The only surprise here is the source. The details are all too familiar: Employers around the country, from fast-food franchises to colleges, have told NBC News that they will be cutting workers’ hours below 30 a week because they can’t afford to offer the health insurance mandated by the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. “To tell somebody that you’ve got to decrease their hours because of a law passed in Washington is very frustrating to me,” said Loren Goodridge, who owns 21 Subway franchises, including a restaurant in Kennebunk. “I know the impact I’m having on some of
Comments: Why did NBC suddenly wake up?? They could have continued ignoring this as they always have. You always have to question their ulterior motive. Those low info voters who watch these frauds are going to get a real shock when they find out their insurance isn´t going to be "free."
Obama and the Democrats badly want the effects of Obama care not to hit people until after the elections. But businesses are already cutting hours, because they cannot afford the health care. And that’s mostly hit’s the low income workers who can least afford not to be able to work. So those workers will be working two jobs, and still have no healthcare. This whole Obama care needs to be rescinded. It does not matter how often you tell people you can’t get anything without it cost either you or someone else, they don‘t believe it until it slapped him upside the head him. And frankly the someone else’s in this country do not want to pay for their freebies any longer.
If there are only so many jobs, and no more can be created because society has hit the energy wall because of progressive policies, then the only way to "empower" more people is to "split" jobs. What was a job for one person is now a job for two part time people. And progressives can feel good about themselves.
If N B C were smart, they would interview the companies across America that this will hurt. But, then again, this story is a surprise from them.
I am really angry that those that have the opportunity and the power to save US from this monstrosity only cared enough to make sure the staffers, who aren´t exactly making minimum wage, were assisted in paying the premiums.
My daughter has a friend who is expecting her first baby near the end of the year. Her employer has just informed everyone that their health insurance will be dropped at the end of the year. She has asked her obstetrition if he could induce labor before her insurance runs out. The sad part is that the doctor said that she is not the first patient to ask that question.
Maybe NBC finally woke up, OP, because even the die-hard left-wingers there have relatives out in fly-over land.
#8, please don´t be offended, but actually it´s "obstetrician." I seem to recall that a pregnancy is covered, even if the coverage is lost, because the condition/conception occurred when the policy is in force. A co-worker left her job, but was still covered for that pregnancy.
Younger people are probably being hardest hit by this but it could also be contributing to Obama´s phony new jobs claims. If the new jobs are subsidizing the other people who´ve been cut back, they really aren´t new jobs.
There are too many Obama policies that (somehow) reduce income, reduce jobs, reduce hours of employment. I doubt that it is accidental. I think the calculation is that all misery can be blamed on rich people and "the Jews."
Some few are plotting and planning to provoke revolution. The wise among us are preparing for revolution, while resisting it at every step.
AND...this is happening in spite of the fact that Obama has suspended the Employer mandate.
If you owned a Company with over one hundred Employees would you risk a possible million dollar fine if somehow it was proven that the President could NOT legally deny what the LAW says these employees are entitled to receive ?
Reality bites. Now it is all about the employer issues and higher premiums. Wait until the problem is about the quality of patient care and long waits to get an appointment for procedures like a hip or knee replacement. Then the real squealing will begin. However, it will be too late. The best health care system in the world will be destroyed and 30 million people will still be uninsured. This progressive dream is the American nightmare.
Since I am convinced that there is NO chance NBC is actually doing its purported job of reporting the news, all this means is this: The Marxist-Socialist dictatorship running the US---for whom zero serves as the equivalent of a lawn jockey in front of a sporting house---has decided to push now for single payer. Therefore O-Don´tCare must be run up onto the rocks sooner than previously planned. They must be afraid that there is some slim possibility there could be an honest election result in 2014. I disagree.
So now that some unions have complained, they´ll get a waiver from the ACA, which isn´t "affordable" at all, to anybody.
And now, Congressional staffers are exempt, too.
By the time this all shakes down, unless this law is repealed, the ONLY people who will be burdened by this law will be small businesses, middle-class individuals and conservatives. If you think this isn´t deliberate, think again.
