels for chartering a private El Al plane and a further 3.2 million shekels for
President Obama, former president George W. Bush and their wives departed Washington Monday morning on Air Force One on their way to a memorial service in South Africa for Nelson Mandela. The president and first lady Michelle Obama are being accompanied by Mr. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on the flight to Johannesburg. A four-hour memorial service will be held on Tuesday for South Africa’s first black president. Mr. Mandela, the anti-apartheid revolutionary, died on Thursday at age 95. Former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea are traveling separately to South Africa. Former President
President Obama will make remarks on Nelson Mandela´s legacy during a memorial service Tuesday for the late South African freedom fighter, officials said Monday. "We do expect President Obama to speak as part of the program," said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications. The president and first lady Michelle Obama departed Monday for Johannesburg, where a Mandela memorial service will be held in a soccer stadium. Obama, who will also spend time with the Mandela family, is not scheduled to hold any bilateral meetings with foreign leaders while in South Africa, Rhodes said. Rhodes also said the
All three networks on Monday morning highlighted the appearance of the Obamas at the Kennedy Center Honors, but only ABC fawned over "fashion win" of First Lady. Lara Spencer enthused that " one of the stars of the show was Michelle Obama." An excited Spencer explained that Mrs. Obama looked "absolutely ravishing in a flowing teal gown as she accompanied President Obama." The co-host declared, "Another big fashion win for the First Lady. CBS This Morning offered a full report on the various performers who were honored, but co-anchor Charlie Rose avoided ABC´s superlatives.
