NYT: No spying on
Americans? Au contraire

Hot Air, by Ed Morrissey

On Tuesday, Barack Obama insisted that the US government isn’t spying on Americans by surveilling the contents of their communications. Less than two days later, the New York Times makes hash of that claim. The NSA, reports Charlie Savage, sifts through the content of “vast amounts” of electronic communications between Americans and people abroad in their search for links to terrorism, and not just the metadata: The National Security Agency is searching the contents of vast amounts of Americans’ e-mail and text communications into and out of the country, hunting for people who mention information about foreigners

NYT just got out of sync with Obama. That will happen from time to time. Even the best dancers err.

The rule is "It isn´t lying when Obama says it".

NYT just now figured out that their ISP is required to maintain a data base of all emails and websites for some minimum amount of time.

Hope everybody else figured that out too. NSA doesn´t really need to keep these records or copies ~ they just ask the FCC regulated entities for one when they figure out they need it ~ probably even have a warrant for it too

People who don´t want to have their email read need to use some other form of communication, like I do, plus, heavy encryption!

Cantor takes mission impossible

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) is taking the lead on crafting the GOP’s Obama-Care replacement proposal. The extraordinarily tough task faces many obstacles and is complicated by election-year politics and an unruly GOP conference. But Cantor believes the Republicans must shake their “party of no” reputation, and passing an ObamaCare replacement bill is part of that strategy. Most, if not all, Democrats will reject whatever Cantor produces. To pass a bill through the House, Republicans will need to keep defections to about 20 or fewer. That will be a tall order. For years, Republicans have promised a “repeal and replace” strategy on ObamaCare,

Score one for the fish. The crime scene of a break-in at a Rochester´s Hooked on Fishing shop showed evidence that a burglar got scared off by a motion-activated, singing bass, authorities said. The novelty bass, which had been hung near the door and would start singing "Take Me to the River" whenever someone entered the shop, was found on the floor after the intruder knocked it down as part of breaking the door to get in, according to the Olmsted County Sheriff´s Office. But the intruder appeared to have left in a hurry, without stealing anything -- not tackle nor cash that

After decades of entertaining Las Vegas tourists, Siegfried and Roy appear to be taking it easy, after a freak accident with a tiger forced them to slow down. It has been just over ten years since one of the famed entertainers´ white tigers dragged Roy off stage in the Mirage. Roy, 69, who was left seriously injured after being grabbed by the throat during a live performance in 2003, was pictured Wednesday soaking up the scenery from his wheelchair in a Hawaii resort. His on-stage partner Siegfried also appeared to be slowing down after years in the limelight, as the 74-year-old strolled

The gambling industry around the world is huge, but the biggest market is the United States, where gamblers lost a staggering $119 billion in 2013:(Snip for chart)That´s a crazy amount of money; more money than Bill Gates has (with $72 billion) or Warren Buffett (with $58 billion), and only $11 billion less than the two men put together. What intrigues me is the question of why so many people gamble. After all, everyone knows that the odds are stacked against gamblers, whether they´re betting on slot machines, horse racing, football, roulette, bingo, or lotteries. Prosecutors accuse Suleman, whose claim to fame is giving birth to eight babies in one day, of not reporting that she was making thousands of dollars as topless dancer and adult film actress when she applied for government aid last year. An additional charge filed Wednesday alleges that she received nearly $10,000 in MediCal benefits she was not entitled to, the Los Angeles County district attorney´s office said. The spin machine sprang into action in the wake of the Congressional Budget Office’s new report on the economy and ObamaCare. While the White House (and their press agents at the New York Times who ran the headline “Freeing Workers from the Insurance Trap” and described the law’s “liberating” impact) tried to portray projections of job losses stemming from ObamaCare as good news for those lucky people who will no longer have to put up with the drudgery of – for example, working – to win health care insurance, the GOP saw it otherwise, and rightly so. PHILADELPHIA -- Dave Dixon and his wife are bunking with friends after losing power in a snow-and-ice storm that caused more than a million U.S. outages - the vast majority of them in a single state, Pennsylvania. The storm has long since cleared out, but its effects are expected to linger for days as utility crews work feverishly to restore power to hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania residents left in the dark and cold. One official likened the damage to what you´d expect to see from a hurricane. "People are going to have to have some patience at this point," Pennsylvania Gov.

Affordable power dissolves liberal fantasies. White House wise men insist on spending the public’s money to promote retro power plants such as windmills, which went out of fashion with the Industrial Revolution. Eliminating the Keystone XL Pipeline, which would take cheap crude from the oil sands of Canada down to the Gulf Coast of Texas, is nevertheless a liberal priority. President Obama, whose passion is basketball, has employed the “four corners” strategy he picked up in his days shooting hoops in junior high school to stall on energy, and particularly the pipeline. In the early days of basketball, before the slam dunk became

In his State of the Union address delivered last week, President Obama talked at length about domestic issues--income inequality, health care, jobs and education. Foreign policy issues, including the continuing war in Afghanistan, the crisis in Syria, and talks over Iran’s nuclear program were given lip service at the end of his speech. One of the reasons for this is that Americans have grown tired of a decade of endless war—and domestic policy matters much more to voters than foreign policy. But a careful read of Obama’s speech shows that the only firm promise he made was not to send troops

The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law. Of course, Republicans immediately tried to brand the findings as “devastating” and stark evidence of President Obama’s health care reform as a failure and a job killer. It is no such thing. (SNIP) The new law will free people, young and old, to pursue careers or retirement without having to worry about health coverage.

The Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, became law almost four years ago. It became operational last Oct. 1. Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2014, the ACA may well have been dealt its death blow. The Congressional Budget Office released a major study of the government’s budget and its effect on the overall economy over the next 10 years. In dull bureaucratic language, it delivers a devastating analysis of the inefficiencies, ineffectualities and problematic social costs of ObamaCare. The one-two punch: Virtually as many Americans will lack health coverage in 10 years as before the law was passed — but 2 million fewer

House committees are still digging into the IRS political targeting scandal, and based on a hearing Wednesday there´s more to learn. The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. The White House and congressional Democrats tried to limit the fallout Wednesday from the politically damaging conclusion in a Congressional Budget Office report that the Obamacare entitlement creates a major incentive for some people not to work. While some critics focused on a finding by the CBO that Obamacare will result in 2.5 million fewer workers over a decade, conservatives said the bigger fundamental issue highlighted in the report is one familiar to the welfare state — that taxpayer-funded government subsidies provide disincentives for full-time work. “People used to be stuck in jobs because they needed the health insurance,” said