This has all been known to be one of many consequences long before Nasty Pelosi said that we have to pass the bill to find out what is in it. The stench of complicity engulfs the Dems and their media/academic allies in this. That it is by design to enable a soft slow-motion coup d´etat makes the stench even worse. The cherry on the top of this is the fraudulent, illegal administration implementing this.
A voice in the wilderness here. I don´t think single payer can be achieved in the United States. Patients will be forced to see doctors they can´t choose, and then after long waits. Doctors will be forced to do mandated procedures in mandated situations, and forbidden from doing procedures in other situations. Providers will increasingly consist of the incompetent and the unmotivated, protected by strong unions.
America is about choice. Single payer is about taking choice away. If Obamacare doesn´t work, it will look like the Mayo Clinic next to single payer.
I disagree #19. I think this whole Obamacare law was deliberately written to be unenforceable, causing mass confusion and bankruptcies, leading to the federal government single payer plan exactly like the rest of the developed countries. There will be rationing, shortages of qualified doctors and nurses, but once installed it will be too late. I hope I am wrong.
But single payer has been the goal all along. Obamacare is just the sledgehammer being used to eliminate private health insurers so the only remaining alternative will be socialized medicine. Just ask Harry Reid. He´ll tell ´ya all about it.
Another action that is coming down the pike is the decades old shouting by dims that all of this will be paid for by "taxing the rich". I don´t know how many times I´ve heard that statement. And the lo-fo´s don´t have a clue about how and where "the rich" keep their money and holdings. They don´t know how an economy works. It´s all about the freebies. And you can bet the farm that dims are going to beat that dead horse!
Obamacare is now being seen as the biggest mess ever perpetrated on the American people. Especially by an incompetent Community Organizer. Look for the Administration to start referring to the program as Bushcare. There, that will absolve any and all Democrats from blame and confuse people about the new name. Perhaps Marxicare would be more appropriate.
In other news today, a rodeo clown wore a George H W Bush mask in 1994 without complaint. People then considered that to be good fun. I say the Obama mask was too close to the truth to be taken lightly by the current crop of race terrorists.
Laughable and classic projection that the Lefist WH would dismiss NBC´s findings as ´´anecdotal.´´ Anecdotes --- the triumph of individual ´´stories´´ over inconvenient stats policy failures and reality --- are the hallmark of the Leftist playbook, promoting their policies with emotional anecdotal heroes from Jane Doe in Roe v Wade to Sandra Fluke to their crowning fictional 2012 campaign concoction, The Life of Julia. We thought you loved anecdotes, Lefties, or was that just their use in manipulating the LoFos???
As many here have stated, single payer has always been the end game and unfortunately it will succeed.
Our employees were notified back in 2009 that their health coverage as they know it will be in jeopardy if the ACA passes. As an employer we will have 2 options. Cut back hours to under 30/week to avoid providing coverage (very difficult to do if you have a conscience) or do not provide coverage and pay the penalty.
Insurance companies will be driven from the market because their premiums will necessarily skyrocket in order to cover the new risks of no preexisting conditions, no limits on coverage, mandatory low deductibles, etc...
The penalty by sending all employees to the government exchanges will be the less expensive route, and voila!, a single payer system.
The only reason the msm is starting to come around to our way of thinking is because their ratings are dropping. Money talks, no? Don´t believe for a minute that there is an awakening from the left. Just a change in reporting out of convenience.
"If you like your doctor, or your insurance carrier, you can keep them." Or words to that effect. Who said that anyway? s/o I´m beginning to have some Obama supporters tell me that I told them things like this were going to happen, but they didn´t want to believe me. Just start checking out Lucianne for a while, I tell them, to learn what´s going on.
