Report: Emails show Ron Paul

Iowa senator’s endorsement

Former presidential candidate Ron Paul’s campaign negotiated to purchase the endorsement of an Iowa state senator who had previously endorsed Rep. Michelle Bachmann, R-Minn., according to emails obtained by Opensecrets.org. “In an Oct. 29, 2011 email, a representative of Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson, a Republican, asks the Paul campaign to provide Sorenson with $8,000 per month in salary for him, $5,000 per month in salary for a Sorenson ally, as well as $100,000 in contributions for a newly created PAC that Sorenson planned to use to support conservative candidates for Iowa state office,” Opensecrets.org explained.

Once a savior to his Crescent City, Ray Nagin has dug himself a disgraceful hole and exposed himself as a greedy and corrupt failure. After barely six hours of deliberation on Wednesday, a jury convicted former New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin on all but one of the 21-count indictment for bribery, money-laundering and failure to report income to the IRS. A subdued Nagin, who remains free on bond, maintained his innocence in brief comments to reporters, while his attorney Robert Jenkins said that they planned to appeal. He faces a prison term of at least 21 years. In a trial that matched the

A PAC called 21st Century Democrats has raised $5.3 million since 2009, but not a penny of it has gone to candidates´ campaigns or independent expenditures on their behalf, according to Federal Election Commission records. That makes 21st Century Democrats one of the largest, yet least effective, independent political action committees in the country. The fly-by-night group has tried to represent itself as something more official by presenting a list of respected Democrats as its "advisory board," complete with fabricated quotes, when they hadn´t even heard of the organization, the Washington Examiner found. 21st Century says it was founded by

A majority of voters would support former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, but Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) has surged ahead among Republican challengers, trailing Mrs. Clinton by single digits, a McClatchy-Marist Poll released Wednesday found. In a Clinton-Ryan matchup, 52% favored Mrs. Clinton while 44% backed Mr. Ryan, who was the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee. The poll showed the gap has narrowed from 53%-40% in December. Support for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was considered the Republican frontrunner until a January controversy over lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, has dropped

DOJ Voting Section attorney Bradley Heard was in the courtroom of federal judge Eric Melgren today. Heard was trying to persuade Melgren that Kansas can’t ensure that foreigners aren’t registering to vote in Kansas. Things didn’t go so well for Mr. Heard, which is surprising because he is a “Voting Rights Gladiator.” A what? That’s right — according to Bradley Heard’s own Twitter account, he is a “Voting Rights Gladiator” in addition to being an “Outside Agitator.” What is most curious about Mr. Heard’s Twitter feed is how much official business he discusses. Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel, who was released from prison last year after he was granted a new trial in the 1975 slaying of a neighbor, has received approval to have a GPS tracking device temporarily relocated from his ankle while he attends his son´s ski competition. During an earlier ski competition this month, Skakel was unable to accompany his son up the mountain with other parents because his ankle couldn´t fit in the ski boot with the bracelet, his attorneys said in court papers. As a result, they said he was required to hike up the mountain alone, which took two

The event was over in a fraction of a scintilla of a blink of an eye and released a burst of energy that´s not particularly impressive by most standards. But it´s being hailed as a milestone in a decades-long quest to harness the power of nuclear fusion, the same process that powers the sun. For the first time, scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California say they produced more energy from a reaction in their fuel source than they put into the fuel, said Omar Hurricane, the physicist who led the experiment. After extending the nation’s borrowing authority for the next year, the Senate voted Wednesday to restore the cost of living adjustment for military retirees’ benefits after it was cut as part of the Murray-Ryan budget deal in December. The Senate voted 95 to 3 to restore the benefits one day after the bill cleared the House. It now heads to President Obama for his signature. In December, the budget deal crafted by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., cut the cost of living adjustment for military pensions to one percent below the rate of inflation for veterans

House Speaker John Boehner last week pulled the plug on his immigration reform “principles” after his fellow Republicans refused to go along. One reason why the proposal received a cold reception was that the GOP’s self-appointed moral guardian Ann Coulter bandied surveys showing that immigrants will “wreck the country” with their Big Government-loving ways. “It´s not their [Republicans’] position on amnesty that immigrants don´t like,” she harrumphed. “It´s Republicans´ support for small government, gun rights, patriotism, the Constitution and capitalism.” But if Republicans love liberty and small government, they sure have a weird way of showing it. Matt Bevin, who is challenging Mitch McConnell in the Kentucky Republican primary, has made McConnell’s support in 2008 for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) a centerpiece of his insurgent campaign. It’s an understandable move on Bevin’s part. McConnell has a strong conservative voting record. Without the TARP vote, Bevin would be reduced mainly to generic complaints that McConnell is too “establishment.” But now it turns out that Bevin, an investment fund manager at the time, also supported TARP. In addition, he supported the Federal Reserve’s decision to begin buying commercial paper issued by banks. Politico, says it has obtained an October

It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Bush settled his mind by clearing brush in Texas, Reagan at his ranch in Santa Barbara. Obama unfortunately finds the brush already cleared in Martha´s Vineyard and Hawaii.)

Michelle Obama chose Venezuelan-American designer Carolina Herrera for the gown she wore Tuesday to the state dinner honoring French President Francois Hollande. President Obama has repeatedly suspended parts of the Affordable Care Act without the consent of Congress. The latest unilateral action happened Monday night, when the administration announced another delay of the employer mandate, the law´s provision that businesses with more than 50 employees must provide their employees with insurance starting in 2014 or pay large fines. In July, the president decreed the mandate wouldn´t be enforced at all in 2014, and last night administration officials declared that businesses with 50 to 99 employees wouldn´t be penalized in 2015. Republicans have denounced such actions as "lawless." But if what the president has

Less than 24 hours after President Obama illegally rewrote the law he had previously jammed down Boehner´s -- and the country´s -- throat, Boehner handed the budding dictator a clean debt-ceiling hike. Last October, Obama vindictively shut down the federal government upon his having refused to delay ObamaCare, which of course is exactly what he himself lawlessly did on February 10, 2014! Of course, Boehner is hardly in a position to argue now, having foolishly (immensely so) accepted responsibility for the shutdown. Never mind Boehner´s cowardice (we´ll get to that in a moment); what kind of moron cedes that kind of maneuverability to
