Navy drops plans to repair
fire-damaged USS Miami sub

Fox News, by Staff*

The Navy has decided that it will not repair the nuclear-powered submarine USS Miami after concluding that the cost of repairing damage from a fire set by a civilian worker is more than it can afford due to mandated budget cuts. The decision to scrap the Groton, Conn.-based sub comes after a damage assessment by the Navy found that estimated repair costs, originally estimated to be about $450 million, have risen dramatically, a Navy official told The Military Times. Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge, director of undersea warfare, said Tuesday that repairing the submarine

Very sad. The greatest navy ever has to lose a boat because of sequestration brought on by a Islamo-Marxist stooge from Kenya and a brainless POS who just didn´t want to work that day... union guy, I´m sure. The Russians and Chinese are likely splitting their guts laughing.

The numbers don´t add up - $450,000,000 to repair a minor fire?

And why even bother on a 23yo sub?

Sounds like what happens when repairs on a car are higher than the remaining value - even a minor bash becomes a "total".

$450,000,000??????

Its $450 mil #1, because of alllll the hands sticking out to get a piece of the DOD contracting pie. That sub won´t be repaired by Navy hands, it will be hundreds of union stooges and layers of sub-contractors (with bloated prices for parts).

Where do you think so many retired flag rank officers go upon leaving the Pentagon??? Aquisitions/contracting/ etc...they set this system up while in uniform, then lap up the gravy upon retirement...

It´s one less submarine that obama will have to put in permanent drydock in his "neuter the US military" plan.

1 & 2,

A. The fire was quite serious.
B. Work on Subs is very expensive because need for "zero defects".
C. Because the Navy wasn´t able to immediately begin repair work, additional damage has occurred due to environmental exposure.

Now, I not saying there isn´t a problem with government procurement, there is, but there are some mitigating circumstances on this. Ultimately its bad that the USS Miami won´t be repaired.

The names of the six-member jury panel that acquitted George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin have been made public for the first time, after a new court order, records show. Circuit Judge Debra Nelson, who had previously ordered the jurors´ identifying information be kept confidential, granted access to the names in a ruling March 21. Zimmerman´s defense asked the judge in June to keep the names secret until six months after the verdict. President Barack Obama, his wife and the first daughters may have to cut their latest vacation short because of Russia’s meddling in Ukraine. The Obama family’s current plan for the weekend is to escape the cold, snowy doldrums of Washington, D.C. for some rest and relaxation in sunny Key Largo, Fla., reports the Daily Mail. However, despite Obama’s earnest invocations of international law, pro-Russian forces and the Russian government are making swift military and political moves in Ukraine’s Crimea region. Senators blocked President Obama’s nominee to lead the Justice Department’s civil rights division Wednesday in a bipartisan filibuster, with opponents saying his history defending a convicted cop-killer in the Supreme Court made him a poor choice. The defeat of Debo P. Adegbile, who as an attorney for the NAACP backed appeals by former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal, is a major blow to Mr. Obama. Democrats changed the rules last year to overcome filibusters with just 50 votes, but Majority Leader Harry Reid couldn’t even muster all of his own troops Wednesday.

President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway. Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it´s unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia´s calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West. "Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing," Obama declared Friday

The son of the Nevada rancher locked in an increasingly tense land dispute with the federal government, says their cowboys managed to break a blockade and retrieve around 30 head of cattle. The heavily-armed federal agents, equipped with eight helicopters and backed-up by snipers, surrounded the Bundy ranch after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) attained a federal court order to confiscate the family´s herd. Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. Legislatures are in a far better position than judges to assess the