President Obama has recalled John Podesta to work at the White House as a “counselor.” Podesta is the Clinton hand who founded the far-left Center for American Progress (home of the clownish Think Progress blog). Podesta’s appointment, which needs no congressional approval, comes at a time when Obama is already making moves to do without Congress. He has used executive actions to re-write Obamacare, and to recalibrate immigration law, both in ways that just happen to favor either himself or the Democrats. The New York Times reports that Podesta will work on executive actions when he returns to the White
On CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday, new host Brian Stelter turned to President Obama the press critic. At the end of his cakewalk “Hardball” interview last week, Obama called out the media for being divisive. “The American people are good and they are decent. And yes, we get very divided partly because our politics and our media specifically tries to divide them and splinter them.” Stelter asked a decent question about whether that was an odd statement to make on divisive MSNBC. NPR television critic Eric Deggans shot that down, insisting MSNBC was a “great place” to attack cable news
Former CIA Director Leon Panetta revealed classified information at a 2011 awards ceremony attended by Zero Dark Thirty filmmaker Mark Boal, according to documents obtained by the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch. The CIA allowed Boal, the screenwriter of Zero Dark Thirty, to attend a June 24, 2011 award ceremony celebrating the successful raid on Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan that May. A transcript of Panetta’s speech that night obtained by Judicial Watch is labeled “top secret,” and significant portions of it are redacted. At the conclusion his speech, Panetta told the audience, “You have made me proud
UPDATE: Rep. Paul Ryan and Sen. Patty Murray unveiled a budget proposal Tuesday night. The proposal, which has yet to be voted on, busts through sequester caps, setting FY 2014 spending at $1.014 trillion — billions beyond the levels mandated by sequester. The proposal contains no mention of pension reform. Conservatives had better start paying attention to the budget battle raging in Washington: If things go south — and they are poised to do just that — the tea party’s single greatest policy victory, the sequester, could be destroyed. And worse yet, it could be destroyed in exchange for nothing. The sequester
Approval of ObamaCare in the United States has risen eight percentage points in the last month, according to a new poll. Thirty-nine percent of people now approve of the law, according to a CBS News/New York Times poll released Tuesday evening. Half of the public, by contrast, disapproves of ObamaCare, the poll found. Nearly 60 percent say they don’t think the sign-up process for ObamaCare is going well, but more than one-third say it’s improving. These figures come in just ten days after the administration touted the repaired federal portal for the insurance, HealthCare.gov. Obama’s general job approval rating has increased to 42 percent,
Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), in an appearance on MSNBC´s "PoliticsNation" on Friday, condemned former Sen. Rick Santorum´s comments comparing Nelson Mandela´s fight against apartheid to the fight against Obamacare as "shameful." "And actually if I was going to make a comparison, I would make the opposite comparison, because I think the struggle for justice, which Nelson Mandela led for so many years is similar as the struggle for the health care as a right for people in the richest country in the world, and so the idea that they would make that comparison in the opposite way is just tragic,"
According to a new Rasmussen Report, the majority of Americans do not believe the deportation of illegal immigrants living in the United States is aggressive enough. More than 20 House Democrats last week urged President Obama to halt the deportation of illegal immigrants until Congress passes a comprehensive immigration reform plan, but voters by a two-to-one margin oppose that idea. Most already think the federal government is not vigilant enough in deporting those who are in this country illegally. Only 29% of Likely U.S. Voters think the government should stop deporting illegal immigrants until Congress passes an immigration reform plan.
Twitchy, the conservative Twitter aggregation site, has been sold for an undisclosed amount to Salem Communications, the Christian radio conglomerate and owners of Hotair.com and Townhall.com. Jonathan Garthwaite, general manager and editor-in-chief of Townhall.com, confirmed the news to BuzzFeed Tuesday, saying he was “excited” to be folding Twitchy into existing Salem news properties. “Media Matters types would like to paint conservatives as boring, old white guys,” Garthwaite said. “Twitchy adds more fun and humor to our platform, which will appeal to totally different generation and break that stereotype.” Launched in March 2012, Twitchy was the brainchild of conservative author and
In a visit to NR’s New York office, Senator Ron Johnson said the fight against Obamacare is entering a new phase: “We’ve got to start talking about transitioning.” Johnson won his Senate seat in 2010 based in large part on his fierce opposition to Obamacare, which he still adamantly opposes as an assault on Americans’ liberty and criticizes in the harshest terms (look no further than his recent weekly radio address). But simple repeal is no longer enough, he believes. He says that Republicans have to acknowledge that the law now exists. “How do you repeal?” he asks. “Yeah, you
