The big scare seems real enough, but only the terminally unobservant would not notice that the timing of it is awfully convenient for the White House and the fans of the security state. Who would put a leash on the National Security Agency now, with all the static, chatter and high anticipation about what mayhem might (or might not) come down on the Middle East? There’s no evident link between the chatter picked up by the NSA about the big scare, and the cellphone conversations of blue-haired Lutheran grannies in Minnesota, teenage prom queens chattering about their boyfriends

ST. PAUL, Minn.— Joan Mondale, who burnished a reputation as "Joan of Art" for her passionate advocacy for the arts while her husband was vice president and a U.S. ambassador, died Monday. She was 83. Walter Mondale, sons Ted and William and other family members were by her side when she died, the family said in a statement released by their church. The family had announced Sunday that she had gone into hospice care, but declined to discuss her illness. "Joan was greatly loved by many. We will miss her dearly," the former vice president said in a written statement.

A Houston furniture store owner is out an estimated $7 million due to the Seattle Seahawks´ win in the Super Bowl on Sunday after losing a bet with customers who made hefty purchases at his stores. Jim McIngvale, known as "Mattress Mack," ran a 10-day promotion at his two Gallery Furniture stores promising customers their money back if the Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos in the National Football League championship. To win, customers needed to have purchased $6,000 worth of furniture and had it delivered before kickoff on Sunday night. McIngvale said about 1,000 people participated, buying an average of

Call it the Jeanne Shaheen Protection Act of 2014: New Hampshire Democrats have introduced a bill into the state legislature that would help incumbents by allowing voters to cast a ballot for "none of the above." The Democratic lawmakers promoting the bill frame it as a populist measure. “Real choice means people have to be able to withhold their consent,” state Rep. Charles Weed, who sponsored the "None of the above" bill, told the local CBS outlet. Another Democratic proponent suggested politicians would kill the bill out of fear that "none of the above" would get the most votes. “It’s

“Do you know who my boss is?” A bodyguard for Gov. Chris Christie is facing criminal charges in Pennsylvania for shoplifting gun supplies — despite trying to evade punishment by dropping the name of his scandal-plagued boss. William Carvounis, a New Jersey state trooper assigned to Christie’s security detail, reportedly stole $268 in merchandise from a Hamburg, Pa., hunting gear store earlier this month, including handgun grips, a pistol magazine and a hat. But when the 35-year-old Carvounis was arrested by police, he repeatedly mentioned that he worked for Christie and asked for a break on the charges, police sources

While everyone was paying attention to the demise of the U.S. economy, the U.S. workforce, the checks and balances written into the U.S. Constitution, a terrible tragedy has ensued almost unnoticed. Yes, while the rest of were working to “save” the country from galloping Big Government, the most perfect game in the history of the universe has brought itself to the brink of extinction. The downfall of the National Football League is imminent. There are many signs and symptoms of the NFL’s impending doom there for the thinking person to see. White House spokesman Jay Carney Monday waved off concerns over the president’s prime-time public interference in the FBI investigation of the Internal Revenue Service. “Obviously we do not interfere with Justice Department investigations,” Carney said when he was asked about President Barack Obama’s statement just before the Super Bowl that there was “not even a smidgen of corruption” in his IRS’ decision to deny routine fundraising rights and legal protections to tea party political groups during the 2012 campaign. Besides, said Carney, Obama’s statement is reasonable. “What we have learned through the independent Inspector General and through the testimony that

President Barack Obama´s home state, which has been governed by Democrats throughout his national political career, has slipped in the rankings and now has the third-worst unemployment rate in the nation. Though the jobless rate was the same in December 2013 (8.6%) as in December 2012, the state´s labor force declined by a staggering 80,000 workers, according to Michael Lucci of the Illinois Policy Institute. Across the same period, the national unemployment rate fell by 1.3%--though that, too, was partly driven by an exodus of workers from the labor force, albeit less dramatic than in Illinois. Lucci observes: ´The state

BURBANK, Calif.— Jay Leno, as affably efficient backstage as he is in front of the camera, avoids waxing poetic about his 22-year ‘‘Tonight Show’’ run that draws to a close Thursday. Instead, he relies on numbers to tell the story. Leno’s tenure is second only to Johnny Carson’s 30 years; ‘‘Tonight’’ was No. 1 among viewers when he took it over and will be when he hands it off to Jimmy Fallon; he´ll have taped more shows than any predecessor, Carson included, with the final and 4,610th one. His dry assessment also may stem from a case of deja vu.

Harry Reid is set to meet privately with President Obama today. Many on the left expect them to discuss the Senate Majority Leader’s recent declaration of strong opposition to “fast track” trade promotion authority that will make it easier for the President to negotiate free trade deals currently being discussed with the European Union and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. “I’m against fast track,” Reid said, adding: “Everyone would be well advised just to not push this right now.” This is being widely seen as a sign the administration will have a tough time winning Congressional approval for the fast track bill,

O’Reilly grilled Obama on why Kathleen Sebelius had not been fired, noting that he as a taxpayer was paying her salary, and also asked if Obama thought the “If you like your plan you can keep your plan” claim was his “biggest mistake?” Obama responded to both queries by arguing that the implementation of the Affordable Care Act was an ongoing process, and he was committed to

At the time, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe blamed Congress for the loss, citing an “inflexible business model.” “We’ve achieved some excellent results for the year in terms of innovations, revenue gains, and cost reductions, but without major legislative changes we cannot overcome the limitations of our inflexible business model,” Donahoe said. “Congress is moving forward with legislation that has the potential to give us greater flexibility and put us back on a firm financial footing

We´ve had the Gaymmys; we´ve had Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson suspended for expressing unfavorable comments about anal intercourse; HBO has a new series, Looking about three gay men looking for love. It seems as though just about every television show, whether comedy or drama now has a gay character as a regular. It´s not surprising that homosexuality has become mainstream in our culture because nearly everyone has a relative or friend who is gay and we have been deeply influenced by those words of Harvey Fierstein who said, "I just want to be loved. Coca-Cola´s Super Bowl ad has sparked both outrage and kudos on Twitter and Facebook. The ad, entitled "America the Beautiful," features the patriotic song sung in eight languages. The ad shows people of different ethnicities. The ad also shows two dads rollerskating with their daughter. This was the first Super Bowl ad to feature a gay family, according to GLAAD, a lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender media advocacy organization. The inclusion of different languages sparked comments on Coca-Cola´s Facebook page calling the ad a disgrace and unpatriotic. "Speak English or go home," said one commenter on the page. As the commentary around the recent deaths of Nelson Mandela, Amiri Baraka and Pete Seeger made abundantly clear, most of what Americans think they know about capitalism and communism is arrant nonsense. This is not surprising, given our country’s history of Red Scares designed to impress that anti-capitalism is tantamount to treason. In 2014, though, we are too far removed from the Cold War-era threat of thermonuclear annihilation to continue without taking stock of the hype we’ve been made, despite Harry Allen’s famous injunction, to believe. So, here are seven bogus claims people make about communism and capitalism. 1. Only