President Obama´s appointment of Democratic adviser John Podesta, an opponent of the Keystone XL oil sands pipeline, to the White House could foretell a rejection of the controversial Canada-to-Texas pipeline, environmental groups said Tuesday. Podesta, former President Bill Clinton´s chief of staff and the man who headed Obama´s transition team, is leaving the top post of the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank, for a new White House role focusing on climate change. Obama has vowed to lead an active White House on the issue — the president said in June he would rely on his executive authority to
President Obama is still holding back on firing anyone for the disastrous first two months of the Obamacare roll-out and instead is adding key staff to help steer a smoother course next year. While critics are still calling for heads to roll, some Republicans say Obama´s decision to bring in two well-known Washington players to help right the ship shows he´s serious about shaking up his second-term strategy and execution. Senators on both sides of the aisle are praising the prospect of Obama tapping veteran Democratic strategist John Podesta, a former chief of staff for President Bill Clinton. This week,
MSNBC anchor and NBC News political director and chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd lashed out at Fox News for what he described as "pandering to an audience" over their coverage of President Obama´s enthusiastic handshake with Cuban dictator Raul Castro at Tuesday´s memorial service for Nelson Mandela. Chuck Todd ? @chucktodd Follow Really? An entire segment on a handshake? Good grief; pandering to an audience 10:37 AM - 10 Dec 2013 The irony of an MSNBC anchor accusing another network of pandering to their audience requires no explanation. Todd joins CNN, Politico´s Dylan Byers, and a number of other
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
President Obama, former president George W. Bush and their wives departed Washington Monday morning on Air Force One on their way to a memorial service in South Africa for Nelson Mandela. The president and first lady Michelle Obama are being accompanied by Mr. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on the flight to Johannesburg. A four-hour memorial service will be held on Tuesday for South Africa’s first black president. Mr. Mandela, the anti-apartheid revolutionary, died on Thursday at age 95. Former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea are traveling separately to South Africa. Former President
President Obama will make remarks on Nelson Mandela´s legacy during a memorial service Tuesday for the late South African freedom fighter, officials said Monday. "We do expect President Obama to speak as part of the program," said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications. The president and first lady Michelle Obama departed Monday for Johannesburg, where a Mandela memorial service will be held in a soccer stadium. Obama, who will also spend time with the Mandela family, is not scheduled to hold any bilateral meetings with foreign leaders while in South Africa, Rhodes said. Rhodes also said the
Barack Obama has arrived in South Africa to lead the American delegation at a memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. But his party is reportedly stuck in traffic and he is said to have arrived late at the stadium for the ceremony. [Snip] But Mr Clinton, Mr Carter and his wife Rosalynn have all traveled separately to the event. All three networks on Monday morning highlighted the appearance of the Obamas at the Kennedy Center Honors, but only ABC fawned over "fashion win" of First Lady. Lara Spencer enthused that " one of the stars of the show was Michelle Obama." An excited Spencer explained that Mrs. Obama looked "absolutely ravishing in a flowing teal gown as she accompanied President Obama." The co-host declared, "Another big fashion win for the First Lady. CBS This Morning offered a full report on the various performers who were honored, but co-anchor Charlie Rose avoided ABC´s superlatives.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell believes the United States should have a socialized, single-payer healthcare system similar to those in Canada and Europe. “I think universal health care is one of the things we should really be focused on, and I hope that will happen,” Powell reportedly said last week. “Whether it’s Obamacare, or son of Obamacare, I don’t care. As long as we get it done.” The Puget Sound Business Journal reported Powell´s remarks at the Prostate Cancer Survivors Celebration Breakfast at the University of Washington´s Cancer Research Center. Powell, the Republican who supported Barack Obama during the last two presidential
Say goodbye to the 60-watt incandescent bulb. This year manufacturers started phasing out 100w and 75w bulbs. On January 1 it will become illegal to import or manufacture traditional 60w and 40w bulbs too. Time to stock up? Not so fast. First, check out Cree’s energy-sipping new 75-watt replacement bulb. I used to be outraged over the federal government’s draconian moves to outlaw traditional lightbulbs. For 100 years we’ve lived and thrived under the warm glow of incandescent lightbulbs. Aside from the fact that 90% of the electricity used by the bulbs is radiated in the form of heat rather than
